- Teresa MNew Jersey10 contributionsBeautiful beach, tourist trapBeautiful beach , but too many vendors. You cannot sit down and relax peacefully without someone trying to sell you something. My little girl felt very uncomfortable at some points with strangers talking in her face and trying to touch her hair.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 11, 2023
- Melissa S8 contributionsGlen Castro’s surfing school! We only spent 1/2 day at this beach. But we had the pleasure to rent our boards and chairs from Glen and Angelina Castro. This couple made our time at the beach great. We rented 4 chairs and shade for $20 with unlimited use of their buggy boards and we rented a surf board for $10. I thought it was great value. Perfect spot at the beach. The both of them very genuine and attentive people. Glen teaches lessons and I saw one of his classes and his student had a hard time getting up, but Glen gave him some tips and the person started getting up immediately. He looked like a great teacher.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2024
- Hossein THouston, Texas177 contributionsRelaxing on the beach after long drive from MonteverdeLa Playa Espadilla Norte was a short bus ride from our hotel. The hotel offers shuttle at specific hours, however, there is a bus down the street that comes about every 10 to 15 minutes and it costs 380 Costa Rican colones. Both drop you off right at the beach. The beach is clean with gorgeous scenery. You can rent a cabana and chairs for $25. They give two boogie words to you for free. Surf lessons are also available for an hour for $45. There is also para sailing for about 15 minutes 120–140$. There are drinks available throughout the beach. These are offered by different companies we chose the one our Hotel had suggested Angelina. Going back to the hotel we decided to take the public bus not wait for the hotel shuttle to come.we had a great day.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 26, 2024

We have been to many beaches all across Costa Rica and were very disappointed (albeit expectedly so) by this beach.
It is a huge beach and would be beautiful but its extremely crowded and you get approached by sales guys, be it on the beach or when looking for parking (don’t go there with a car...). The water is filled with jet skis, banana rides and boats - if thats your type of thing, go for it. There is barely any natural shadow at the beach and if there is its occupied by locals selling stuff, so you will be forced to pay for expensive umbrellas.
We had such amazing beaches all over Costa Rica. Save yourself the trouble, skip this beach and go swimming somewhere else.

Beach is very beautiful and peaceful but full of people trying to hussle you for money. We found out later that parking is free in lots of places near the beach but as soon as you drive down there you will get parked by an attendant who will then ask you for money. You can probably say no, but we read that it's also customary to pay the attendant regardless of if it's legit or not. I didn't feel bad about it. What was more frustrating was all of the people coming up to us to sell us products/services we didn't want. It made it somewhat hard to relax. I recommend going farther north on the beach where there are less people.

The only drawback to this beach is that is not safe for any significant swimming because of rip tides. However, reasonably cautious playing in the surf is great. All sorts of amenities available- bar and restaurant, parasailing, surf lessons and chair and umbrella rentals. Bathrooms too.

Nice beach! Clean, find sand. Not many rocks in the water. Be careful of riptides that can show up suddenly though!
Lots to do on this beach, from surf lessons to parasailing. You can rent 2 chairs & umbrella for $10 USD, or 4 chairs & big shade pavilion for $20 USD. Nice for families, friends, or just by yourself.

Quepos might have been our favorite experience in our 10day trip of the Western region of Costa Rica. We asked around for which beaches to visit while we were there. The locals all mentioned Espadilla and told us to avoid Manuel Antonio(which we didn't and should have listened to them ha). Each night we walked to the end of Espadilla and sat under a palm tree to watch the surfers and sunset. It was beautiful.
Personally, we avoided the northern part of the beach at all costs. There was one day where there was NOT even one spot to sit due to all the rental chairs, umbrellas and tents that people put out trying to make a few colones...pretty irritating until you figure out where to go.

We have visited Manuel Antonio a few times and have some great experiences but be aware of the many hustlers who will try to sell you things and who offer beach service with umbrellas and chairs. We posted up in front of the main restaurants at the public beach, and got chairs, boogie boards and a canopy- we ended up ordering some bar food (calamari, nachos for our kids) and then some milk shakes a total of 6 single shot drinks over the course of the day and were hit with a bill for $310 USD! A total scam!!! Watch out for Pedro running out of Souvenir Lexy. 🤬😫
The beach is pretty laid back and easy for kiddos to play in the water and boogie board but bring your own drinks and go directly into the restaurants versus relying on beach service. Overall we had a great day but we’re left with a VERY sour taste in our mouth about the scammers and the lack of Pura Vida vibe in Manuel Antonio.

We were staying at Buenos Vista Beach Villas which is right on Espadilla Norte. You can rent lounge chairs if you are not staying at this property. I think there are other places that also rent out lounge chairs for the day. I highly recommend that for this beach.
The views are great. It’s a beautiful beach. There are some vendors walking the beach. They sell cigars, sno cones, coconuts, and other things. We purchased a coconut for $7 and they mixed it up with some rum….we figured coconut water and rum is sort of healthy…right??? It was delicious!
The sand is great. The water temps are great. We really loved our time hanging out on this beach. Go for a walk from end to end as the tide recedes. It’s a great way to spend a day!

The beach is quiet and secluded, a stone's throw away from the Manuel Antonio Park. We went there when we realized that tickets to MA needed to be booked ahead of time and we were already geared up for the beach. We had a great time at Playa Espadilla Norte and spent a nice day there.
If you can, bring your own chairs and blankets. Also, this is not a beach for swimming as much as it was for wading because of the strong rip currents and the undertow. However, the nature is right there, all around, and it was a beautiful beach.
Watch out for the many parking attendants. There is so much shady business going on. We smartly avoided paying and then tipped the guy who was 'watching' the car a few colon and left.

Our extended family enjoyed two half days at this beautiful beach, where reasonably priced umbrellas, chairs, food, and drink are available. Lifeguards were excellent and the water was warm. Something for everyone.

A fantastic experience! The beach is lovely and so fun to build sandcastles and play in the surf! Loved the vendors who walked down the beach selling everything from refrigerator magnets to coco locos which were fresh coconuts opened before you and pina colada. My favorite vendor was a young man who made creatures out of the palm fronds. He made an angel fish and a grasshopper for us.
The vendors are so polite and if we said no that was just fine. Had an amazing empanada there. I loved being able to order food and drinks on the beach and having the luxury of the chairs and tent for shade. Definitely try the granizado made with ice shavings from a block on ice right in front of you with powdered milk and condensed milk. It was delicious!

How is the parking at the beach?
Written May 11, 2019
Hard to find. Mostly street parking. Grab a cheap taxi from the top of the hill.

Hi TA, We saw the guys with the horses on the beach...Can you take shirt rides on them, does anyone know the cost?
Written March 15, 2019
I only saw one party hiring for a horse ride on the beach. As for the cost, I do not know. Like most rentals there the charge is in US dollars.

Hi, we are looking to take in a sunset here and then maybe grab a drink somewhere after. What is the best bar/restaurant within walking distance to the beach?
Written April 20, 2018
There are several good places across the street from the beach. Most of them are good.
