We had so much fun the first time we went here, we decided that the smartest thing we could do would be to go back! Our initial trip was in 2019, and we returned in February of 2020. We are a family of 4, with two girls 12 and 14, who now officially think that Costa Rica, and specifically Peaks and Swells, is the best place in the world. All the reviews are accurate. The location and the people are amazing. When we go on vacation, we look for an activity that we can all participate in and that will challenge us to learn something new. Peaks and Swells checks all these boxes. In our first year, we did not know what to expect. But for year 2, the girls already had a plan on what they wanted to do and accomplish. The surf staff does a great job with everyone, but specifically the kids. They allow them to challenge themselves if they want, but in a controlled and safe setting. They help them learn the correct technique (if you are not experienced surfers) and then let them apply it in a range of settings. Our girls still talk about their surf bros, Diego and Randall, on a weekly basis. The pictures we have of the 4 of them, in various settings, are filled with huge smiles, some minor sunburn, and a lot of zinc sunscreen. It is the perfect thing to add a smile to your face any day. Also, our kids now liberally use the phrase "getting smashed" across the board, even if it is not in context of getting caught in a set paddling out. The surf coaches show up every day, with a smile on their face, and an awesome attitude. If you want to surf every second, they will make it happen. If you want to surf a bit, then sit on the beach, eat some pineapple, or play some soccer, they are in on that too. One of the coolest things to see, for us, is the confidence that the kids build, not only in the water, but with the coaches. Our kids are swimmers and comfortable in water settings. But the waves can get big there, and we are 2500 miles from home, and that can be intimidating. However, we see the exact opposite response. Our kids paddled out and took on wave after wave, independent of the size. Some of those waves ended in great success, others ended up in the Playa Hermosa washing machine cycle. But every one of them ended with a smile and a lesson. We appreciate the confidence that the coaching staff instills in the kids (and adults!) in an activity that is new to a lot of us. It translates to our home life as well. This summer, our kids were paddling in to waves on the Great Lakes. It was not 90 degrees with 88 degree water, but there were waves, and so they were in them. It is so cool to see it in a different setting, all based on the foundational work in Costa Rica. The camp setting remains fantastic. All the meals are family style, so you can sit down as a group, relax, and have few cares. Everything is organized, from the chalk board that tells you what time everything will occur that day (a personal favorite of ours that we do not have to make ANY decisions) to the adventures the kids can take and the yoga in the AM/PM depending on when surfing occurs. We are not die-hard yoga people at home, but for the week we are in Costa Rica, we jump in and make it happen. The yoga studio is in the jungle, with the waves crashing in the background, and birds and wildlife running around. It is hard to find a more peaceful setting. This review is written with a lot of context to the kids, because we think it is so great for them. But all the same accolades translate to the adults. We have as much fun on the waves, we learn as much from the coaches, and we spend as much (well, this might be a stretch) time in the pool. The activity is what we go for, but the relaxation is amazing. We are busy there, but there is enough time to sit in a hammock, or walk down and just watch the waves crash on the beach. It is nice to not feel rushed, or frantic, on vacation, and this place makes that happen. So we could write paragraph after paragraph about how much we love it. We are signed up again for this year, and have our fingers crossed that the surf gods intervene in this crazy world and grant us another week of access to their playground. We look forward to seeing all our friends again at the camp. We know they have been catching some waves, on their own, which makes us happy. But we also know that catching them together, with us, will make us even happier. Until then, we will buy passion fruit at our local grocery store, even if they are small and you cannot see the ocean while you eat them (or "steal" them from the kitchen when you think no one is looking). We will make beans and rice for breakfast, and buy our Lizano off Amazon. And we will talk fondly of the previous couple years at the camp, while looking to add another this year.

