I was not impress with this beach at all. Maybe is the time of the year, but all I saw were rocks and green corals. Not usable beach at all. Pretty sad, because apparently this was a nice beach at one time.

The beach is pretty but please don't swim here. I got carried away by the current and was about to smash into the rocks on the left side. Luckily a beach boy helped me get out of the water. I just read that an American tourist drowned there recently. Wade into the water but don't swim.

Nice beach, a few restaurants along the the beach, great public parking area, not that great to swim, left area of the beach is nice with a lot of coconut trees that protect you fro the sun.

When our cruise ship docked in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and we had seen pictures of this beautiful beach. We found that it was a $10 per person each way, cab ride from the cruise pier. We had to pay for both ways and our cab driver set a pickup time with us. It was a Sunday so this free beach was probably more crowded than normal. There were several groups of people from our ship along with some performers from the theater. The beach had palm trees for some shade and a nearby restaurant and bar for food and drink. The surf is a little rough but fun, reminding me of New Jersey. It was an inexpensive way to see the area without booking an excursion.

Playa Bonita is a nice beach about 4 kms from Puerto Limon town. It's a short ride and taxi drivers ask $10 one way for the trip. You can probably get it for less. Alternatively, there are public buses that head out there fairly frequently from downtown Puerto Limon. The beach is okay but certainly not the best that the Caribbean has to offer, There are two restaurants on the beach that serve drinks and decent meals for a reasonable price. If you're on a cruise and don't want any of the over-priced excursions, then this is a reasonable option for you. A guy on t/he beach will also rent you chairs.

Six of us took a cab here for $5 a piece from the cruise port terminal. We were the first ones to arrive. A man came out and offered us beach lounges for $25. We got him to $20 for three and an umbrella. The sand is nice and clean. The water is quite wavy. Would have been perfect if we had boogie boards. The waves reminded me of being in the Pacific water off of California.
We had snorkel gear and swam around with it but saw not one fish. So, we enjoyed the day riding the waves and floating. No one bothered us on the beach trying to sell anything. There are two bar/restaurants right there. We were able to get a bucket of beer for a reasonable price. Nice way to spend the day in the water surrounded by rain forest.
There were feet showers by the restaurant we were able to use before hailing a cab.
We would visit here again.

We went to this beach with Freedom from Javac Tours -- because it is close to the Limon cruise port. The entire beach is only about 100 meters wide, and maybe half of that has access to the water. The rest is coral. There is a shallow area near the shore that is good for small children and just soaking yourself. The water stays shallow up to 50 yards from shore, but the waves are fairly strong and good for boogie boards. There are two bars / restaurants with bathrooms. There are no showers. The beach itself is OK, not great. There are some shaded areas.

A bad ripetide/current prevents swimming here and the food at the restaurant is awful. There is nothing to see snorkeling either. Would not recommend this area to visitors.

We visited Playa Bonita Beach on March 7, 2015. We were the only "out of owners" present and saw less than 5 other people on the beach. There was a lady present selling various things to drink and another man renting umbrellas. The waves were really rolling in, at least 3-4 feet in height. We choose to not enter the water as it seemed fairly unsafe due to the crashing waves. Our guide told us that this was not a good time of year to visit this particular beach. The beach seemed clean and the area as a whole was quite beautiful. There was a restaurant just above the beach and a small grocery there as well.

Is it safe to take a cab from the cruise port to this beach and back? Are there umbrellas and chairs to rent? Thanks,

We are going on a cruise in June and will be in Limon. It appears that this is a good beach to go to. Do you know if it is safe to take a taxi from the cruise port to this beach and approximately how much it costs? Thanks,

Lulu1984,
It is hard to answer as we took the "long way" around and had several experiences before arriving at the beach. Our best guess is from 30-45 minutes by taxi. I'm sorry I could not be more specific.
