One of the big things on my list while in Costa Rica was to finally learn to surf. It is something that has been on my "One Day" list and finally was able to make it to the did it list... and the will do again list. (which I thank Doug for) I booked a 2 hour lesson with Doug one day hoping to finally learn how to surf. He spent time with me first to get to learn my level of knowledge of surfing and how strong of a swimmer I was. He let me know he is training in safety and is an Ex Fireman. I felt safe and secure knowing he would make sure I'd be ok. When asked if I knew how to surf all I could respond is by saying, "Ive seen Point Break?". We laughed and then continued with the lesson. Throughout the lesson, from the time out of the water to the time in he was patient, understanding friendly and guided honestly and with positive encouragement. Plus he was just fun to talk to and spend time with. Learning to surf for the first time is challenging but made the experience very fun. He really is a great teacher and not just teaching but passing on knowledge, love and excitement for surfing. He was by me the whole time ensuring I was safe and guided me through the learning process. We ended the first day after about an hour. The waves were very big that day and breaking close to shore. He understood how this greatly raised the degree of difficulty in learning and offered we finish our lesson the next day. When we convened the next day we reviewed what i ;learned and he gave me great feedback and insight into how I could be more successful with actually getting up and properly riding a wave. He taught me to let go, and soon after I caught my first wave, and second and so on. During this second day we talked about surfing, how to read waves, how to feel the waves and he truly opened the door for me into a larger world. I left being able to surf and catch my own wave. I am so excited to go surfing again and would highly recommend Doug to anyone. After my lessons I demanded my friends go no further and spend time with Doug as he truly is an Obi Wan Kenobe of Surfing. I hope to go back to Tamarindo in the next year and continue with more lessons from him and his team.
