An absolute must do in Costa Rica. All details taken care of to perfection. You are picked up at your hotel in a new comfortable van. You travel through a national park and arrive for the boat ride to Tortugero through wide canals with lush vegetation. You arrive at the lodge and are checked in by Sven the tour guide. The property is on the water with the ocean on the other side. Rooms have screened windows and you feel like you are in another time yet you are perfectly comfortable. The highlight is the boat tour of the national park. It is small .intimate , detailed and unique each time. We saw monkeys, a sloth and our guide rescued a toucan. We also traveled in small waterways lush with jungle foliage and wildlife. Sven is personable, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. No wonder the others on our tour come back to him every time they are in town. Sven is prof if his country and knows every tidbit of history and local lore. Above all he cares about making his tour the best for all of his guests. We had a freak rainstorm when we were leaving and Sven worked all of his contacts for us to work it out for us

As a group of 10 with ages from 17-60+, it was hard to imagine an outing that could enthrall everybody equally, but that is exactly what we found with Riverboat Francesca, led by Sven and Modesto. Our confidence was high from the outset with the incredible responsiveness to all of our planning questions. And when circumstances changed our plans unexpectedly, no detail was neglected. The real treat began the moment Sven and Modesto picked up our group, with their friendly and welcoming manner and cute, comfortable bus. Once on the canal, it was clear that we were in the hands of skilled captains and wildlife experts, and we saw many amazing animals and plants, never feeling rushed. Laguna Lodge where we stayed was both luxurious and part of the natural surroundings, and every outing was an adventure. The details are too numerous to list in a review, so I will simply say that we are wholeheartedly happy to have chosen to see Tortuguero specifically with Riverboat Francesa, and I would recommend Sven and his company in a heartbeat to anybody wanting to explore that area of Costa Rica.

Of all the things we saw and did during our stay in Cost Rica, it was our time with Modesto and his son Sven that we'll remember the best and the most fondly. They are both incredible at spotting wildlife, answering any and all questions about local culture and history, but it was their friendly manner and easy going vibe that made the day the most relaxing and somehow simultaneously invigorating. Our four-year-old had as great a time as we did and that says a lot. I won't give details, but Modesto is a truly amazing individual who has lived an incredible life. Sven, you've got a lot to live up to! ;)

Father and son, Modesto and Sven know every inch of the canals and where to find birds and animals, and have a trained, sharp eye! In perfect English, with seemingly all the time in the world, they introduced us to water birds, crocodiles, howler monkeys, and sloths dangling from a tree. We had a fabulous day on the canals with a lovely lunch. Visit in September or October when the area does not have rainy season, and the rest of Costa Rica does.

I cannot say enough amazing things about Riverboat Francesca and Tortuguero. Sven and Modesto were absolutely AMAZING. They both were so knowledgeable, accommodating and kind. Over the course of our trip I felt like we weren't just on a tour but on a trip with long lost friends. Every once and a while on our adventures we meet people that we stay in touch with over the years and I truly hope that they prove to be some of those people. The trip up and down the river was so completely unbelievable. Its like being in the scene of a movie or a book. Something you have only see on a nature show or envisioned in your imagination. One of my bucket list items was to see a sloth and they did everything they could to make sure that happened, and low and behold I saw not one sloth but three. Modesto has some of the most fascinating stories and Sven is so incredibly knowledgeable. We saw so many unbelievable things to include lots of monkeys, nesting sea turtles, giant iguana, macaws, toucan, hundreds of other birds, fascinating plants, and so many other things. I would say about 75% of the pictures from our 14 day trip came from our 3 days in Tortuguero. I honestly could go on and on about how amazing our experience was with them but I will just say that you cannot go wrong with book a trip with Sven and Modesto.
