Montezuma beach was Avery nice beach with green trees, white sand and nice water. The village next to it is very pleasant as well. At 16.00 (4pm) little turtles are released to go into the water. Unfortunately it did not happen when I was there, because it does not happen every day, as the turtles obviously don't always hatch.

Be careful - these waves at high tide will kick your butt! I nearly tore my knee trying to body surf in some 9-11ft tall waves one evening. The ocean is amazingly beautiful and warm here, and there are always fun people partying on the beach. At mid day, its best to be avoided - its so intense the sands will blister your feet. Go early in the morning or after 3pm.

Went here every day. Sunsets especially are gorgeous with the changing light. Reasonably safe swimming here. Lovely and worth a visit.

Playa Montezuma is a small beach located within the town that shares its namesake. Its in the shape of a cove but features a fair bit of rocky headland which makes it not particularly suitable for swimming. Because its located on the southern aspect of peninsula Nicoya you don’t get a sunset over the sea - it sets over the mountains.

What was most disappointing about this beach on our recent visit is that it is absolutely coated in driftwood (possibly a legacy from hurricane Julia) as well as garbage.

Given this is meant to be a tourist town focused around a beach I am surprised that the locals don’t clean this place up. It really wouldn’t take all that long.

The real beach is a half-hour walk to the left. Playa Grande. This beach is rocky and dangerous, but nice to look at.

Montezuma beach is wonderful for sun bathing or just walking. The sand is fine and the rocks close to shore provide the opportunity to see small sea life as the water recedes.

This place wasn’t for us. There are a couple of small beach spots here, which were pretty to look at. However, one of them had a small river(?) (looked more like a sewage system that emptied out to the ocean) that looked quite stagnant — we didn’t dare go close.

The tiny village has two groceries (differing in size). One can pretty much prepare good meals from the items sold from the larger one. We’ve always been eating out during our four weeks in Costa Rica, but the prices in this touristic(?) area was just too much for what one gets. We ate at the supposedly best rated restaurant here, but it was just average and (we’ve eaten several casados in so many places already).

We’re relatively open-minded and we’ve been in several different countries/cultures. We understand (or maybe not?) the “Pura Vida” way of life, but this beach village was just very unkempt and seemed to have not much order — it didn’t match the prices of the products and services at all, which we felt was simply unjustified.

If not for the lodging we had on a hill and seeing the wildlife from it (hence the general two-star rating), we would’ve left this area much sooner, sad to say. The drive here wasn’t the most comfortable (quite rough over the mountains/hills), which we accepted, but to see this destination in the end, we felt it wasn’t worth the trip.

This is a small beach in the town of Montezuma. Water is bathwater warm, sand nothing spectacular...there are other beaches in this area of Nicoya that are better. People seems to come here for the bohemian life and feel...

We went out and the very first part of the beach is great. But as you work further east it gets more unpredictable. The rip currents, and just pulls of the tide were kind of all over where going in the water seemed a little more interesting. I would recommend being a little more safe if you swim here.
