Let me preface this by saying I've never been much of the earthy type...with that being said OM was an AMAZING place to ease into that laid back, backpacker vibe. Yes there are mosquito nets over the bed and yes the shower is outside (surrounded by metal for privacy of course) and yes there is a bar next door but that truly adds to the experience. If you're looking for a place to get a little closer to nature and step out of your resort/hotel comfort zone this is a great place to do it! The facilities were clean and while I felt like I was sleeping in the jungle I never felt overexposed and there were actually ALOT fewer bugs than I expected. Another added bonus is that since alot of the other people staying there were surfers, folks were in bed pretty early and it was generally quiet by 10pm or earlier. The cafe downstairs had some of the best chocolate, and the walk to town (Puerto Viejo) was pretty quick and painless with plenty of shops, restaurants, and friendly people. The beach is steps away and was surprisingly peaceful..no loud obnoxious people or music or naked folks but a great place to sun, swim or surf. As advertised this is not a resort or hotel so you shouldn't expect those types of accommodations or amenities but it is a great place and made my first few days as a first time solo traveler really comfortable and enjoyable. OM was without a doubt one of the main reasons I didn't wanna leave Puerto Viejo.

I stayed at the hostel for one night and also attended yoga classes for a week at Om. I have been practising yoga for a long time and the classes I took here were some of the best I have ever taken. The instructors are all extremely approachable, knowledgeable and lead students through a beautiful, kind and light-hearted practice that fits perfectly with the gorgeous setting. Imagine morning yoga to views of the jungle and ocean, fresh salty breeze and hummingbirds and butterflies flying by - heaven!
The hostal dorm is basic, but that is to be expected given the jungle setting. Hot showers, towels and water to drink are all provided. I believe the man living in the home next to the hostal is the landlord, and, contrary to the last review, he is a lovely man and not at all creepy - though perhaps shy and not too interested in constant chat with tourists (and why should he be?).
If you are visiting Puerto Viejo and want to enjoy some brilliant yoga, do not go past OM!

I was looking for somewhere in the world that I could do yoga for a week, sunbathe on a beach, chill yet drink beer and not be vegan too! Not many places actually fall into that camp and so I found (via TripAdvisor) OM, and came to consider Puerto Viejo and Costa Rica. I then mulled whether to book at Manu (next door up a track road) but booked OM on the strength of the reviews of the yoga and Kristin.
I am so glad I did, I really had the loveliest of weeks, and it was exactly what I was looking for.
Yoga - classes at 8.30am and 4.30pm, 75 mins per class; pay per class or buy a package of 5/10, plus a community donation-based session once a week. Kristin teaches, and has other regular teachers who may be supplementing travel, but all extremely good and lovely. For me, wanting to relax, it was so good being able to do yoga every day, but without it being a set (and puritanical!) retreat. At this time of year (September) it's worth knowing the pm class ends when it's dark so if you're staying elsewhere, come on your bike to cycle back in the dark safely.
Treatments - I had reiki, for the first time. I was amazed, without going into details, Kristin identified areas of my body which indeed suffer from previous injuries, and chakra energies / emotions which I have been recently been dealing with. She let me know I may experience some vivid dreams afterwards, and indeed I did (when I usually can't remember dreams ever!). I don't know much about reiki, but I am convinced Kristin has very special skills and healing hands. If I could, I would visit her regularly.
Accommodation - OM is not so much a hostel - there's a couple of rooms - the focus is more the yoga, treatments & surf with Kristin's husband Alex. But you can stay there anyway, just don't expect a lot of other backpackers :) But like any hostel, there's a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, wifi and the "lounge" facilities are the Carribeans coffee/chocolate cafe over which the yoga platform is, looking out to the ocean. And if you're looking for somewhere really peaceful and relaxing, OM is fantastic.
Location is about a mile out of the centre of Puerto Viejo - close enough for easy access, far enough to be lovely and quiet and woken by howler monkeys in the jungle behind at dawn, and a much nicer beach. Playa Cocles itself is quite spread out, so e.g. 'Jaguar' rehabilitation centre was about 30 mins walk/15 mins bike, supermarket/town 20 mins walk/10 mins bike, beach 1 minute :) OM is at the Puerto Viejo end of Playa Cocles. Manzanillo is about an hours pootle on a bike - or the bus stops where ever you flag it on the main road.
It does get dark early though (5ish in September) and it's not entirely safe to walk alone in the dark to town, so be wise and borrow a bike (deposit required) and only take with you what you absolutely need. Or, as I did on occasion, walk into Puerto Viejo by sunset for bars/restos and taxi back (2000 CRC / $4). There's a couple of restos down the road but they do close early if no one much around (low season especially) and Tasty Waves surf bar/food next door which closes Wednesdays but has MASSIVE party nights Tuesday nights that people come from all around to attend. Kristin offered me earplugs - and it was indeed very noisy all night, it didn't bother me too much but might someone more sensitive to noise.
The bus will stop outside if you want one for Manzanillo / PV / Limon for onward travel e.g. Tortuguero / San Jose; and tour companies will pick you up outside e.g. hike and snorkel in Cahuita - if they don't know OM / Carribeans, they'll know Tasty Waves next door. Also worth doing the Caribbean's Chocolate forest tour next door - allow 3 hours - not just to see and learn, but they're also doing a lot to support the local community and chocolate farmers and industry all around. And Caribbeans Chai ice cream has to be one of the most amazing things ever!!!
All in, I had the loveliest week doing excellent yoga, on the beach, biking around, eating and drinking locally and in PV, really wouldn;t have asked for a more perfect chilled and great value break and I would love to go back sometime :)

