We really enjoyed our chocolate tour with Claire and Rafael. We learned so much about how chocolate came to be, how the process has changed, etc, I now know the difference between powder, paste and butter and could make and taste them all. It was very hands on and delicious also! We would highly recommend!

This chocolate experience was beyond all expectations. Rafael is truly a national treasure. He shared so much information on not only the history of cacao and chocolate making, but also natural history of the area, the indigenous peoples of Costa Rica, the history of Tortuguero, and more. It was a delightful 2 hours of tasting, making, and learning. Thank you so much!

CHOCOLATE TOUR: We were in Tortuguero for 2 days, and this tour topped our list as a fabulous family activity. We did the tour with our three children (ages 16, 13, and 10). Raphael and Claire do an amazing job hosting a bean to bar chocolate experience. They are extremely knowledgeable, flexible (when we heard the holler of monkeys outside they were more than happy to pause what we were doing, and let us run out to take photos of the monkeys while they regaled us with stories of their experiences with the monkeys as well as knowledge of how they live), and engaged all of us in the history, politics, science, and love of cocao. Our tour started outside – seeing cocoa trees and the fruit that grow on them and then moved “inside” – I say this in quotes because the space was well ventilated, and was more like a porch. We were surprised to taste fresh cocao – which had white flesh and were pulp-covered and tasted like lychee. They guided us through the process of how the fruit are culled, stored, dried, toasted, and then used for various food items. They had “add ins” (vanilla, pepper (for heat – sorry I don’t remember what kind), cinnamon, sugar) and we all made our drinks to suit our own taste. We went in July 2021, and felt the safety protocols for COVID-19 were adhered to, while still allowing us (with great ventilation) to try the chocolate at various stages. Raphael and Claire were wonderful hosts – we highly recommend this activity (especially for families with children).

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved this cacao experience and we couldn’t recommend it enough. It is a bean to bar experience with lots of chances to sample cacao along the way and the opportunity to make your own cacao in the traditional way which you can bring home at the end. Rafael was extremely interesting and knowledgeable and we loved listening and learning from him. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the area.

This chocolate tour was amazing. Rafael was super knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. He was so kind and obviously passionate about what he did. We had our tour later and ended up being with him for about 2.5 - 3 hours just talking and picking his brain. We were visited by a troop of Spider monkeys on the cocoa tree part of the tour and he patiently waited as we lost our minds and took pictures. Once inside we followed his lead and ate anything and everything he offered while listening to the history of the cocoa bean. Eventually, we had to leave, but we got some amazing chocolate and phenomenal memories out of our time with Rafael. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone and everyone staying in this off the beaten pack place.
