Puerto Viejo is very low key... and the beach is too. Not crowded but with nice warm, blue waters and opportunities to snorkel. Stores, bars, restaurants face the beach and there's more a block away. Very much a Caribbean feel to this part of Costa...More

Love this beach. Beach vendors come by to sell you treats through out the day. Lawn chairs, hats, fresh coconut, fruit salad, fried plantains, massages...all without bugging you - just a gentle ask and then they walk away. Hot sun, white sand, amazing waves, sloths,...More

This beach is warm, clear, and swimmable...as well as being right in town in close proximity to everything, however it is very littered as the bar crowd has left their garbage all over the place. Its a beautiful spot, but if youre looking for a...More

This little town is perfect. Everything about it. The people, the beaches, the friendly beach dogs, the drinks and the overall atmosphere. The nightlife is tons of fun! It's really hard to leave here. Laziest town but the best.

There are numerous beaches in Puerto Viejo, but Playa Cocles was fabulous. A beautiful setting, clean, a nice crowd. It's hugely popular with surfers, but you can swim also in the small life guarded area nearer to town. However, you do need to be careful,...More

We stayed in the Vacation Rental Casa Fiesta (check them out!), and the rooms are on the beach! Soft black sand from the rain forest. It's beautiful and in October virtually deserted. It gets hot during the day because.....it's black! If you go further south...More

I am taking the bus to Puerto Viejo from San Jose. I am staying at The Lotus Garden and the only address indicated is - across from Salsa Brava. How far is this from the bus station? Can I walk, if so, in what direction or take taxi/local bus, if any. What is Salsa Brava? Thanks in advance.