I had read many many positive reviews about this place and its yoga, so I decided to book a few nights at this hostel. After staying there, I can now officially say that this hostel is probably one of the worst lodgings I've ever stayed at my twenty something years of existing.
Pro side: This place is located under a reputable chocolate place which I unfortunately, did not get the chance to try. It also offers yoga classes which, according to many reviews, are quite good, so if you enjoy yoga, you should try to take a class here.
But on the lodging side? Oh no, we definitely gotz a problem here. All I can is that this type of lodging is NOT for everybody and I'll explain why. The framework and structure of the hostel is wooden and very "organic', so showers, and bathrooms, are literally outside, covered by flimsy metallic walls that barely close. Hot warm showers are a gamble. It depends on how the weather is feeling that day. I basically got an icy cold shower, and there are no hooks to hang your clothing. It was fantastic, I might as well be showering in the jungle. At least it's free.
The bathroom sink. It's outside, exposed, and there is no mirror. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't particularly enjoy brushing my teeth in my PJs while dogs and cats and people walk behind me. If you want a mirror, you have to go to the next door kitchen, which by the way, felt like it hadn't been cleaned in quite some time.
The rooms in itself are small but cute. They are all painted, wooden, and the beds were pretty comfortable with bug netting. Unfortunately it gets super hot at night, and they provide with a mega-sized fan that I swear to god sounds like those coming from textile factories. If you're a light sleeper, gooood luck.
And my favorite part is the karaoke bar next door. Karaoke went out literally until 2 AM in the morning (imagine listening to people drunkenly sing off-key for hours.. fancy that?). Like I said, the hostel does not really have outer walls, so you're basically listening to a live open concert. I had already brought earphones with me, and even they couldn't save me from that guy's voice.
To sum it up, this hostel, like I said, may cater to some (who enjoy the nature-like, natural water/organic feel), but it definitely did not work for me. If you're the type of traveler who prefers quiet hostels, with comfortable surroundings and regular bathrooms facilities (that can be found indoors with mirrors, hooks, and hot water), then I suggest you check out other reputable hostels like Pagalu instead.

We gracefully assisted in setting you up with alternative accommodation and transportation plus gave you back the remainder of your non-refundable deposit (minus your one night stay). The reason why we gladly helped you move elsewhere was that it was obvious from the moment you arrived that a backpackers hostel is not the type of accommodation you were looking for or expecting. All of our promotional material describes us as a backpackers hostel best fit for low-key yogis. We are first and foremost a community yoga studio. That is our primary purpose and we do not hide this fact. However, we also do not promote ourselves as a retreat center as that is very different than a budget hostel. It's unfortunate that your expectations were not to find and arrive at a budget, low key hostel.
In the shower there are hooks - it is the beautiful piece of driftwood that is there. We pride ourselves on being connected to nature here and, yes, on being more of an "organic" type of stay.
As far as the bar next door; you can believe me when I say we are not that excited that they moved in. It has been quite intrusive to what we try to do and create as a business and health center. However, relocating a business after years and years of investment is not that easy just because of who moves in next door. Sometimes you just have to do the best you can with what you have in any given moment. That is all that we can do...which is why we provide earplugs at reception on those nights. We'll keep doing the absolute best that we can with what we have.
Thanks for your feedback.

The yoga here is wonderful- but we were supposed that the owner was not at all flexible in travelers buying a pass to split. My husband and I stayed in punta Uva and during the honeymoon did not know how many classes we would be able to travel to with other activities we wanted to do. We wanted to buy a 5 class pass and split it, but were refused. Even at my yoga studio in Charlotte they let us do this and you'd think with all the tourists and other things people want to do in Costa Rica, that they would be more "go with the flow"- it is a yoga studio, after all!

