Our group of 8 adults hiked to the needle without a guide. It was more of an adventure than a hike to me! We really had to help each other navigate through the tangled vines and cross the slippery rocks at the creek. There were vines help pull yourself up the steep parts and the view at the Needle was... My daughter and I chose this hike as a bad weather day activity knowing it would be a challenge, and a challenge it was. We were confident enough with navigation to strike out without a guide, but if you are at all unsure, go guided. We started at Avarua and headed South, through the village, past gardens and pigs, and... More

If you are out of shape, don't even think about it! We went on this hike (started off during pouring rain) with a guide and so glad that we did -even though this was a popular trail, the path is not always clearly marked. We got up to the base of the needle and enjoyed the view a moment before... More

This is a trek not to be underestimated!! Just because you THINK you can do it.. BE PREPARED!! Its hard... its tough... especially in the pouring rain!! But with good smarts it can be done. You have to be in good physical shape, as you climb, crawl, stretch, slip, jump, etc. The path can be slippery and narrow... good shoes... More

They recommend taking this with a guide but its well marked. It is very steep and after any rain, you spend a lot of time on your hands and knees or pulling yourself up on ropes. Its a fantastic walk, and one of the must do activities on the rock. Just when you feel you've over indulged on food and... More

This hike is no joke. It will make you sweat, get you wet and wear you out. But the exercise and views and sense of accomplishment are well worth it. Be sure to stop by the little beachside hot dog stand at the Southern end of the trail to have a fresh coconut to quench your thirst.

My wife and I were looking for a good half-day activity and we decided on doing the needle hike. It was advertised as a "family friendly hike", which yes some parts were but not the entire hike. Some parts you are scaling slippery rocks and others you are jumping over the streams, which is good if you are on the... More

We did this trek as part of Pa's Treks with Bruce as our guide. Personally I wouldn't do this trek unguided, although a lot of people do. Even though we had read about it and were prepared, we were still quite surprised at just how hard some parts of the trek are. From pulling yourself up and using the tree... More

Excellent work, hard at times but worth every sweat 💦. Most amazing view on Rarotonga 🙌🏾 Take water, sunscreen and bug repellent. Easy to follow the tracks to the top and vines are strong to support your body when you need extra support. We loved it

We enjoyed our walk up to the needle- apart from getting a little lost. We had a scooter so we decided to start at the waterfall and walk up and then back so we could have a swim at the end. We did already know the markers go in the other direction so were looking behind us to check we... More
