More than just a Chocalat Tour
Sep 2020
***This review is for September 2019***

We had some time to spare due to our flight being canceled, so we decided to sign up last minute for this coffee and chocolate tour. Wow, did we luck out! The coffee shop itself is low key, cool vibe, hut-like. The tour when we went was lead by the actual owner, an American expat, pretty cool/interesting/funny human being. He walks you through the cacao farm with delicious samples along the way. You do have to walk up steep hills for part of it, so if you're not in good shape or have health problems be aware of this. but if you can make it, the view at the top is sooo worth it. One of the most gorgeous views of the Caribbean coast you could find.

Surprisingly …. Worth the time!

Not your typical tour! Enjoyed every moment of this tour, as Dexter (guide) was amazing and informative. The path was beautiful as we saw many animals along the way (sloths). The final view is stunning and the process of chocolate making is yummy and cool.

Also, the coffee shop is good too! We even went the next day for another bowl of ice cream (we were with kids so we sacrificed and took them again)!

Such delicious and smooth chocolate!! Their vegan and gluten free options are legit and so yummy! I had their vegan chocolate chip and banana bread muffin and I would come back for that alone - the other vegan options sounded amazing and the next time I’m in town, I’ll be by to try them out!! The young lady behind the counter was so friendly and patient with us as we figured out colones (haha) and she did everything with a smile! The entire staff really did - welcoming, funny, and just such good vibes. The upstairs cafe area was also so peaceful and would be great for working remotely, reading a book, or just enjoying a coffee with ocean views. Everything is sustainable and ethically sourced which just solidifies the goodness in the hearts of the people who own and operate this place!

The highlight of our trip to Puerto Viejo
Apr 2021 • Family
Our family of three decided to take the chocolate tour after reading some disturbing reviews about the animal “sanctuaries” in the area. We are so happy we made this decision. Not only did we get to learn some very fascinating information about the cacao industry and how their chocolate is made, as well as taste the chocolate (which is the best handmade chocolate I’ve tried... just sugar and cacao, wow), we got to see and learn about a lot of the wildlife in their natural habitat. We saw many toucans, sloths, frogs, spiders and other native wildlife.

Our tour guide, Oscar, was very informative, patient, funny and charismatic and really made our trip memorable. He answered all of the questions asked by the tourists and made us all laugh. The tour ends at the gift shop where you can buy chocolate bars to take home, which we definitely did

We suggest getting some hot chocolate or coffee before or after the tour as it is divine!! The food seemed very good too. We are going back there for breakfast this morning and to get more chocolate to bring home.

Do this tour! It is worth every dollar and your won’t regret it!

Great On Many Levels
Apr 2021
We hesitated about checking this out. That would have been a big mistake. The walking tour was absolutely amazing. Not only was is full of information about where the good stuff comes from, but it's also a bit of a wildlife walk as well. We had been really disappointed that after nearly two weeks, we had not seen one sloth in the wild. We then saw five or six at close range just during the hike up the mountain, as well as frogs, spiders, giant ants, etc. And our guide, Daniel, was well informed on all of it. It's an amazing operation with a great story behine it. The chocolate sampling at the top of the mountain was fantastic. After the hike back down, we decided to check out the cafe and it also did not disappoint. I really wish we had known about this place as we would have frequented it for breakfast more often. Do not pass this experience up.

Dan is a great tour guide! We saw 3 sloths on the way up as well! We also saw a couple poisonous frogs which was cool. After the tour you get 10% off anything in the cafe for the remainder of your trip!

WiFi is Strong, Cacao is SUPER & very vegan friendly spot

How to convey my love for this place?! It’s by far one of the best things about my two month stay here in Puerto Viejo. Living in Cocles I cycle here from my Air B n B in under 5-6 min pretty much every other day.

Sometimes I go for the strong reliable WiFi, sometimes I see a sloth in the tree (yes this happened and is a highlight of my visit) sometimes I get the amazing chocolate bars or the BEST toast and jam I’ve ever had but one thing I always get is the SUPER MONKEY SMOOTHIE. Omg... if you want cacao/ chocolate goodness with peanut butter and banana...it is UNREAL how delicious this batido is. Like wowwww.

The owner Paul is chill and friendly and def cares so much about the customer experience. The people who work here are cool and nice. They bring your drinks up to you when you’re too busy working or talking upstairs on their porch. They have always gotten my order right and been helpful when asking about details on drinks and food. There has always been someone who spoke English working when I was there and that was really helpful.

Speaking of the upstairs porch there is a view of the beach and there are some outlets to plug in. The wifi is fast esp for this area and I can upload 2-3 GB videos in under an hour easily. The airflow is nice up here and the shade. It’s a perfect spot for remotely working or hanging out as there is also a couch.

Vegan friendly options included Smoothies, lattes, hash browns, toast with Jam, chocolate banana muffins, fruit bowl, chocolate bars and pancakes.

Overall this is in my top 5 restaurants in Puerto Viejo.

Never had mocha like this
Feb 2021
This is the real thing. Very potent chocolate, not very sweet (Ray added the cane sugar that was available, but I don't like things very sweet so I was happy with it as it came. Just scrumptious. Very nice people. Right across the road from the beach, nice setting. They offer chocolate tours, we went and enjoyed it so much. Lots of samples. I have overdosed on chocolate. Going back tomorrow for more.

Take the chocolate tour!
Jan 2021 • Friends
What an amazing coffee and chocolate this morning. The chocolate is so amazing that a lot of sugar is not required. I also went on the two hour chocolate tour. This is an interesting tour that will teach you so much about chocolate. And you may never go back to eating the highly processed junk that everyone sells.

A brownie to check out.
Jan 2021
I have been to Caribeans several times during my stay in Puerto Viejo.
The chocolate shots and the brownie are to die for.
Nice environment. Good vibe. Pleasant place to hang out.
Service is generally good, but inconsistent. Some staff members can be obnoxious and sarcastic sometimes.
