My 19-year-old son and I had a great tour with Mike of Paradise Tours. He picked us up at our hotel and we drove to Doka coffee plantation,. We took a quick look around (got to see the famous rainbow eucalyptus tree!) but didn't stay long, as we explained to Mike that we had a coffee tour planned for another day. From Doka, we drove to Poas. Mike gave me a website for a webcam on the crater so I could see if the view was obstructed by clouds at that time. When it appeared to be clear enough to warrant a visit, Mike stopped and purchased tickets ahead using the wifi of a shop he was familiar with. I thought this was brilliant and a great perk to hiring him, as advance tickets are required (and there's little to no cell services in the area), but the crater is frequently obscured and tickets are not refundable. Our view of Poas was incredible and Mike was really informative, pointing out different minerals, sulphur clouds, etc. He also knew all of the vegetation on the walk up to the crater, so we learned far more than we would have by ourselves. After leaving Poas, we drove to la Paz waterfall, where we stopped and admired its power and beauty, before heading to a "soda"- a local restaurant overlooking the San Fernando waterfall. The back deck area is visited by numerous hummingbirds and we had plenty of time to enjoy and photograph them. Lunch was great and it was impressive that the entire restaurant was being run by two women working on woodturning stoves. This meal was probably the most authentic we had our entire time in Costa Rica and we really enjoyed it. After lunch we drove to the boat tour. On the tour, Mike and our guide pointed out numerous birds, caiman, iguanas, and even a sloth and a monkey. Mike brought binoculars for us to use, as well as cold drinks and fresh fruit, which we really appreciated. Our favorite part of the tour, despite the amazing sites we got to see, was Mike himself. He has an engineering background and an appreciation for science, so the entire day was filled with learning opportunities for us. He was incredibly flexible and willing to make the tour suit our needs, even during the actual tour. That makes for an optimal tour experience and one you probably wouldn't get with a larger tour company. He also seems to know everyone along the route, meaning that people on his tour get unique opportunities they night not get on their own. Mike genuinely cares about people and animals, too. It was a pleasure to spend the day with him and we still consider that the highlight of our entire trip to Costa Rica.

Paradise Tours couldn't be a more apt name. From the moment our tour began, my family and I felt like VIPs. As we were whisked away on our unexpectedly private tour, Mike began to tell us about our surroundings in San José. This trend continued for almost our entire time with him. He was both entertaining, informative and quite personable. We quickly made our way to Alajuela via the Pan-American Highway. Our tour guide, Mike, showered us with information that ranged from historical in nature down to the scientific names of local flora. We began our real journey when we stopped at a coffee plantation. During this brief sojourn, we enjoyed a quick espresso followed by an abbreviated lesson into the coffee production process. We even had the opportunity to sample the fruit of the coffee cherry, which was unexpectedly mild yet sweet, without a single hint of coffee flavor. We washed up, hopped back in the SUV and headed up the mountain to the Poas Volcano Crater. After a brief delay getting into the park, we joined a group about to embark up to the crater. We briskly walked to the front of the sauntering pack. The uninterrupted view was spellbinding. The sulfur clouds billowed from the crater, leaving a yellow tinge to the gathering liquid accumulating around the vents. We got there just in time. Only minutes later did the clouds set in. And, so, it was time to head to our next destination. As we left the area, we made a couple quick stops for some more breathtaking views. We also stopped at a fruit and snack stand, where we picked up some beautiful strawberries and local candies. Then, we cruised down the mountain to our next destination. The La Paz Waterfall was simply beautiful. Mike even entertained us with an optical phenomenon that occurs when you watch the waterfall in a particular fashion. It was a fun bonus for the kiddos. While there, we sampled some cheese arepas, then hit the road without delay. Our next stop was a country restaurant that overlooked the San Fernando Falls. Overlooking the rainforest below, we were entertained by toucanets, barbets and hummingbirds, among others flocking in to eat the fruit and nectar left out for them. When lunch was ready, we retired indoors to a warmer dining area where we enjoyed local cuisine slow cooked over a wood-burning stove. The food was fresh and quite lovely. We ordered the fish, two kinds of beef, as well as the pork, which we all shared in order to sample everything. After our leisurely meal came to a close, we climbed back into the SUV to make our way to the Sarapiquí River. We stopped for a quick round of coffee and dessert, then made our way to the boat launch. Our exceptionally private riverboat cruise down and back up the river yielded great sights. We saw numerous howler monkeys, a couple two-toed sloths, a great iguana, a variety of birds—but, I think the overwhelming favorite was when we encountered a large grouping of lesser long-nosed bats. They were so small and adorable. We were captivated. I must have been photographing them from no more than a foot away. We stayed until they flew away, which just added to the whole experience. After we made it out of the long and winding road through the rainforest, the sun began to set. It was a glorious day.

We had the privilege to spend three great days with Mike seeing several fantastic locations around Costa Rica. I’ll start off with saying, I travel with adults with developmental disabilities which can be challenging while partaking in activities. Mike was utterly supportive and interacted with each member in our group making sure each one had the trip of a life time. Never a condescending word and always willing to help when he could. Our first day we headed to the Posa Volcano Crater. Mike had warned us ahead of time due to the weather we might not be able to see much but we would try. Lucky for us the clouds did part and we were treated to a spectacular view. As we were leaving the clouds moved back in and completely blanketed the crater. I trusted mike to select a time he thought would be the best and he really came through. We stopped at a local restaurant for breakfast which had amazing food and just as good of a view overlooking the rolling hills. Our next was the Canopy Zip-line. The staff there were incredibly professional, and our entire group had a blast. 10-12 different ziplines through the treetops was an experience no one in our group will ever forget. The last activity for the day was out tour of the Doka Coffee plantation. I really had no idea what goes into growing and producing coffee and truly learned a lot. The tour guide was very informative, but Mike was able to elaborate and go into much more detail as to what we were seeing. We ended the day with a late lunch with rotisserie chicken cooked over coffee wood. The meal was cooked to perfection. The second day we traveled to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We all enjoyed the numerous animals including sloths, jungle cats, monkeys, frogs and butterfly’s before getting a buffet lunch and walking down to the waterfalls. Again Mike was at his best describing the history of the area and pointing out things in our surroundings we otherwise would have missed. He offered to take numerous group photos which turned out great. Our last day with Mike we traveled to the town of Grecia with the steel Church. He told us about the history of the church and what it took to get it built in the first place. The interior of the church is beautiful as well as the surrounding grounds. After the church we headed to a 100-year-old Oxcart factory. Very interesting to learn how they were made that long ago and yet are still produced the same way today. Lunch was again great as we went to a little restaurant that was hidden away down a long a narrow road. We would have never known about it if it were not for Mike. He made sure everyone in the group ordered what they wanted and were taken care of. The last part of the day consisted of shopping. We went to many different shops, each offering their own unique souvenirs. Mike was very knowledgeable about what was a good deal and what was overpriced. He made sure no one in our group was taken advantage of. Overall the three days with Mike were wonderful. From picking us up from the hotel to dropping us off safely at the end of the day. My only complaint is that I did not get a group picture with him in it, which was my fault because it didn’t hit me I failed to get one until it was to late. If you want to experience Costa Rica in a safe, fun and informative manner you can’t go wrong with Paradise Tours and Mike as a guide.
