    Brilliant tour and delicious food
The lunch at the adjoint cafe was delicious. I went into the theatre as part of a guided tour (available in English and Spanish) and it was brilliantly done. The staff dressed up as characters to recount the history of the place and kept us entertained the whole time.

Definitely do the guided tour if you have 40 minutes - 1 hour to spend
If you have time, I definitely recommend doing the 40 minutes guided tour. The two actors get really into character, especially the actress who plays multiple roles. Plus they are knowledgeable and answered a lot of questions about the theatre. They talk about the theatre room, upstairs, the paintings, sculptures and historical people connected to the theatre. I also recommend booking the tour in advance, but you pay on the day of your visit. I booked the 11am tour in advance. When paying and collecting my ticket, there was a couple behind me who also wanted to do the 11am tour but it was fully booked and the next available slot was the 1pm tour. You can email uboleteria@teatronacional.go.cr to book. The price was CRC 3,500 per person.

Fascinating quick tour of Costa Rican history
You must see this museum when in Costa Rica. It is located in an old fortress, where you can see old prisoner cells, the lookout towers, and other parts of the fort. You enter through a lovely butterfly garden and the history of the country unfolds as you walk through the exhibitions that have transformed the fort. There are exhibits from and about indigenous peoples and all stages of the country's history. Very well presented, with fabulous artifacts and through and engaging presentations. I learned so much about the country, its art, its politics, its ecomony, and the current plans of its people. Do not miss this.

    Charming
I didn't expect to enjoy my visit so much. Excellent guided tour with "charming" visits for characters from Costa Rica's past. Amazing floor that is raised every four years for new president's gala. Treasure of art work. Cafe is a little pricy but very comfortable setting. Safe walking area. 10 minutes from Holiday Inn.

Stunning theatre, excellent tour, lovely theatre cafe
The glowing reviews are absolutely right: this place is a gem and the hour-long tour is both informative and fun. Hard to believe the amount of gold leaf! - and it’s great to be able to see much of the restoration taking place. The video about the auditorium floor, which can all be raised and lowered, is just one remarkable element. Listen out for the explanation for the separate entrance for those with tickets for the third circle top…! Highly recommended (& don’t miss the chance to have an excellent coffee & some equally excellent food in the wonderful theatre cafe next door - a timeless gem).

Number 1 attraction in San Jose.
An absolutely beautiful little gem of a theatre. Worth the guided tour despite it being limited- you don't go on the stage or behind it. The guides are knowledgeable & fun. The coffee shop attached is good if pricey.

    Worth a visit
There are only two tours per day in English and both are in the afternoon which is a shame. We went on the Spanish tour as this was the only way we would get to see inside the building. It is very beautiful and worth the visit. The guides were very enthusiastic. Shame we could not understand.

Nice English tour. Tips for getting ticket in my review.
Beautiful building. Nice bits of history. Tasty cafe. Interesting part of town. **HINT! For English speaking tours you need to go to the box office outside of the theater on the right side. (This is not very obvious). There was only one English tour on the day of my tour, at 3:00pm. The other 8 or so tours were all in Spanish and several were sold out. It cost around $8 per person.

We agree with all the reviewers who recommend the tour. It is given by two actors from the theater company, playing roles from the building's history. Rather than coming across as cheesy, it was an entertaining way to explain the interesting history and features of the building. The building is beautiful, very ornate. We were particularly struck by the floor that, after the chairs are removed, can be raised from below to bring it level to the stage. The story of the mural Alegoría al Café y al Banano was also particularly interesting.

The ticket office, on the outside of the theater to the left, was closed over lunch hour. There was a small line to get tickets when it opened just in time for the 1:00 tour.

We’ve been on many theater tours around the world and this one was the best! They had actors tell you the history of the building in a very entertaining way. The tour lasted 55 minutes. The tours are scheduled hourly in English and Spanish depending on the hour. You buy tickets at the ticket booth on the outside of the building to the left.

On our last day in San Jose we happened to pop in the lobby of the Teatro National to avoid the rain. We ended up going on a short tour of the theater. It was a great way to enjoy a piece of Costa Rican history. The place itself is absolutely beautiful inside and the tour guides in period costume add to the charm. Beautiful artwork and a chance to brush up on interesting facts, such as being in the place where every four years the outgoing Costa Rican president hands over the power to the incoming newly elected president, make this a worthwhile destination when in San Jose.

This beautiful and historic place is really worth visiting. I recommend taking the complete tour of the theater and listening to the guide tell the story of the theater while you walk through the beautiful rooms and access the seating area and the stage. Everything very impressive. There is a cafe inside with very good offers of food and drinks. You can access the theater cafe without having to do the full tour, although I really recommend doing the full tour.

So, we were disappointed in that we didn't get to see the inside. The Teatro has changed it's policies and you can no longer just walk up and buy tickets. They are now assigning tickets by time slots. We were on part of a larger city tour of San Jose and since we didn't have the time to wait around till the next opening, we had to forego our visit, despite the fact it wasn't that crowded.

We wanted to see the National Theater. We checked at our hotel and they said that because of COVID, there were no performances but, for a small fee, you could go in and see it. We went to the theater, engaged the two men who were at the front. One said we could only go in if we took the tour. When we asked when it was he replied at one oclock and one hour, It was 12:30 so we waited the thirty minutes before the ticket office opened. Once it did, the ticket lady said the tour was at three and only in Spanish. We didn’t go. We would have been happy to pay a fee just to walk in and see the theater. It is impressive on the outside.

You could argue that the charms of SanJosé city are difficult to discern. The allure of this town is certainly less obvious than other capital cities. The Nat Theatre however is a real gem in the rough. A testament to the coffee barons new riches of the late nineteenth century it has been co opted by the nation as a symbol of statehood.

The style is a inspired mash up of neo Palladian, baroque and most noticeably French neo-classical. The interior is opulent - due to imported Italian marbles, art work and statues. Allegorical frescoes are impressive. The principal one shows coffee pickers and agricultural workers. The coffee workers look suspiciously like well fed, happy peasants from northern Italy.

We took the 45 minute guided tour in English that was both fun and informative; the two guides had a great double-act going and answered the many questions well.

Not only is it worthwhile to visit this theatre just to see its architectural beauty, our tour guides provided truly the most enjoyable tour experience I've ever had. The guides are 2 actors who played roles permitting them to talk about the theatre's building and use , conveying information is a super-fun way. It was simply delightful. Forty-five minute tours are held in English or Spanish.

The theatre is an interesting building and the guided tour is worth it if you have a spare hour or so in San Jose. It is presented in an unusual manner by two actors - great fun. There is also an atmospheric cafe on the premises - a perfect setting to discuss arts and politics over coffee and cake.
