Colosal waste of time and money. There is nothing there except for white sand. You have to take everything that u want for the visit with you: food, drinks, beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, etc. No cell service. There aren’t any restrooms either, not even porta-potties. We had heard that we absolutely had to go there. Not worth it.

This beach is very nice ! It has the clearest and cleanest water of all the beaches I swam at on this part of the coast. It has some huge waves which are great fun to play in = if you are a confident strong swimmer. But please note I was warned by several locals that this beach has had several drownings over the years due to a strong rip-tide. It is easy 15 minute drive to from Playa Samara in the dry season with one small shallow river crossing. Or about an hour by bicycle along the dusty dirt road or better yet go via Playa Buena Vista beach.

I don't want to tell you about Barrigona, because, like others, I love it because it is secluded. It is my favorite beach in Costa Rica, but then, I'm not a fan of the heavily touristed northwest beaches in Guanacaste. You need to figure out how to get there. You need to have excellent clearance if driving a car. You need to be savvy enough not to get stranded there. Take lots of water. It is wise to travel light, as cars are often broken into. The gentle breeze there will convince you that you are not getting burned. I like to go when the tide is low to view the tide pools. I like to swim on the left side when facing the water. Nice, big waves. Watch out for undertow and don't swim too close to the rocks. Now, forget everything that you've read, and don't go to Barrigona!

I gave it the rating I gave it to ward off people from this secret slice of heaven. Sharks, jelly fish, razor barracudas, and other sea monsters lurk offshore. The riptide takes out a dozen people a day. Gangs of loud Americans roam the beach, throwing hundreds of plastic straws in the ocean. Entry fee is $150US. Stay away.

We heard about this beach, but with vague directions we didn't bother. We decided to drive to Nosara Beach, we tested the suspension of our vehicle beyond anything you would ever do to your own car. We realized the road went through a river, so we stopped, like frightened tourists. A small station wagon with two 20 something girls flew by us and straight through the river. We followed, we couldn't believe how bad the roads were. They turned left, we followed. Pow, Barrigona beach, in the middle of nowhere. The water was crystal clear, beautiful. Six of us sharing about 2 km of amazing remote beach. Schools of fish at your feet, crashing surf. Perfect perfect perfect

A gorgeous beach no doubt, and we may have just gone at the wrong time of year. Because of the size of the waves and the warning sign of the rip current, none of us went in the water other than by the rocks on the edge (we have 4 young children with us) because of the rainy season, the taxis couldn't make it all the way so we needed to hike in the last half mile. The beach was covered in trash and debris that had washed ashore and wasn't nearly as white as I had hoped. Saying that, there were a lot of really cool hermit crabs we enjoyed watching, and the sand was incredibly soft, it was like walking on pillows. I'm sure it is just because we went during the rainy season from what it looked like with the other photos!

One of the guides told us that Mel Gibson bought a property right near the beach, and blocked all the access; then, the Costa Rican government told him that he should unblock the access. Something to that effect. So, mostly out of spite for Mel Gibson, I took my wife there.

The GPS (Garmin) took us to a nicely built gate with a guard. The guard told us to use a nearby road. That road was one of the worst (with deep troughs), but, man, once we got to Barrigona Beach, it made sense why Mel Gibson would buy a property there, or why people would come up with a myth like that (and maintain it).

It's beautiful! Straight out of a movie. It reminded me of the beach in "Inception" where Leonardo Dicaprio's character wakes up...

Worth the drive.

Does not matter whether Mel Gibson really has a property there or not.

we get Barrigona by bicycle from our hostel and it has been a very nice ride. easy to find but not indicated. The beach is spectacular and not crowdy at all, with a nice shade among the palms. What a shiny beach!

This beach is amazing. White sand, turquoise water. Bring your cooler with food and cool beverages (no stores or restaurants there). Ask the locals in Samara about how to reach this beach (4x4 or ATV is a must). No more than 20 min from Samara town. If you love secluded and untouched beaches, Playa Barrigona is the one.
Visting this beach is a must.

This beach is more beautiful than Samara Beach. Palm trees, picnic area, vendors selling fresh fruit, and of course the beautiful sunset at 5:30pm do not miss.
This is about ten minutes from Samara Beach. You do not have to pay $10 each way for a taxi service, instead take the city bus to the beach.
