It turns out Chema's Bodega is in the process of moving to a new location, so the place is not operating daily. Call ahead of time if you're planning a visit! Next time I'm back in San Jose, for sure I will do the workshop. Thanks for the cold beer, Chema!

outstanding visit
Oct 2015 • Friends
Among all the visits i've made to this venue i just can say that the pasion and the exellent service by his owner JoseMaria is just superb, the different beers from different breweries from CRC and also foreing ones makes this place a paradise for those who really enjoy the crafting and also to try some of the specilities this humble and nice fellow has to offer. Chema is an expert guy in this field so if you want to try something different you better listen to the recomendations he might give you!!!! Im a frequent visitor and all the times i go, Chema always surprising me with craft beers he make and other delicacies...
Is a really good place to get hops, yeast and all the equipment /supplies you need to make your own brews.... cheers, prost, salud!!!

Specialist!
May 2015 • Couples
Attended the class on may 10th (it goes from 1pm to 6pm) and right away you can tell that Chema is a pro, he knows his craft and can also teach, he makes it look so easy that one might think anyone can do it, i'm still thinking about brewing my own batch but haven't really decided yet. If you are not the DIY kinda person you can always enjoy the mouthful of craft beers that they have there and maybe even try some of the snacks they sell to go with beer, usually local and artisan products like beef jerky

Great Craft Brews
Stumbled across this cool little store and walked away with a growler of La Pelona IPA and several bottles of Costa Rican microbrews. The guys were very nice, spoke good English (better than my Spanish!), and let us sample the taps for free. I'll return soon to refill my growler and try their next find!

La Bodega de Chema is the perfect place to experience the process of making beer and learn about it with a clear explanation. You also can buy the equipment and ingredients to make your own beer at home or wherever you want. But if you are not interested in making beer but you love it, you can also buy national and international craft beer!
It's the perfect place for beer lovers!

I'm not sure how much of a tourist attraction this is, it's a small store offering up a mix of local and imported beers for purchase, or, for consuming on the spot. The big draw is probably more for locals or for visiting homebrewers - Chema is the only Cicerone certified brewmaster in Costa Rica, and he offers classes, tastings, and simple demonstrations. If you're lucky, as I was, you could be around for one of the once or twice a month get togethers of local homebrewers showing off their latest wares.

I really enjoyed the workshop and will definitely purchase supplies and equipment from Chema to make my own brew.

Chema is really good at explaining the process in a fun way, the workshop is hands on and entertaining, Chema and Varo were great about answering questions and making everyone feel like part of the process.

A "must do" if you like beer
Jan 2015 • Solo
Workshop is amazing, Chema not only has a vast knowledge of handcraft beer but also a great customer service and excellent way to pass his knowledge. You get the chance to taste different beers during the day; have hands on of the entire process. Also, they give you a booklet and a cool sticker as "graduation certificate".
The best part is the follow up, if you are really into brewing your own beer, Chema helps you with advise and they have all ingredients plus kits needed to get it done.

Though it is a small place, Chema's bodega is a worthwhile visit in San Jose. Growlers and bottles to go, local beers, beer ingredients and equipment, t-shirts and even classes for those who want to learn more.
