About
The Takshanuk Mountain Trail puts you up close and personal with raw Alaskan wilderness. If you're looking for an activity that is a little more hands-on, hop into a Kawasaki Mule utility vehicle for a tour that climbs 1,500 feet through lush Alaskan forest. With a guide leading the way, you'll pass over meandering mountain streams and cruise past back country waterfalls, stopping along the way to enjoy crisp mountain air and snap lots of photos. You'll certainly want your camera handy when you reach the top of the trail because a magnificent overlook area provides a stunning view of Chilkoot Lake and the Upper Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord. To cap off the experience you'll be treated to fresh baked cookies and our famous beer-battered halibut and roasted chicken meal at our exclusive mountain lodge.

Excellent!

This was a really nice adventure. The food and drink was fantastic, we were collected from the dock with really clear communication.

On the trail, the vehicles were easy to manage despite the steep paths. There were fantastic views and hidden gems, waterfalls, a lovely lake, and spectacular views back over the valley.

We had 3 kids with us between 4 and 11 and all fitted in the back seat comfortably.

Cost-wise you get a lot more for your money than some other tours, and I felt like it was money well spent.

My family (ages from 6 to 71) took this tour in early June 2022 during our Royal Caribbean cruise to Alaska, and it was the consensus "best thing we did" during our entire trip.

The team at Takshanuk were great in making sure our tour fit within our excursion timeframe (5pm to 10pm) to Haines. They gave great instructions on where to meet on the dock once we exited our ship, and provided a shuttle to the 4x4 site. Once there, they provided quick training on how to operate the 4x4 vehicle (which none of us had ever done). They made it all super easy and fun.

Then we began our tour which was absolutely fantastic. There were a few stops along the way to visit the lodge for snacks and later dinner. We also stopped at a couple of overlooks with great views of the valley, mountains, and water. The best thing of all is that they let you drive the 4x4 at your pace, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and go as fast as you'd like to go. We made our trip a little more action packed going up and down the hills quickly and driving thru puddles, ect. It was just a great trip.

Again, can't say enough about this tour. Very well put together, organized. The views were fantastic. The cost was well worth it. And driving the 4x4s was a blast. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone traveling thru Haines!

People either write a review because it was really awful or it was really amazing. Spoiler Alert: our trip was AMAZING!!

Sabrina did a great job entertaining us on the drive from the Haines port to the trail head and gave us a lot of information about Haines and how it stands out from other ports.

The ride itself was gorgeous and lots of fun. We saw lots of foliage and crazy mushrooms along the trail - the scenic stops were beautiful and we had ample time to stop and take in the sites. We had a group of 10 that ranged in ages and included our 4 year old son. The tour guide passed out blankets and everybody seemed very comfortable.

Before finishing up our tour we stopped at the lodge for a delicious lunch. Multiple choices and all of the food was delicious! Then we were shuttled back to the Haines port to catch the ferry. Our guide was always aware of the time to make sure we wouldn't be late and made sure our group had time to take in the sites we wanted which included a few photo ops. This small group tour was far better than doing a big cruise line excursion. We can't recommend this trip enough!

Booked this tour directly and even though the boat docked late they were very responsive and flexible. Once docked we were driven about 10 minutes to the trail where we got our mules (atvs). We then drove up the mountain to their lodge where we got coffee and freshly baked cookies. The view from the lodge was spectacular. We then continued up the mountain and stopped at a couple more spots that were again amazingly beautiful. On the way down we stopped for lunch which was very good and then wound our way back down. The guides were excellent and the vehicles were in excellent condition. Overall had a great time.

We stopped in Haines on a cruise and booked this excursion through the providers website. The team picked us up at the cruise port exactly when they said they would. Communication was excellent right through. We were travelling with Family from ages 50 to 89 and everyone had a great time. Highly recommend this excursion. Kelleen and Maddie’s were great hosts. We were never rushed and had plenty of time to enjoy the views and learn about the area. The chicken and halibut lunch was sooo good. Just to give you a sense of how good these excursion providers are, somewhere on the mountain, I lost my sunglasses. Did not realize until back at the cruise ship. They looked everywhere for them including on the trail up the mountain. They contacted us with regular updates for over a week until…yes, they found them. They are mailing them to me…great customer service as it would be so easy for them to have written them off.

Our guide, Sarah, has a great sense of humor and was an excellent guide. The pictures and views that you see on this site are true.

The 4 x 4's are in excellent condition and the blankets, if you want or need one, are warm, toasty and just great!

On the trail you do stop along the way to enjoy the views. There is also a stop at the lodge for a snack before hitting the trail and a nice lunch once back at the lodge.

My grandson and his wife along with my husband and me highly recommend this mountain trail experience.

We came to Haines on a cruise ship and booked this tour directly with the company. Sarah met us at the ship and took us to the trail site.

When we docked in Skagway, we hopped on the ferry to Haines. We were met at the dock by our guide Sabrina. From that point on it was nothing but fun. On the way to the bottom of the mountain to pick up our mules, Sabrina was very informative about the area and people. When we got to the mountain we all hopped in our mules. After a safety briefing off we went. The scenery was beautiful along with some eagles in the trees, waterfalls that went under our trails wow. About half way up the trail we made o stop there for restroom break and snacks of fresh baked warm cookies, hot chocolate, hot tea or water. It was back in the mules and up we went. Just breathe taking stops and lots of information. On the way back down your sights changed as you saw the other side snow areas waterfalls yes beautiful. Then it was time for lunch. The meal is wonderful and delicious. It was so good I asked for a couple recipes. Our entire group loved it even the picky eaters. If you left hungry it was your fault. They have a little gift shop and of course had to get shirts and a few other things. On the way pack to the pier Sabrina toured the town with us to show us points of interest. When we returned to the dock, we met Barb who owns the mountain space and the excursion company. She was so wonderful to work with and very accommodating. We will definitely go on this excursion again on our next trip So if you want a fun time
, great meal, and a group that just makes sure you have a great time, make sure you call Barb and her employees will not disappoint. Thanks for a great time see you all on our next trip

This tour was awesome. Sabrina was the perfect guide and you could tell she was very passionate about what she does. Her daughter came along and I can already tell she's a tour guide in the making! Lol Lunch was awesome! The views were breathtaking!! If we ever make it back to Alaska we would do this again!

Best tour ever! There were four of us in our group and no one was disappointed with this excursion and we feel this was the best excursion any of us have been on! The entire staff enjoys their jobs and it comes across! The food provided for snacks and dinner was amazing! The tour guide was very informative! We highly recommend this adventure as the vistas are amazing and the staff really goes out of their way to make this a once in a life time experience!

We had a short evening port in Haines from our cruise and this is definitely the tour to do! We were picked up at the port, given a quick overview of the SxS, and off we went! Everyone drove their own machines and followed the guide. The scenery is amazing!! Our tour was at sunset which made it even more spectacular! We stopped at their mountain cabin for dinner of fresh halibut, salad and cookies, so good! This was a great experience for any age. One of the people on our tour requested a quick stop in Haines on the way back to the ship, our guide was so accommodating! She drove us through the town and told us about its history and stopped to let us take photos. Great customer service, Highly recommend!
