We had a three week stay in Costa Rica but only chose to use Costa Rica Expeditions (CRE) for 5 of those days. All aspects of the CRE tours from the drivers, guides and communications were excellent. Drivers and guides were always prompt, very friendly and knowledgeable. Part of our limiting the use of CRE was the cost. One can certainly see things cheaper doing it on your own but our itinerary had us staying only two days at remote locations requiring some driving to get to the next destination. I elected to go with CRE so all logistics were coordinated as I didn’t want to drive as car rentals are rather pricy once you factor in the insurance and fuel costs. To our delight the 5 days were nearly perfect and would certainly consider using CRE again for our next trip. As other reviews have pointed out you get what you pay for and the cost was worth it.
The only exception to our tour was the day trip in Uvita to Ballena National Park. The driver was not there at the appointed time so I called CRE Operations. The support team was very sympathetic and immediately was on the task at hand. The driver arrived after a few minutes and several follow up calls from Operations to verify all was well. The transportation taken care of, we arrived at the kayaking and snorkeling office which seemed a bit surprised at our arrival. There appeared to be a slight scramble to get us going and started on our tour. The guide was friendly and tried his best to keep the atmosphere lively but it all seemed a bit like he was winging it. After the river kayaking we were asked if we wanted to go snorkeling out at the ‘whale’s tail’ reef. We were all game and paddled out nearly 2km in the sea to get out there. Upon arriving, our guide stated the water was too murky to snorkel and we immediately paddled back to shore. Afterwards, we realized the guide did not have snorkel gear for the three of us in his kayak and the entire paddle trip was more of an exercise. The driver and tour were subcontracted out by CRE so in future bookings it would be good to verify what parts are CRE and what parts are subcontracted out. There was a noticeable difference in lowered quality for the subcontracted portions.

We are sorry to hear that your day trip from Uvita to Bahia Ballena National Park had some inconveniences and that the kayaking and snorkeling tour presented some communication issues with our company. It is very important for us to improve this sort of situations and communicate as soon as possible with the subcontracted vendors to prevent that this doesn't happen in the future. We booked a 3 week custom tour with CRE, staying in six locations with all local air and land transfers, reservations, guides, itinerary and logistical planning done by CRE. We found them to be an honest and conscientious company that delivered value on the price charged. Some minor glitches were corrected quickly to our satisfaction. Accommodations of standard expected.

At the 11th hour we had to cancel a trip to South East Asia because of the coronavirus. With only six days notice we contacted Costa Rica Expeditions in hopes of putting together a reasonable last minute trip to Costa Rica. What they delivered far exceeded any expectations we had. The travel planners were extremely patient and understanding of our situation and worked tirelessly to create an itinerary that we would be happy with. During the planning phase, their communications were frequent and constructive. They were very flexible and making adjustments to the itinerary to better suit our needs. We simply told them which areas we wanted to visit and what class of hotel we hoped to stay in and they did the rest. When they put our itinerary together, they scheduled just one activity per day. I wanted to be more adventurous and they kindly added additional activities at my request. I should have listened to their suggestion. They had scheduled a vacation with an ideal balance of activity and relaxation. By not taking their advice, we almost had too much nature and not enough downtime. Upon arrival in Costa Rica, we were properly greeted at the airport and transported to our hotel. We spent two days in Arenal at the Springs Resort, two days in Moneverde at the Monteverde Lodge ( a property owned by Costa Rica Expeditions) and three days at the Hotel Parador in Manuel Antonio. The first and third hotels were luxury properties and provided beautiful upscale accommodations. The Monteverde lodge was comfortable and blended perfectly in it's cloud forest environment. We received emails every evening from Costa Rica Expeditions reminding us what our itinerary was for the following day along with where and when to meet them. Every single person that we interacted with through Costa Rica expeditions was extremely informative and knowledgeable. They genuinely love what they do and it shows. Pick ups and drop offs were always prompt and the itinerary was always exactly as described. Their suggestions for appropriate gear such as clothing, bug spray, sunscreen, etc. were always informative and appreciated. The nature guides were incredible. Their depth of knowledge on all wildlife subjects and their ability to spot interesting flora and fauna was unbelievable. Costa Rica Expeditions is a well organized, personable group that offers excellent customized tours at a value based price.

We certainly understand that Coronavirus is a very well known topic right now around the world and everyone is taking action in order to prevent any negative situation. As we have mention in our web page, Costa Rica is currently free of any reported cases of this type of Virus and is safe to travel around.

