Edgar is an outstanding surf instructor. His personal attention and genuine caring made me feel completely at ease in the water. He has many years of surf coaching experience and he is fantastic with all ages. He knows the beaches in Tamarindo very well and is excellent at reading the waves and helping his students like me with their timing. I highly recommend Edgar and know others will have a great experience when they work with him.

I contacted Edgar to make sure he was around and available before finalizing our trip. So yes, before booking we made sure he was available because there is no other teacher my kids want to surf with in Tamarindo. Edgar is a positively chill teacher who will give you pointers along the way and celebrate all your accomplishments. My kids are now 7 & 9 and have a deep love of surfing thanks to Edgar sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport with them. Want to have an awesome time learning to surf while being safe in the water, Edgar is the guy. No surprise he has all excellent reviews. We look forward to heading back to Tamarindo and no doubt will check with Edgar before booking our trip to make sure he is available.

He has a knack for teaching and imparting the knowledge of the sport. They get better and better every year. We highly recommend Edgar; he's passionate about his job. I believe he has perfect reviews? That speaks volumes...

I have been surfing for 10 years, and had many instructors. A few have been excellent. Edgar is the best of them all and it’s not close - he exists in his own tier. Edgar transformed my surfing trip from what would have been a good one into an unforgettable, once of a lifetime, epic experience. I do not believe one can possibly teach surfing any better than Edgar. In my opinion, he epitomizes the perfect coach not just for surfing, but for any sport. Let’s start with the name of his company, “Learn and Improve”. The name he has chosen (among many other aspects) sets him apart from the other surf organizations. His commitment to make you a better surfer is readily apparent from this title, just for starters. Edgar was 100% focused on my experience in the ocean each lesson; He is completely dedicated to his student. For our second day, the tides were best at 6am – he was at my door ready to hit the water at 530 in the morning. At the beginning, Edgar shared his instructional philosophy, the fundamentals of surfing, and how he would be teaching me, including the necessary phrasing he would use in the moment. For example, there would be things he would say while I was paddling for a wave, or when it was crucial to paddle quickly outside when a big set was on the way. Surfing is very detailed and corrections need to be made in a split-second. There is not time for drawn out explanations. His phrasing would prove to be invaluable, enabling me to make the needed adjustments to maximize each ride, starting with wave selection, and then onto specific instructions as I paddled, popped-up and rode each wave. If I wiped out, or even when I could have done something differently on a successful ride, he would provide helpful feedback in a constructive, positive, and encouraging manner. Every time I made the correction, I experienced an improvement with the next wave. I remember at the very beginning as he was sharing his philosophy, Edgar said he was meticulous, and indeed this is how he was. His degree of focus and attention to detail are also aspects that set him apart from other instructors I have experienced. Edgar is always positive, and he was never negative, not once. When I was thrilled with a ride, (which by the way happened over and over and over again) there he was on the outside cheering my performance. If I was not able to catch a wave, he was always encouraging, praising my efforts. I have had instructors not be able to provide feedback on my pop-pop, take offs etc., based on not being able to see me from the outside once I take off. It didn’t matter how large the wave was; Edgar provided specific, spot-on feedback from a limited vantage point. In addition, his analysis and feedback not only encompassed the physical side of surfing, but also the mental aspects. For example, Edgar could see when I was paddling 95%, and pointed out the subtle hesitation that was standing in my way of catching the wave. As it turns out, this was one of the major things I needed to adjust in order to progress with my ability. Aside from his instruction, his knowledge of the area, and specifically, the ever-changing dynamics of all the breaks is extensive to say the least. The ocean changes by the second, and Edgar was keenly aware of the wind, waveform, current, and every other relevant aspect to the conditions at any given moment. He would say for example, that the waves were getting steeper, necessitating the choice of a higher line on the wave after takeoff. He pointed out at one point that the offshore wind was keeping the wave face open longer, making a decent ride out of what initially appeared to be a close out. Details like this I had not heard before, and they contributed to my rapid improvement. I was consistently riding the waves longer and more effectively based on his feedback, and I was making turns and learning maneuvers rather than simply going straight down the line. Aside from his coaching, Edgar is a wonderful human being. It was a pleasure to get to know him, and hear about his experiences. He is a kind, compassionate, humble, laid-back and completely non-judgmental person. There are only a few people you will meet that exude such a positive vibe and presence and he is one of these people. It’s even more rare when you meet someone and feel comfortable enough to discuss your personal problems within a day of meeting them LOL. This is the kind of person he is, and someone you want as a good friend. Every day when we were walking in town to the break, or traveling by car to another break, it seemed like there was a local resident saying hello to him every five minutes. He is clearly well known and well respected not only as a surf instructor, but for the great person he is. I’ll never forget some of the views I got surfing some of those waves. A crystal blue, shimmering wall of utter beauty as I raced down the line. I am planning on returning to Tamarindo as soon as I can to resume coaching with Edgar. For the first time, I will plan my surfing trip first around whether my surf instructor is available. If you want to have an absolute blast while at the same time improving your craft, contact Edgar at Learn Improve Surf Company.