Dear Sir or Madam; We apologize if our policy made you uncomfortable. It is not personal and is a standard practice at most yoga studios to sell packages for personal use only. Seems like your home studio probably makes an exception for you and your husband! That's great! One of the bonuses of practicing within your local yoga community. Our class package policies are clearly posted with all of our class prices on both the bulletin board by the entrace to the studio as well as upstairs in the studio. Being flexible is not the same as lacking boundaries and unfortunately in running a business we have to constantly dance the line between flexibility, compassion and also boundaries. Indeed, this is the first time in 6 years we have heard this complaint, or that anyone was surprised with the standard policy. We honor your feedback and although we will not be changing the class package policy, we do sincerely apologize that you were put off by it or if you found our drop-in rate of $10/class inaccessible during your honeymoon. The good news is; it seems you received a high quality practice. For a difference of $1 per class, I hope it was worth it to receive a wonderful yoga class. We appreciate your patronage and your feedback!

I love this place! They have the best pineapple smoothies and iced coffees. Their barristas and owner are amazingly friendly and helpful. The entire place just makes you want to relax, be non judgmental and stress free! The food was so good too...try the sticky monkey. They have a chilled room where you can taste all their amazing chocolates (we bought a bunch to take home). My six year old was in heaven in that room.

I did not stay at om but wanted to take one of the yoga classes offered daily. Originally I wanted to take the 8:30 but got there too late so I opted for the 4:30 and was happy I did! It was a nice way to wind down the day as the sun was setting. From their platform you can see the jungle and the ocean! It was a little distracting as the road was right there and you could everyone walking by, but I was able to focus on the ocean and have a great experience! The instructor was great, super open, and very helpful. Even if you don't stay here be sure to stop by for one of the classes!

The cafe has great food and the yoga classes are fantastic. Visit but do not stay here. The dorms were filthy hadn't been cleaned in days. There are random boxes with junk on the shelves and the bathroom stinks. The privates rooms are $40 dark and tiny. Stay at Pagalu a great hostel or Jarcaruda for private rooms.

Hi there; Thank you very much for taking the time to review. The "random boxes" provided in the dormitory and private rooms are safes or lock boxes for personal belongings as a safety measure although we have never had security issues on site. Also I would like to personally apologise if the cleaning was not up to your standard. We have someone on cleaning duty 7 days a week so I will be sure to be communicating with the entire staff about this review immediately. The random junk on the shelves very likely belonged to other guests of the dorm as there are shelves provided for each of the beds. Again, I apologise if this is not what you are accustomed to experiencing in a youth hostel dormitory setting. We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the yoga classes at the least.

I stayed at OM for three nights in a 'private room'. My room had one window that did not have a screen on it. The only way to prevent critters from wandering in from the roof just outside the window was to keep the shutters closed tight. No ventilation. The website advertises community bikes are available. Well, they were, but they're mostly not fit to ride. I was given a bike that was in such bad shape that the chain fell off 5 times during a 5 kilometer ride. Not safe. The host also charged me a $50 deposit to use the bike. There also seemed to be some unspoken tussle with the filtered water. The website offers filtered water for drinking, which is of paramount importance at the Costa Rica coast, but I was banned from using the water source in the kitchen (without explanation) and the owner put a sign on the water in the new location during my stay that asked for a donation to pay for refilling the water. How very odd. I also noticed this creepy old man who did not respond when greeted... he seemed to live in a little house on the property and watch the comings and goings of all who came and went from the sleeping quarters and kitchen. One positive note, all the reviews I read about this place before I went say it is clean and tidy, and that is true. However, the feeling there was creepy and spooky and I wouldn't want anyone I know, particularly any young women, to stay there.

It is unfortunate you felt our community center to have a scary feel - indeed since the day of our opening you are the first client to ever voice this opinion. Unfortunately, there is not a lot we can do about the "vibe" aside from the constant yoga, energy work, cleansing and daily cleanings that we already engage in.
The elderly gentleman that is on the property is the owner of the entire land - unfortunately after a long life in a tourist town he does not seem too interested in socialising much with guests of the hostel and the tourists that come in and out. Again, this is something outside of our control and we certainly apologise if his presence made you uncomfortable.
The filtered water is provided free for all guests of OM. The only spot for water refills that has a donation bin is the one located upstairs in the yoga studio and is for the community studio public who chooses to refill their entire bottle rather than purchase it in a store. We do not charge, but ask for a heartfelt (and optional) donation due to the fact that providing this service (not one that most hostels here provide) is very costly. In peak season we go through as many as 130 liters of water/week. Our hope is that the community will be mindful of their environmental impact before using water wastefully. I am entirely uncertain of who banned you from using the purified water. This would be an extreme oddity as the entire reason the purified water is in the shared kitchen is for hostel guests to use it. Perhaps a language barrier has occurred in some form because I can't think of any instance where a guest would ever be banned from using the water.
Lastly, the free use of bicycles is another perk that no other hostel in the area provides. They are not pretty and they are not new, but with a deposit (which is returned to the client upon check-out) they are FREE for use. We always direct clients who prefer to have a shiny, new bicycle to a nearby rental place which charges $5 to $7 USD daily for bicycle rental. The free bicycle use is an added bonus and not an obligation for the guests of the hostel. We're sorry you were not satisfied with this offering.