We had excitedly booked a vacation at their Tortuguero Lodge in late March but had to return home after being notified the Resort had closed due to COVID19. Our prepaid full amount was returned through a Third Party Booking Representative. However, an amount for prepaid activities and a return shuttle which we made directly with Costa Rica Expeditions has not been returned despite the written assurance that it would be, now months ago. Several excuses where given and then silence. Emails have gone unanswered, messages left, go unanswered and a FaceBook inquiry I made was taken down. Now the lines into the SanJose office do not get answered and voice mail is full. It is utterly hopeless. Is it too much to ask that their customer service people attempt to deal with this issue in a professional manner and explain what is going on?

For our first visit to a Latin American country, we chose Costa Rica Expeditions to assist us in planning our itinerary and the logistics of carrying it out. We had a wonderful worry-free holiday featuring many highlights of this beautiful country in three different areas- Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio Park.. We focused on nature and wildlife and our guides on the various tours were exceptional. Often we had our own guide and we saw many things that would have gone unnoticed had we been on our own. The drivers and guides were always on time and the daily communication by email kept us informed of the upcoming activity schedule. The lodging choices were wonderful and we always felt safe and comfortable. We hope to return to Costa Rica again and will use Costa Rica Expeditions again if we do so.

My favorite part by far was rafting the Pacuare. The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly and it was beautiful. The only place we saw any animals was at the Mistico hanging bridges out guide there was excellent. Our lodge at Monteverde was a let down so isolated and the food not good and expensive the weather didn't help by pouring the whole time and I would recommend anyone going to Monteverde do a night tour because we saw no animals during the day except at the hummingbird house which was awesome. The cost to enter the park with a guide was high.

We booked our three week independent travel trip to Costa Rica with Costa Rica Expeditions (CRE) and highly recommend their services! We developed our itinerary and they handled the details. They arranged the transfers, hotel reservations, internal flights, car rental, some tours (both private and group), etc. Everything went off without a hitch. They ensured we received appropriate communication, both directly via email and through the hotels for every event/transition/activity and they were immediately responsive to any question or inquiry that we had during the trip.
We stayed at the Tortuga Lodge (owned by CRE) and found the accommodations exceptional and the staff friendly and very helpful. The staff, from the reception crew to restaurant servers to the guides and boatmen communicated a desire to give the guests an wonderful experience. A special shout-out to Julian, the manager, Enrique and Maria in the restaurant, Javier for the trip to Tortuguero, Noel for the night and early morning walks, and Angelo and David for an amazing boat tour. These are only to name a few, yet all deserve a special Thank You!
Although it seems a small thing, one example of the staff's desire to give guests a good experience is our seeing a Tiger Rat Snake. While sitting by the pool, a staff person (one of the cleaning staff) approached us and asked if we would like to see a snake. We excitedly said, "Yes!" and followed her. There was a 6' snake wrapped in a bush. We watched it and later were able observe a grackle peck/attack the snake. We would have missed the experience had the staff not made the special effort to invite the attention of the guests.
Our primary contact in the CRE office was Yorleny. She was knowledgeable, pleasant, and responsive. Working with CRE was a great experience!

We couldn’t have been happier with our trip.
As a result of Costa Rica Expedition's planning and attention to detail, every single arrangement went exactly to plan. We were really impressed with the itinerary that our travel advisor put together - it met our specific family needs. The emails we received with the outline and confirmation were highly detailed and very useful.
Once in Costa Rica, the emails to let us know the pick-up times and plans for the next day’s tours, as well as delivery of the details to us at the hotels, were very efficient. We also appreciated the drivers having children’s car seats.. Fantastic attention to detail! All of our guides and drivers were on time, the vehicles were immaculate and we were always given interesting information about Costa Rica’s flora and fauna. We learned so much! The selection of hotels was spot on! They were all great - very comfortable, lots of things for families to do and they offered great food onsite.
The tour guides were all highly professional, very knowledgeable and we felt safe 100% of the time.

Costa Rica Expeditions did a fantastic job helping us decide which areas of the country to visit. Our travel advisor really listened to our interests and preferences and booked a perfectly custom tailored itinerary. It was our first visit to Costa Rica, and we were so impressed by the friendly people, natural beauty, sense of sustainability/ecology, and safe, clean towns throughout our journey. We were glad they booked us on domestic flights from San Jose to Tortuguero and then on to La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano area -- saved lots of time on the roads. Very highly recommend!