My husband and I went to PNS for our anniversary celebration and it was the best vacation we've ever had. The camp has accommodations much like a hotel room, including AC which was wonderful. Our room was cleaned every day and the privacy was very good. The food was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We are vegetarians and I also don't eat dairy, which was communicated to the staff before our trip. The cooks were so accommodating and friendly. The food was some of the best food I've ever eaten; no restaurant compared. It was very healthy and fresh; everything was so colorful and beautifully presented. We ate so many fruits and vegetables and all of it seasoned perfectly with so much flavor. The staff didn't feel like staff; at the end of the week they felt like family. We really enjoyed getting to know Andy, Tash, and Carolina, and of course our surf coach Erick. The professionalism of this place is very high yet they are also down to earth and so friendly and personable. We really had fun learning to surf and felt like we improved by leaps and bounds after just a week. Erick was so patient, so kind, and so helpful to us. Every night a schedule was posted so we'd know what time to be ready in the morning. We'd come down for breakfast and shortly thereafter load into the cars and head for the beach. All we had to do was wear a swimsuit, put on sunscreen, and bring a hat. We didn't need a camera--the staff takes care of that. We didn't need a chair or a towel--they bring those. We didn't need water or food--they bring fresh pineapple and watermelon and coconuts and water bottles and muffins every day. We didn't need directions to the beach--they drive you there. It's usually a lot of work to go to the beach because of all the preparation. This was another of my favorite aspects of the trip--no stress because you don't have to figure out where to eat, you don't have to get directions, you don't have to pack your own gear and hope you remembered everything. We also thought the experience had the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure. We've had vacations in which we relaxed the whole time and so we got kind of bored. We've also had vacations in which we were on the go constantly in order to see everything and we were exhausted by the end. This trip left us relaxed but never bored; we got plenty of exercise from surfing and daily yoga (the yoga instructors were amazing) so we weren't restless. The pool is the perfect temperature and so beautiful. I have some fears about the ocean and that week I always felt safe. The surf coaches never pushed us beyond our comfort zone. They were encouraging and wanted us to try new things only when we were ready. They totally respected what we wanted to do and how we wanted to learn. I knew if I every got into trouble they would be there to help me. The staff is so knowledgeable about the tides and the geography so that they can choose the appropriate beaches and times for surfing for our ability level. Make sure you bring zinc oxide sunscreen. Regular sunscreen won't help much. And a hat that will stay on (with a chin strap). Our trip was enhanced because we didn't get sunburned. I also recommend something to treat swimmer's ear just in case. One of the other guests had to visit a medical clinic for swimmer's ear, and my husband and I both developed it after getting home. If I had to think of a criticism of PNS, the only thing I can think of is that the rate should be lower for people that don't drink alcohol. For those that do, you'll be pleased to know that beer and wine were offered frequently and plentifully and of course, included in the price. You won't be sorry you went to PNS! We started planning our second trip back within a couple of weeks of arriving home. We are going to bring our children to experience it next time.

We just returned from an amazing week at Peaks 'n Swells Surf camp and we are still in awe. Such a fun time! From the moment we arrived we knew we were in good hands. We arrived to the most amazing lunch. Our group of foodies couldn't help but land in the kitchen time and time again to chat with the talented, delightful chefs who deliver the most beautiful, fresh, healthy dishes. There might have been a bit of whispering going on in the kitchen sharing the secret ingredients. We devoured every meal. Yum. We were a group of 12 (3 families) all new to surfing. I'm not sure which I enjoyed more, surfing or watching everyone cheer each other on. It was all such a blast. When the kids were wiped out from surfing, their instructors hung out with them in the water while they played in the waves---us adults had nothing to worry about. The pre-dinner videos were a blast to watch while sipping an evening cocktail/mocktail. And they really helped. I see that there are many long reviews of how amazing Peaks 'n Swells is, and they are all true. They are a group of good people who want you to have a good time and are genuine about it. The coaches were fantastic (and fun to hang out with). We loved meeting everyone who quickly became friends. We couldn't have asked for a better week. It was really fun to learn something new with the kids-- in a moment of frustration my 15 year old daughter gave me a few sweet words of encouragement, just what I needed--and I'll hold onto that moment. And it is good for kids to see parents fall time and time again, and get back up and keep trying! So for all of those families out there looking for a great, active vacation you can't go wrong with Peaks 'n Swells. Never surfed--that's OK, you will. And you will be glad you were active when you land at the dinner table where you can't help but want seconds! We all hope to return!

