Took the tour to PaleVerde from Villas Playa Samara and had an excellent time. Only two of us booked for the day so had a driver and minivan to ourselves for a 2 hour drive to the boat. The driver was great and showed us a range of things on theway and was attentive throughout. The boat tour provided sightings of crocodiles, capuchin monkeys, iguanas and a range of birds. The lunch provided was superb and the pottery demonstration was brilliant with a lot of history of traditional pottery techniques thrown in. A great trip!!

We went on a Monkey Boat Tour on the Pacific side near the town of Quepas. I think that it was one of a number of monkey tours in the area. This one involved taking a boat down a stream with a driver and a tour guide.
The trip lasted 1 hour to 1 1/4 hours. It was lovely. Lush forest, birds and monkeys - wild and not very tamed. They required time to come to the boat for some banana. Not very much is fed to them to minimize dependence. This is a peaceful tour and well recommended. I can only recommend this tour . We stayed at the Costa Verde Hotel.

The Nature Group Tours, Mangrove Boat Tour and Birdwatching Tour were fun and well run. Our tour guide was Justin for both tours. He is a young, charismatic and very knowledgeable young man. Highly recommend!

In August four of us were at the Azura Resort in Guanacasta, Costa Rica. We scheduled 3 Monkey Tour tours for our 2nd and 3rd days through their agent at the resort.. The second day we had the Sea Life Tour in the morning. Mediocre at best. Part of the tour promised snorkeling and that didn't happen. Boat seating was really uncomfortable. That evening (6:30 PM) we had the Turtle Nesting Tour. This one was okay. However, two of our party developed walking problems and the guide made arrangements for them to return to the resort. When the other two returned to the resort the injured 2 said there was no way they could do the 100% Adrenaline Tour the next morning at 6:30 AM. Our only connection to the tour company was the resort agent and she was not available. We left her a message on WhatsApp that we could not make the tour. Apparently that didn't get through since someone from Monkey Tours knocked on our doors the next morning. We explained there were medical problems and we were not going on the tour. Later that morning we talked to the agent at the resort. She then told us there could be no refund since there was not a 24 hour notice. This was not pointed out to us at the time of booking. Since we booked the last tour about 20 hours before, no refund was available for that tour. We were locked in when we made the reservation. We are very disappointed that there was no consideration for unexpected medical issues arising after the booking. There seems to be no consideration for unexpected circumstances. I have emailed the customer service for Monkey Tours twice since returning. I have never received a response. There is no way we would EVER book a tour with this company again. Buyer beware.

I did an 8 day tour with Monkey Tours visiting all over Costa Rica and was having a blast till our group get to Villas Playa Samara a resort where Monkey Tours have a day tour desk. The activity I originally wanted to do Kayaking was unavailable due to tide, supposedly. Which was lie the tide was fine. Then was going to do ATV with a family on my tour only to be told no, he already booked it but then minutes later told me I could if I didn't mind riding with tour guide I said ok, minutes later again I was told I could not do it. Then the lies told at check in begain. The Monkey Tour manager tell lies and speaks to you very condescendingly. So I CAN NOT recommend the Resort or the Monkey Tour Desk there I had to leave because of the disrespectful behavior of both companies at that time, I couldn't trust them. But I can recommend the Jewel of Costa Rica 8 day tour. Our tour guide Marcello and Driver Eduardo where the absolute best.
My recommendation for company is make sure your your tour desk manager doesn't lie and speak to customers that way. You really put a horrible day memory on my trip. No one should be lied to and spoke to that way.

Booked an ATV ostensibly through Monkey Tours - it was really just the Azura hotel. They had one operative ATV in which I was offered the opportunity to drive a hotel employee around in while he directed me. But he didn’t know how to use things in the vehicle.
When I tried to call the international number from their website the link was incorrect and when I called the correct number it never connected.

