About
Pura Vida Gardens and Waterfalls is unique in Costa Rica. It is truly a "Visual Masterpiece". The gardens begin with the natural beauty of Costa Rica and four waterfalls in the property with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. To this millions of plants, flowers and orchids from all over the world have been added. Manicured walkways meander long a river and at the crest of the mountain which make the entire 50 acre gardens accessible to all. Have lunch in our restaurant and browse the gift shop that offers authentic Costa Rica gifts.

Beautiful but closed
Mar 2021 • Family
FYI we drove up in March 2021 a few weeks ago and it is closed. Thankfully they took pity on us and the grounds keeper was there and opened it up. It was so nice to have the whole on place to ourselves though. We found a pair of nesting macaws. It is beautiful to be so high up on the mountain and trees. The trails seemed like they needed a bit of repair and upkeep but gorgeous flowers etc.

Beautiful Grounds

Took a bus tour to this out-of-the-way garden on a hilltop. Beautiful gardens with a view of the ocean & a waterfall. Owner is open & friendly. Driving in a bus is difficult due to winding Mt road. Worth it, however!

Beautiful gardens and view
Feb 2020
We visited this mountain garden and were very impressed. Long paths and stairs led through the gardens. We saw eagles and macaws. The view was fantastic. There were only a few people there so we often had parts of the garden to ourselves.

Come for the flora not the waterfall

As a waterfall destination, Pura Vida Gardens is a complete fail. The waterfall is off in the distance and this time of year little water is flowing.

As a nature walk with myriad tropical plants, it is well worth the trip... and perhaps the $20. I enjoyed the extensive pathways and saw several colorful frogs, 2 red macaws, and myriad tropical plants in color.

I wad fortunate to arrive early in the morning and had the place to myself. As I was leaving at 10:15 several buses from cruise ships were arriving. I am glad that I missed the crowds.

This is not a waterfall tour! If you are into botany and tropical plants this may be a great option. I paid $80 for my family of four (two teenagers). I did attach the “waterfall view” and was underwhelmed. It is a 20 minute garden walk. We did get to see lots of plants and birds like parrots and toucans but the bar/restaurant was also closed at the time of visit. Save the money and go watch the sunset.

This may be the only way to see these particular falls without killing yourself
Nov 2019
kind of pricey for what you get but there aren't a lot of things to do in this neck of the woods. There is a trail that will take you to the base of the falls, but it is not for beginners…..hell it may not even be for advanced hikers. Anyway, it was certainly beyond our capabilities, so we decided to visit the gardens instead. The view of the falls is from an overlook within the park and the falls are probably 1/2 mile away. So, you don't get a very good view, but this is what you can get without having to hike down to the falls and kill yourself. The gardens are pretty interesting as well with a series of paths that wander up and down and through all the flora. There are some very cool flowers and plants that probably only grow in this particular environment. There is a fair amount of up and down along the paths and it is probably not suitable for the elderly, infirm, or overweight (at least not seriously overweight…I survived it). There were a handful of parrots/macaws flying around which were quite colorful and made for good photo opportunities. Not Recommended

Beautiful view but a bit disappointing
Dec 2019 • Couples
For 20$ US each person you expect a bit more than a 30 minute walk in a garden. The view is beautiful from up there, but the drive isn’t really worth it.

Most beautiful gardens \i have ever seen
Aug 2019
Our group enjoyed a wonderful ride up the mountain in a Mercedes van. When we arrived at the gardens we were given a refreshing drink by the host. We saw thousands of beautiful plants. We also saw many beautiful birds including scarlet macaws.

I spotted the numerous signs for this place on my way to Play Herradura and thought it would be fun to see a waterfall. After a very steep and winding drive, which was super fun, you get to Pura Vida. It’s $20, which is way too much for what you get. The gardens are nice but you’re at least a mile from the waterfalls. Not at all worth the price. For what it is, maybe I’d pay $5. Now... on your way to Pura Vida, you’ll pass a small shack with 3 parking spots across the road. There’s a sign that says you can swim in the waterfall. I don’t know the name of the place or anything but it turns out you hike about 2.5 miles through the jungle to get up close to the waterfall. It’s spectacular. This experience is also $20, which again seems high to walk on a trail but the payoff is incredible. It’s very strenuous and pretty tricky in places so you need to be in reasonable shape... but I can’t recommend it highly enough.
