It is excellent that they do an outstanding job getting you back and forth to Skagway because it may be the only way to reasonably get there. The crew was accommodating, and we saw a lot of magnificent scenery. They were very close to their scheduled times. If no one is in the booth, go to the dock to find a salesperson for a ticket.

Took the ferry as part of a bigger excursion package. The staff were so friendly and gave us a great explanation of the area while we traveled. Saw some lovely waterfalls and foliage too.

If your cruise ship does not stop in Skagway, the ferry is a great way to get there the fastest. The scenery along the route is beautiful and includes waterfalls and wildlife, especially eagles. Seating is both inside and outside on the upper deck. You can purchase your tickets in advance or at the docking area in Haines.

I took the ferry a couple of times last year and the ride was always good, the boat is plain but efficient. However the guides they have who are supposed to give you information about the area are completely full of crap. I listened carefully to everything the guy was saying, and then did some research afterwards. Many of the things he said about the waterfalls, the area, the populations of the towns, the history of the area, the depth of the channel etc. etc. were completely wrong. It was very evident that he was just making stuff up as he went along. If you do take the ride just put some headphones in. And if you want to learn about the area just get a book or look it up online.

We had booked a tour from Haines but our ship was docking in Skagway. We didn't know that we needed to take the ferry to Haines until the tour operator told us. We called the Ferry and just had to tell them what ship we would be on and they told us what Ferry we had to catch to make our tour and get back to the ship. They knew all the ship details. We had to make the 6:45 Ferry to Haines and were concerned about timing because our ship wasn't scheduled to dock until 6:30. The explained the Ferry would not be departing until the ship docked and passengers with reservations got on. For the return, the ferry we originally wanted was full but the next one would get us back to the ship in time so we booked that one. Then we got an email saying they rebooked us on the earlier one which was fine but since we never called back to confirm, they also called us to make sure we got the message. Turns out that the cruise tours for the RR trip uses this same Ferry so there were absolutely no problems making reservations for a different (non ship) tour ourselves which was a better and cheaper tour.