Was supposed to go last May, obviously with Covid everything got canceled. This time spirit cancelled the flight…again. Tried to get in contact with monkey tours and there is absolutely no communication. I am the type that prints everything out, has everything in order and I try to leave nothing to chance. Everything about this trip is up to chance

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the 8-day tour of Costa Rica and would recommend the trip to people who are fairly active and easy-going and who want a quick taste of what Costa Rica has to offer. We had so much fun, found all of the destinations to be worthwhile, and felt the balance of the three days of activities and three days to go at our own pace was perfect for us. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and I felt the Monkey Tours staff did a great job of accommodating everyone. The long drives are a necessity but were broken up well with breaks and made bearable by the air-conditioned van. Our group size was perfect, and getting to know everyone was half the fun! If you're torn between the straight Costa Rica and CR/Nicaragua trip, I will say that most people from the latter we ran into did not seem to enjoy their trip as much as we did.

I will say we regret going when we did--things were quite dried up. Opt for the rainy season or at least the early part of the dry season. But definitely consider this tour.

Thanks to reading a zillion TripAdvisor reviews, I felt very prepared for each day of the trip. Knowing exactly what to expect makes it so much easier to enjoy each day and roll with the punches. So, instead of providing a detailed itinerary, which you can easily find on the tour website (or on many existing reviews) I'll summarize what I think you need to know to have the best time you can.

Day One
There isn't much to do at the airport Hilton, so don't rush to get an early arrival. But if you do find yourself arriving early like we did, you can catch a bus into the town to kill some time. There's not much there, but it's a change of scenery if you get antsy. It runs at ten after and 40 after the hour and picks up across the street from the hotel's main entrance. Just make sure to catch one back before seven (and make sure it's the one going to the airport according to the front banner). It costs one dollar each way per person. This was sort of scary, and the language barrier was an issue, but it was an adventure. Hotel has wifi, which worked well.

Day Two
You'll meet in the lobby around 7:30. Have breakfast before then and be sure you have your passports and pens handy to complete paperwork. Wear shorts and tanks and watershoes or sneakers.
Take a day pack with the following: a bathing suit and/or clothes you do not mind throwing away (because they will smell after tubing); watershoes; a plastic bag or two to put your wet stuff in; sunscreen; bug spray; a change of clothes; hat; sunglasses; waterproof camera if you have one; SNACKS; water bottle; small travel towel. You wear a helmet on and off through the day, so girls should be sure to have hair ties/headbands/Buffs.
Lunch is provided. You can buy beverages/beers. USD accepted everywhere.

Day Three
Wear long pants, walking shoes, tank or short-sleeved shirt. Pack for the day: a long-sleeve shirt; a water-resistant jacket with a hood; bug spray; cash or credit card if you want to do additional zip-lining offered and for lunch and souvenirs/coffee; camera; things to amuse you on the ride; snacks; Dramamine if you get car sick. You may want earplugs for the hotel if you're a light sleeper.

Day Four
Wear shorts and tanks with any kind of shoe. Pack hat, glasses, sunscreen, bug spray, camera (preferably with zoom to catch the monkeys!), snacks and water as well as something to amuse you on the ride. Again, take Dramamine in the morning if prone to car sickness. Lunch is provided; extra drinks for purchase. You will separate from guide, photographer, and driver this evening, so be ready with tips if doing so. Go into town for dinner this night and stop at the Super Mart for some beer, liquor and mixers, snacks, water, etc. or relax at the pool bar and order a pizza (closes at 10pm).

Days Five through Seven
Enjoy the beach and pool. Consider water shoes, as sand is hot and ocean is rocky. Pool bar closes at 10. You can get Frisbees and volleyballs from the front desk. Wifi is strongest by the pool and near the beach.

Go into town! $6 per way (per taxi, not per person); it takes them about 10-15 minutes to arrive once front desk calls for them. To get one back, just look for one or ask any shopkeeper, waiter, security person to call one for. Everyone is very friendly. You can walk into town, but I found it to be too hot and a pretty grimy stretch of beach. We ate at and loved Casa Esmeralda (dinner), Coco's (lunch, and our favorite), and Lo Q Hay (lunch with ocean view.)

For kayaking, consider lightweight long-sleeved shirt and/or toting along some sunscreen to reapply after snorkeling. Wear a hat. This is the only day I burned.

