Oscar - very knowledgeable!!
May 2021 • Family
Went went on the 1/2 day tour of the Manuel Antonio national park. Oskar picked us up from the hotel. In the way to the park - he talked about the surrounding area. As soon as we stepped into the park, Oskar was finding all kinds of birds. We would have NEVER seen any of the animals without him. We saw….humming birds, two and three toed sloths, white faced money and howler monkeys to name a few. We then took a little stop at the beach - the water was warm and the beach sand was silky smooth. He offered to take family photos whenever the opportunity presented itself.

A wonderful day at the park with a knowledgeable tour guide - no complaints!

Amazing Guide!
Feb 2021
Oscar is extremely knowledgeable regarding the birds of Costa Rica. We spent 3 different days exploring Manuel Antonio, Carara, Tarcoles River and Esquipulas. We saw so many species of birds that I never thought would even be possible. Oscar worked to get every bird on our list for the area.
We loved every part of our tour from the driver, to the restaurants he chose, to the boat trip on the river. He made our trip to Costa Rica one to remember!
I'm looking forward to booking another tour with Oscar on our next journey to Costa Rica.

Oscar was so knowledgeable and a true professional. We learned so much on our tour! I hope we can connect again on our next visit to Costa Rica.

A highlight of our Costa Rica trip
Feb 2020
Oscar’s Esquipulas birding tour was a highlight of our pre-lockdown Costa Rica vacation in February. He’s very friendly, well organized and an enthusiastic and skilled spotter. We not only enjoyed all the birds, but also watching the squirrel monkeys move through the trees during their morning “commute”. We also really like the pavilion we stopped at for some food and the really wonderful coffee. I spent a long time taking pictures of the local hummingbirds as well as all the other gorgeous birds in the area. Highly recommended for both casual birders and the more serious.

Do Not Let Oscar Herrera Plan A Trip For You
Dec 2020 • Family
I suppose that Oscar Herrera can do an OK job when he’s hired by some other company, and told exactly where to go and what to do for a few hours. I made the mistake of letting him plan an 8 day trip. The guide I really wanted from a previous trip to Costa Rica was not available, so I hired Oscar Herrera. Big mistake. Just a couple of examples: we wanted to go to San Gerardo de Dote, where we went with our previous great birding guide. Oscar took us there, but then it became obvious that he had no idea what to do or where to go. So he made me pay for a local guide who was just as awful. Another example—he brought us to an hotel claiming that it was a wonderful birding hotel. When I saw that it was not true, he had to admit that he had never been there before. There are quite a few more examples. During the long rides (2-4 hours long), he did not bothered to give information on the surroundings. He just sat in the car while my son drove. Not to mention his attitude. For example, when I became violently ill of food poisoning after eating in a restaurant he took us to, and consequently could not go on a boat ride, he did not even bother to ask how I was.
We travel to many places for bird photography. I have had quite a few guides, all of them good. Oscar Herrera is the worst guide I have ever had.

Wonderful Birding with Oscar Herrera
Mar 2020
We were picked up at 5 am and after a drive up into the mountains we got a very nice breakfast. It was a wonderful little place with a lot of flowers and birds in all colours! Oscar could all the times find new bird species, and tell us a lot about bird life in Costa Rica. He is a very good ornitologist who we can warmly recommend.

Tour With Oscar Herrrera Mena at Manuel Antonio National Park
Feb 2020
We had a morning tour with Oscar at Manuel Antonio National Park last month. He is a fantastic guide and my wife and I can recommend him without reservation. He did a great job in enabling us to see as much as possible while deftly negotiating the crowds at Manuel Antonio. If we are fortunate to ever return to this area of Costa Rica, I think that we would be better able to utilize all of his expertise at sites other than Manuel Antonio that he uses for guiding---especially for birds. Oscar is friendly, knowledgeable, and well respected by other area guides.

Oscar Herrara, best birding guide ever!
Mar 2020
Last week my husband and I took an early morning birding tour with Oscar Herrara and it was nothing short of amazing! We found Oscar through a search on Trip Advisor, we had visited Manual Antonio National Park a few days earlier and were disappointed that it was so busy and we did not see many birds.
Heinen, the driver, picked up at 5:00 am and after a 30-minute drive, we arrived in Esquipulas. Over 3+ hours we saw at least 46 species of birds including several toucans, slaty-tailed trogons, flycatchers, woodpeckers, colourful tanagers, many species of hummingbirds, +++.
Without a doubt it was the best-guided tour we had over the month we spent in Costa Rica. Oscar spoke perfect English was very knowledgeable about the birds and ecology of Costa Rica, he had a passion and energy that made the trip both educational and fun.... and it was quiet! very few tourists.
We also had a tasty breakfast in a small coffee plantation - it was a beautiful place owned by Carlos, whom we met. We had traditional rice, beans, choice of eggs and lots of fruit and the best Cafe Dona Clara coffee from Carlos's coffee plantation. Oscar includes this in his tour.
If you are visiting Quepos and are looking for a birding guide you won't find a better one than Oscar.

Esquipulas Birding Tour Februar 2020
Feb 2020
We had a terrific early morning birding tour with Oscar Herrera near his village Villa Nueva and in the new birding spot Esquipulas. We saw around 50 different species and Oscar was an excellent guide in spotting and naming the birds. The Esquipulas spot was also terrific (with a lovely breakfast) and an enormous variety of birds very well displayed.

I would love to go back!
Mar 2019
Prepare to relax! It's a little hike to the beach but worth it...wear/bring shorts so you can swim. Definitely bring the binoculars...the dark canopy requires 8x or 10x of 42mm lens to see monkeys and tons of birds.