We booked this trip in hopes of getting to have an activity filled vacation with some rest and relaxation mixed in, while experiencing a new setting. And we got all we could hope for and more. Costa Rica is beautiful and amazing on its own, but Peaks 'n Swells allowed our family to get an authentic experience while getting 5-star treatment, amazing food, great accommodations and we felt like we were taken in by the local town of Montezuma. After the surfing, yoga and fun activities, everyday was rewarding. The surf sessions were awesome, the local instructors genuinely cared about and improved our surf skills. The location, grounds and villas are as good or better than any resort you could book. Every aspect of the trip exceeded our expectations. No review will do it justice other than to say we have already booked next year and our entire family cannot wait to get back.

What’s one of the best family trips you’ve ever taken that nobodies probably ever heard of? As of this writing, a week at Peaks N’ Swells surf camp would be it for us. My wife, my 4-year old son, and I all agree that we’re going back. It was that much fun. I must admit that I was a little worried that my wife would be bored with surfing. If not bored, overwhelmed by being in the sun and sea for too many hours each day. I was confident that my son would be OK. He loves anything on a board. But I felt that this trip could drastically shape his love or fear of the ocean. All those worries went away on the first day. The crew at Peaks N’ Swells are amazing. They took great care of us. Everyone was extremely friendly and kind. This includes the owners, coaches, cooks, staff, masseuses, yoga teachers, etc. Literally everybody there was amazing. We really felt well-cared. They genuinely cared about their guests. And its the people that made the experience so positive. The coaches here really shine. Their focus and attention on their guests really makes a difference. My son couldn’t wait to surf with his coach Diego each day. My wife felt her coach Selena was perfect for her learning style, which is “don’t rush me”. I got to work with 2 coaches over the week which gave me a chance to learn from different perspectives. Dani did a great job coaching me on the fundamentals. Audrey did a great job coaching me on how to read the waves and the mental side of surfing such as being patient. The depth of experiencing of their coaches helped us all progress very quickly. They were all extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. The food was something we all looked forward to each day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were always served fresh. The meals were clean, healthy and delicious. These were gourmet meals and some even looked pretty. And there was always an abundance of it. Each night we were treated to something different so it never got boring. And I felt the food was a good match to replenish our bodies after a long day of activity. I didn’t feel guilty eating too much. My son is a very picky eater. Without asking, the chef noticed he wasn’t eating and asked us what he liked. The next day he had his favorite foods prepared. The room we stayed in was cozy and comfortable. That said, I was envisioning a villa on the beach with an ocean view. Earlier we were living in an over-the-water bungalow in the Maldives. So my expectations were very high. However, after the first day at Peaks N’ Swells I was perfectly fine with not having a TV and all the other accoutrements that tempt you to stay inside. We were so tired at the end of the day that we were in bed right after dinner. We were up early the next day. And in between we were always outdoors doing something fun. There is no shortage of activities to keep you outdoors. Our room was was perfect for our needs, which was to provide us with a good night sleep. One of the unique features of their property is that its located right in front of a sea turtle beach. Every day we were there we saw turtles hatching and swimming out to sea when the sun set. A group of local volunteers were there to make sure that none of us stepped on them. Seeing baby sea turtle hatchings was on my bucket-list. To see them every day was awesome. I highly recommend Peaks N’ Swells for any family looking to surf together. The owners said my wife and son would be catching waves before the end of the trip and she was 100% right. And when we weren’t on the beach there was so much to do to keep us busy. It was one of the best trips that none of my family or friends had ever heard of or ever considered. Now we’ve got them extremely curious. Don’t hesitate to book a trip with Peaks N’ Swells. You will love it as much as my family did.
