This is an amazing collection of materials from Tlingit history, including massive clan house pieces. Some of this material had been stolen from the clan, and has been recovered and beautifully curated with the help of the Smithsonian.

This visit was paired with a float down the Chilkoot River from the HAL Westerdam. The first stop after a bus ride from the dock was at This Heritage Center where a tour was offered by several younger members of the tribe and included a demonstration of wood carving and we could see fish being dried. We also saw a couple dances and were able to see historic sacred items from their history. They provided us with a personal listening device for our visit which helped hear everything they talked about without having to miss something because someone nearby was talking. This was really helpful.

We arrived with high expectations, but found out that if you are not in a big group, you are not necessarily going to get an expert guide. We complained, and then complained again when we found out the the lady escorting us basically knew less than us (they want to make sure you are not taking photos inside the museum). Finally we did get an interesting local guide. Remember it is only a museum and the visit out is done freely by you. Nevertheless, there are no other places like this in the area, and we think it was definitely worth a visit.

Travel an hour on a ferry in a beautiful scenic bay, then a 45 min shuttle bus ride to a remote Native Alaskan Village. Great opportunity to get out of the town and see real Alaskan natives and learn about their culture, not just cruise tourists and seasonal workers. The Center is not large, and staff is small. Not touristy or a Las Vegas type production. Its authentic and thus, not quite polished. Cost is a bit high for what you get. Presentation could be improved. Lunch is mediocre, a dry sandwich with wilted lettuce, a few sides like cookies, carrot sticks, etc. A small gift shop. Not enough time to walk around the museum area and read.

Thank you for your constructive feedback. We will work on those issues and have just taken on additional staff to help address them. Costs reflect the remoteness of our location in rural Alaska.

If you visit here, you will understand the pride of the Tlingit culture in this area. This is truly an informative experience and very much worth your while to encounter what this area has been like for centuries. So beautiful and inspiring.
