We offer Half Day and Overnight Bear and Wildlife Viewing Trips out to Katmai National Park from May through September. We have been guiding trips to Katmai for 26 years, and we have a perfect safety record with our experience with the bears. Hallo Bay Bear Camp is a fully sustainable wilderness camp designed to be a trend setting model of responsibility and low impact to this environment. Our guests observe the bears in their natural habitat where there are no viewing platforms or man-made trails. We limit our groups in size because it is our experience that small groups are much less impacting than large groups of people on any wilderness outing. The smaller group size intimidates wildlife less and leaves a much less impacting footprint on the habitat.

Amazing experience, engaged people, very, very basic infrastructure

Priceless experience, you get never closer to the beauty of nature. Bears. wolfe, eagles - all. Sunrise is breathtaking. People are great, Lance (guide) and Tim (pilot) stand out... read more

I have been fortunate to visit Alaska many times to view and photograph bears. Each trip has been different, but well worth the time and money. Unfortunately, Hallo Bay is the exception to my bear-viewing experiences. We had one good day of bear viewing--the weather was extremely warm and there was a scarcity of bears during my stay. Anyone who... More

Readers of reviews of the Hallo Bay Camp should only pay attention to reviews of the 2015 season. The owners of the lodge no longer control the property that the lodge operated from. There is no permanent lodge. Tom G's review is right on the money. I differ from his review in that management never let me and several other... More

Different length trips are offered by this company. For our first, we chose the one day adventure. Included was a one hour flight on a small (5 passenger) plane, a beach/ stream/ rocky walk to where bears had been spotted earlier. Our guide, Jerry, was knowledgeable and interesting, sharing a wealth of information while being safety minded. We saw 6... More

The only reason I am giving this excursion two stars is in appreciation of the absolutely fantastic job done by the camp crew who did their very best to see to the care, comfort, and enjoyment of their guests. Otherwise, given management’s utter disregard to the relationship between cost and quality, I would have been hard pressed to award a... More

Priceless experience, you get never closer to the beauty of nature. Bears. wolfe, eagles - all. Sunrise is breathtaking. People are great, Lance (guide) and Tim (pilot) stand out. Be aware - there is zero sanitary infrastructure. A shovel and a couple of bushes round the camp is as good as it get´s. Should not hold one back to go,... More

Don't think, just go! I highly recommend this company if you are thinking of going to Hallo Bay (Katmai NP) to see brown bears. Their communication during the booking, check-in and transfer process was very good and they have top-notch guides when you get there. I highly recommend doing an overnight package, if you can, for an even more intense... More

Such a wonderful life experience. One I will never forget. First, I must mention the current camp is much more primitive than the reviewer before me experienced. No bathrooms or electrical chargers. But what fun. I'm no photographer but I got some amazing pictures. Everyone had our safety foremost and I never felt threatened. Thank you Vivian, Lance, Jerry, and... More

I'm very late in writing this review ... almost a year ... but I'm planning another trip to Hallo Bay. This is definitely a place for your 'bucket list'. Hallo Bay is a permanent tented camp located on the Alaska Peninsula, at the edge of Katmai National Park. A friend and I had been looking for a place to photograph... More

The original camp sounded much more comfortable than the current "digs," but it's definitely a truer wilderness experience if you stay overnight. Our trip over was a bit scary due to weather, but our pilot from Germany was spectacular. And, there's no controlling weather! We walked miles in the cold wind and rain, and the bears did not disappoint. We... More
