I have always wanted to try surfing and finally gave it a try, and I'm glad I did. The experience was the highlight of my trip. The instructors were very helpful and each of them spent time with you. I was with a large group, but the lesson was customized to each person. The cost of the lesson was also very reasonable. I will defiantly be back

My husband e-mailed Tamarindo Surf School regarding making reservations and they were very prompt to respond. They suggested we book online, which we did, and ended up saving $5 each. My husband was able to stand on his third try! I was a little scared and it took me many tries to actually stand up. Eventually I manage to ride a few waves all the way to shore, I was very proud of myself. The instructor was amazing; he was very encouraging and patient. He made the lessons very enjoyable and fun and I’m so glad we use them for our first surfing lessons. I strongly recommend using Tamarindo Surf School. The prices are just right and you’ll get amazing instructors!

My family of 5 took a surf lesson here last week. We booked the reservation in January with a credit card deposit. Upon arrival we were asked to pay for the lesson, told their credit card machine was broken and they could only accept cash. It being the end of our vacation we were short on cash and it being Holy Week, the banks were closed. We told the young man at the desk this and after giving a half-hearted attempt to use the credit card machine he said our instructor would accompany us to a bank machine to obtain cash. This was nerve-wracking as our bank card wasn't working reliably on the country's network but we had little choice. Thank goodness the machine worked this time and we were able to pay for our lesson. Our instructor, a young man named Fabian (not sure of spelling) was friendly and patient and worked hard to make sure we all got up on our board at least once. Two of our sons got up several times and really had a great experience. Unfortunately for me, my youngest son's board hit me above the eye after we both wiped out on one of the first waves and I was left with quite a shiner. This was not the instructor's fault but I share it because I want people to know that the waves here can be quite powerful compared to what we are used to on the east coast. The moral of this review is to be cautious, careful and bring cash.

We have never really surfed before and we took lessons for two days with the Tamarindo Surf School. My husband and our two sons went the first day with Joseph for a couple of hours in the afternoon, and he worked hard to help us catch waves. He took us to the far end of the beach where the waves were over the sand, and not the rocks, but they were still a little intimidating and the current strong. After a preliminary lesson on the beach, we were out on the water and he would tell us when to paddle and when to stand up. We actually managed to catch a few!

We went back the next day and I took a private with Luiz. He gave me tips every time I managed to get back out to him and helped me stand up and surf all the way back into the beach by the end of the lesson. He was really terrific!

The lessons were $50 per person for two hours, with board rental and a private instructor. It was well worth the price! Definitely the place to learn to surf!

There's no bathrooms (but there's a hotel nearby with restrooms), there's a hose with warm water, but no showers and no changing area, but these aren't really drawbacks in this chill surf town.

The Costa Rica Surf Institute (CRSI) works together with the Coastal Spanish Institute (CSI) where my family (wife and two teens) went for an immersion Spanish lesson in Tamarindo.
I surf since I was 13 and now that I have kids 15 and 13 years old, I REALLY wanted to give my kids the opportunity to experience surfing. The truth is that I tried to teach them myself and also sent them to surf camping in the past, but before this last experience at CRSI they never enjoyed the sport. CRSI had a very kind and careful way to teach, that engaged my kids in a magical way. They filmed the first classes and before going to the beach next day they showed the film from the previous day to the students and commented the mistakes. This is an awesome technic. They have lockers and clean restrooms for the students. I rent a board and even my wife decided to learn surf. We had warm up instructor before classes and yoga instructor after classes at no extra cost (big plus). We had a whole week of surfing after the Spanish classes. Boards are in very good shape and the instructors are super prepared and kind, but very efficient. My family actually learned how to surf and loved it!

Jared from Tamarindo Surf School is great!

Tamarindo Surf School is a great establishment - you can use all their equipment for free once you take surf lessons. The have storage for anything you bring.

Often if you take group lessons with you and 1 other person, it is just you two; very personal attention for a fraction of the price.

Pura vida!
