While it is definitely the most Americanized of the places we visited in Costa Rica it has its pros and cons. Pros. Great waves. Great surfing schools. Great food. Variety in food. Lots of grocery stores. Fast food if you like it. Lots of bars....More

Busy yet not crowded, but brown pebble sand not giving that postcard impression. Good surf though. Many small places next to the beach provide the shower and lockers facilities

Nice beach with black sand. We stayed at Bahia Azul right on the beach. Listened to the surf. Lots of surfers and swimmers. Will go back.

We enjoyed the beach but need to be cautious with children due to the size of the waves. Take plenty of sunscreen and water.

Walked the streets and shops before dinner. Safe clean and tourist haven. Enjoy each of the friendly small shops while stopping here and there for a beer.

There are several lifeguard stations along the beach. I did not inspect any of the stations, but would suppose that there are rescue/flotation aides at the stations. However, the best bet is to use rather common sense... More

By car (a rented one or with a friend). It´s at least an hour and a half drive. I´d strongly advise you not to do this by night. The highway (not such) is lone and dark. By public transportation, forget it! Even locals do... More
