I felt overwhelmed by the loud “noises” coming from the various stores along the way. Though I enjoy the music they play, their constant calling of customers with their loud microphones was quite irritating. Besides, I am on vacation and not on a shopping trip, so no shopping for me here!

Lots of shops, restaurants, vendors, local culture and history. Nice paved walking area with many things to see and do. Was a cool day and not too crowded so it was a very nice experience. Felt like I was in a safe environment and enjoyed mixing with the locals who were very accommodating when I seemed lost. I am 66 but really enjoyed the long walk. Parking was very difficult so we took a cab from hotel.

The Pedestrian Mall in San Jose is part of Avenida Central (from around 6th street to 9 street with lots of stores and restaurants. I love it because it is the nice commercial section of the town and free of motor vehicles. Good place for eating, seeing and buying. At the end of the mall you can visit Central Park, National Theater and Catedral Metro.

If what you’re looking for is to be dropped center in downtown have San Jose this is the place for you. It goes on for blocks and blocks and in different directions it appears that there are five walk streets and all one contains the central market. The streets that I watch did not have many restaurants but tons and tons of shopping for anything that you could imagine The street said I want did not have many restaurants but tons and tons of shopping for anything that you could imagine . The streets were filled with local looking for bargains . I negoiated taxi both ways. Ask them how much they will charge you and just give them cash .

Near Central Park and La Merced Church, sections of Avenida Central (Central Avenue) have been converted to a pedestrian mall, vehicular traffic barred. Along this stretch are many churches, parks, restaurants, and other points of interest. It’s an excellent self-guided walking tour and photo op. At one spot, our tour group posed at a “cow” (depicted in the accompanying photo) made of composite material and painted by local artist. This “vaca” will be auctioned to raise funds for various charities. When walking along this pedestrian mall, I found several works of art, including the bronze “Fat Lady” (Gordita), also depicted in an accompanying photo.

Why not enjoy about 20 of the top TripAdvisor rated attractions/sites when walking along this pedestrian mall? It’s free, educational, and exposes travelers to the people and culture of Costa Rica not seen in modern hotels and buildings.

I like places that have a lively vibe about them. This open arcade has more recognised brands closer to the National Theatre end with local businesses gathered around the Central Market end. For sure go into the Mercado Central - it’s a joy in Itself.

There are actually 5 pedestrian only streets in San Jose. They are interlocked together, so you can walk them all. Avenida Central is the most tourist friendly of the streets. What i think is so interesting how different they each feel from each other.

If you have time, walk more than one and get a feel for what life is like here.

If you are looking for stores to find a bargain, this is the place, but it is very crowded and not the safest place. Be sure to not wear jewelry any where downtown, and be sure your purses are zipped up and over your shoulder secured, wallets hidden and secured as there are a lot of pick pockets and crime here.

To be honest, downtown San Jose is not worth the trip. Its not very scenic and there is a lot of traffic to deal with.
