I'm getting old and reminiscing about my Great experiences. I found an old tee shirt this morning that brought back some wonderful memories It said, "I survived The Reventazon River in Costa Rica.
I booked this white water excursion at our hotel in San Jose, (The Gran Hotel) for my daughter, her husband and my OLD self. My daughter is a "Thrill Nut" but me and son-in-law are a little more, low key. No matter, we do what she wants.
We were picked up early in the morning in a comfortable bus with about twelve or more excited YOUNG people. We are taken down out of the mountains into a gorgeous river valley. There we were met by three or four float guides,(young and athletic looking) and two rubber rafts. We were given a ten minute talk about what to expect and given helmets and life vest. We were divided into two boat groups and told that "the first person that was thrown out of his raft, had to buy the beer for everybody" Sounds like fun, RIGHT? I was forty years older than anyone else in the boats, but I wasn't worried about buying the beer, I just wanted to survive. We pushed off and it was not two minutes into the trip when my son-in-law was thrown out of the raft. We were told that John would buy the first round and the boat that came in last had to buy the second round of beer. PEOPLE, I can't tell you how much fun that trip was. I dug my bare feet so damn deep into the side of that raft that they had to pry me loose at the end of the float.
Please don't die before you go to Costa Rica, they had more than just white water rafting.

Had a wonderful time white water rafting on the Reventazon River in Costa Rica! The tour was managed efficiently and prefessionally. Our guide, Estevan Padilla, was fun and enthusiasc - you could tell HE was enjoying himself as much as we were enjoying it! Not as many rapids as we might have liked, but it was a good mix, and worked well for even inexperienced white water rafters. There was plenty to see from the river, so we got to enjoy the beautiful scenery when we weren't on rapids. We got back to the base location mid-afternoon, and had lunch. We were pretty hungry by then, and the food was DELICIOUS! It was a fun excursion, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys white water rafting.

This was a great excursion. Exploradores Outdoors was the tour provider - via Princess Cruises shore excursions. Tour guides were excellent - very friendly and knowledgeable. The river was fun! Decent rapids but nothing crazy, don’t worry. Saw a couple sloths along the way... we were actually able to pull over to get out of the raft for a closer look. Buffet lunch afterwards was a nice touch. Highly recommend. Thanks guys!

Celebrity Cruises offered whitewater rafting so thought I would check it out. Good decision. The actual rafting was a pleasant surprise , smaller rafts made it seem a lot rougher. Tour operator was excellent and the guide was a young local kid who knew his stuff. Only downside to this trip was that the bus tour guide talked about banana's for an hour there and then pineapples for the 2 hour drive back. Took longer coming back due to road construction.

Explorodores outdoors lie to us and told us we were going on the Pacuare. We found this river boring with mosly class 1 and 2. We understand that the water levels can be high on the Pacuare but we would not have done the Reventazon for excitment.

I have experienced Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, implicit White Warer Rafting, Tortuguero Canal, Cedar Ranch and Brisas de la Jungla zip lines and a trip to Puerto Viejo animal rescue reserve and Banana Plantation whilst sailing into Puerto Limon with a cruise ship.
Given that I was a crew member organizing tours for and with other crew members, time keeping is paramount; we have an average of 6 hours for our exploring and exciting adventures.
One day I met Steven, aka Esteban Herrera, the partner of a small tours business . Steven Tours , Puerto Limón Costa Rica. Teléfono: 0506 85302417, when just needing a taxi. He was very kind and gave us a ride to Playa Bonita, also arranging a ride back to the ship for me and my friends. Over this one trip we tight the knot of a lasting friendship and more so, an alliance. We needed someone reliable, punctual and safe to take us on tours and bring us back to the ship in a timely manner, and Steven proved to be the wright person!
Steven has never failed us. We were arranging trips over email or telephone 10 days or more before our ship would call into Puerto Limon, he would give us the best fares and take care of us for as long as we could afford being adventurous before getting back to work.
To conclude, if you ever have a short or long time into Puerto Limon and want to make the most of it, Steven (Esteban Herrera) is your most reliable person to contact. We always felt save and taken care of when making arrangements with him and his partners.
Enjoy Costa Rica and Puerto Limon!

I was reading that the Reventazon River has fallen on hard times so maybe not so good to begin my white water rafting experience there. Is this true? I would like a river with class II-III rapids only, so anyone know of a good river as a day trip from San Jose if this one is more like a class I?