Using Costa Rica Expeditions was the best thing we did in planning a trip for our anniversary. Though I'm used to making arrangements for our travels, there were too many things to do and see and options for them all. Chose C R Expeditions for their experience and it paid off. Starting with a lengthy questionnaire, there were back and forth emails and several revisions of itinerary by our patient agent before we were all satisfied. Then there was a seemingly endless library of information about traveling in that area. Questions were answered promptly. On arrival we were greeted at the airport and felt we had a guardian angel watching for the two weeks. Every accommodation met or exceeded our expectations and each of the tours and activities had obviously been vetted. Our guides and drivers were friendly, helpful and experienced. And it seemed everyone in Costa Rica knew it was our anniversary! We will be returning to this beautiful, friendly country and using Costa Rica Expeditions. We'll be thinking of and wishing the best to all in this lovely country during the travel shut down.

Our emails have not gone through and our phone voicemails have received no response. We are so disappointed since we had taken a lovely trip with Costa Rica Expeditions a number of years ago. hola volamos a Costa rica el 21 de febrero y llegamos a san jose, el 22 queremos ir al arenal y quedarnos en un hotel en tabacon . Después queremos ir a Monteverde los días 24 y 25 y hacer un recorrido y de allí ir a Manuel Antonio y el 27 irnos a Guanacaste y estar dos días hasta el 29 y el día 29 ir a san jose y quedarnos una noche allí. Nos interesan hoteles cuatro estrellas y los tours, nos pueden ayudar con una cotización somos tres personas y tenemos dos opciones: Una habitación triple o bien dos habitaciones, la que se ajuste mas a nuestro presupuesto.

Costa Rica Expeditions will work with your limitations and tailor hikes and other activities. We had some days of casual walking but up and down slippery (wet) hilly unpaved cc trails.

Space over the Christmas holiday is tight. If you want to plan an itinerary, my suggestion would be that you contact us directly so we can see whether or not the space is available for the exact dates you plan travel and what the pricing would be taking availability into consideration.
My suggestion is that you go to our website, fill out your Wish List form and when it asks you if you would like to schedule a call say yes. One of our Travel Planners will begin working with you and figure out if we can still put something together for you.

You mention that they are good for families with young children. My husband and I are planning a trip with our young child. I am concerned about the amount and level of hiking. Do you have any advice or tips on what a family with a young child can expect and what we should be prepared for/with?

What people have said so far is exactly right. When you contact us, let us know how old your child is and what you think would be appropriate for hikes. Depending on your child's age we would be happy to make recommendations that would work for your family.
You don't have to conform to an existing itinerary, we will custom design your vacation so that it fits your needs.
The most important thing you can do is to fill out our Wish List Form online and be sure to write comments in the comment boxes telling us about your situation and what you think would work and what might not work.

We realize that deciding which price range is ideal for you can be confusing. We've worked A LOT at simplifying it, but we still have a long way to go!
If it would be helpful, I'd be happy to give you a call next week and explain the trade offs.
Thing that are good to think about are, where do you want to allocate your budget? Lodging? Activities? Both?
What kind of transportation do you want? Would you like to be able to set your departure times and have the flexibility to stop anywhere you want for as long as you want?
Or would you rather save on transportation and take transfers that have pre determined departure times and make only quick stops for restrooms?
Would you be enjoy practicing your Spanish with a Spanish speaking driver? Or would you rather have an English speaking guide with you while you travel from place to place, giving you the opportunity to ask more questions and provide insight.
These are just a few examples of the kinds of things that I would help you explore.

Hello-
Costa Rica is so small that you can do a great 2 night/ 3 day tour (everything there is worth at least that...) in any number of environments.
Our first stop was in Tortuguero (a Tropical Rain Forest on the Caribbean Coast that is accessible only by a 30 minute plane ride, and a 10 minute ferry across the river...)...and it was fabulous!
This resort is nestled into the jungle there, and while just walking from our room to the main dining room, we saw Howler Monkeys, 3 toed Sloths, Iguanas, Montezuma Birds, Jesus Christ Lizards (because they can run across water...) and countless birds, insects, arachnids, etc...
I recently reviewed a "pleasantly manicured resort" (which I meant to be mildly critical...) because it was exactly the opposite of this wonderfully natural place.
This one is called the Tortuga Lodge...enjoy:)

We would be happy to put plan a couple of day tours where you are able to get the answers to the questions you have about retiring in Costa Rica and then see the rainforest.
My suggestion is that you write me directly and send me details such as, what airport you are arriving at, if you have made reservations, where and the specific questions that you would like to have answered with regard to retiring in Costa Rica.
With that information, we would have what we need to send you an initial proposal.
March 3rd is right around the corner, so the sooner the better!

Hi, I booked a number of things through Costa Rica Expeditions, and I do not have the price broken down by each tour. I suggest you contact CRE and get their recommendations. You can do private or group tours, depending on your budget.
