I went with an organized group, and we learned how to weave in a traditional style from a brilliant woman named Gulietta (spelling?). A memorable experience, and the store had a great variety of crafts from the various indigenous cultures of Costa Rica. It's a nonprofit that sends the money made from sales directly to the artisan, so you are helping to insure their livelihoods.

This place is a hidden gem for those looking for unique and authentic memories of Costa Rica. The shop is run by very kind people who have worked with indigenous communities for many years. Here you will find a variety of local and original crafts! each with its own history and tradition. I loved learning about the different indigenous cultures of the country and how each piece reflects the cultural richness of its region. Also, by shopping here, you are directly supporting artisans, as it is a Fair Trade store. Personally, I acquired a deer made of a material from a tree known as a very beautiful handmade mastate and also an ornament mask from the Brunca community.

This wonderful shop is owned by a very friendly couple who have worked with indigenous people for many years when they were working for an NGO in Costa Rica. They sell really beautiful and authentic indigenous objects from a group called Brunch. We bought the two objects, photos attached.

Thank you very much for your review on tripadvisor. In fact, the museum and shop are owned by an association of some 250 families of craftsmen and -women of the different indigenous communities of the country. The job on the spot is done by volunteers, some retired, others students of the university completing their obligatory commmunity work. There are 8 indigenous groups in the country, one of them is the Brunca community, well known for their masks and textiles. Thank you again for your comments.

A shop and tiny museum where you can learn about and purchase items from a variety of indigenous groups from around Costa Rica. It is staffed by volunteers and university students who are friendly and helpful and happy to talk about this non-profit. The prices are reasonable and shopping here is a great way to support indigenous artisans and their communities. The quality of the crafts is good, not as high as at Galeria Namu, but the prices are much lower. A fun place to visit even if you don't purchase anything.

I was very interested in buying a Boruca mask while in Costa Rica, but was very concerned about getting a fake or paying way too much. One of our guide books mentioned this small nonprofit "fair trade" shop that acts as a place for Costa Rica's indigenous tribes to sell their art work without middle-men - all the proceeds go back to the artists.

Our taxi driver had never heard of it, but found it with no problem. He told us that it was not in a normal "tourist" area, so was surprised to see it there. They have a small museum discussing the various tribes of Costa Rica, and a wonderful shop with art work from all over the country. The shop was wonderful! It had some wonderful masks, and lots of other things (we bought a lot). The mask I eventually purchased would have cost triple at some of the other places we had shopped. If you're in San Jose, and you want some indigenous art, you owe it to yourself to check this place out (here's their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ChietonMorenOficial).

We visited Chieton Moren looking for real handmade items instead of the mass produced stuff that dominates the "Artisanal" market down the block. Chieton Moren did not disappoint. A wonderful variety of items and prices. Unique things you won't find elsewhere. I was hoping for more paintings but everything else was wonderful. Don't miss this place!

This artesania store is run as a non-profit entity, allowing the money earned from sales to go directly to the artisans. You will find an outstanding selection of indigenous-made arts and crafts from all over Costa Rica, with the added bonus of displays explaining the history, location, and ethnography of each group. For beautifully-crafted items, this is the place to shop. It's even more gratifying to know that your money benefits the artisans, their families and their communities. It's a win-win-win all the way around!

Pilar

A tiny fair trade shop featuring the crafts of the 8 original peoples of Costa Rica. Run by volunteers. Very fairly priced. Saw nearly identical items in a shop touting high end indigenous works for more than double the prices we found here. Charming tour of a tiny museum, only available in Spanish the day we went, but the written explanations were translated to English.