Take a plastic container that seals to keep any snacks so they don't draw bugs. Take a flashlight for walking around at night. Take air freshener, just in case. Our room has some plumbing smells happening. Save your toiletries (and a small bar of hand soap) for this last destination, as these are not supplied. Do not get the all-inclusive package--the food and atmosphere in town is too good to miss! We upgraded to an ocean villa and were happy with the decision, though we had nothing to compare it to. Do enjoy the spa package. My husband didn't want to do it, so another girl on the tour split it with me. Great massage, and my skin still feels baby smooth from the scrub more than two weeks ago. Wear a bit of bug spray if walking around at dusk.

Day Eight
Be sure you have been placed on the appropriate shuttle by checking the board in the lobby, and confirm the number of passengers. (2-hour drive to airport)
Before getting in line with your airline for ticketing, you will pay $29 per/person departure tax and receive paperwork to fill out. Then you move to ticketing and check-in.

For management...
If I had any recommendations for improvement they would be as follows:
-Have something planned for non-zip-liners to do at Monteverde. We ended up just waiting around for nearly an hour and a half (which I do not think is typical but was still quite boring.) We were offered the opportunity to be taken into town but sort of felt guilted into staying so they wouldn't have to make another trip down then back up the mountain.

-Make some of the lunches earlier. On days three and four, we had breakfast at 7:00 and lunch around 4:00. (The downside was then eating dinner at 9 or 10 at night.)

-Streamline the shuttle service from Playa Samara to the airport. We had, and saw other groups have, miscommunications regarding their times and the number of passengers, which caused delays.

-Better inform people, upon dropping them off at the airport, what to do. (That is, explain that we needed to go in to the left, pay a $30 per person departure tax, that there are separate lines for cash and credit...) We were just dropped off and left to figure things out for ourselves. Not a big deal, but a little forewarning is always nice.

-Make the picture CD a part of the Groupon package. By rolling it into the cost of the trip, every couple will be buying, allowing the cost to drop. Since it will have already been paid for, people will just view it as a perk or an extra, and we won't have to deal with the pressure to purchase.

-Put some pressure on the final hotel to up their game by threatening to drop your contract with them. It has great potential but is still falling short.

-Consider having Monkey Tours provide a shuttle in and out of town that runs at predictable times--especially during lunch and dinner times. Charge a low per-person price of 1 or 2 dollars to save your customers money (but also make some money too.)

Overall, I found this trip to be well-organized, well-worth what we spent, and a great opportunity to step outside our comfort-zone of luxury resorts and enjoy the culture and sites of Costa Rica! If you go into it prepared and with the right mentality, you will love it!

Wow what a detailed review, we really do appreciate taking the time to write such an extensive review. We are glad you enjoyed this trip with your husband. Costa Rica is dry almost half year and green the other, we have information on our website in regards to climate and information about the different weathers in Costa Rica as well as dates. We are glad you enjoyed the Ocean View Villa upgrade, they truly are the most renovated rooms in this hotel and with the amazing view you can never go wrong. The spa package is a must I would say after so much adventure you really want to get pampered. Remember Monkey Tours provides a 2 for 1 Spa packages and the Spa lady is amazing just like you describe her! In regards to the zipline in Monteverde, this is not included, you can opt in doing it as optional, but many people decide yo go explore the amazing town of Santa Marta to purchase souvenirs and experience talking to locals and getting to know the area. You will have already done zipline the day previous so many people opt for not doing it on Monteverde, in your case it seems like all the group decided to do it. It is always a pleasure for the driver and guide to pamper you into taking you down town and all. We are still working on the shuttles back, its hard sometimes when clients don’t indicate the right time of their flights whenever filling out the paperwork at the Hilton, so my recommendation is to have all flight information somewhere handy at all times. We are glad you mentioned about the airport, this is something that usually tourist explore once visiting another country, usually every country has their departure tax, and in this case we will keep mentioning the amount that is required, in regards to how the airport accommodates you to pay it and what line you should take, we have no knowledge of since it is constantly changed and we wouldn’t want to confuse our customers. There are times that it is very hard to maintain schedules specially when the groups are interested in the activities, and in order to not rush the groups sometimes the lunches are relatively late, but we always advise the clients and make stops in case snacks are required by some. The pictures are done by a separate company, which we won’t be including in the package. The deal has an amazing price and extras should be taken into account, plus the picture package has a very good rate considering the fact that the photographer is in disposition of taking pictures at all moments. We are working along with the last hotel, we hope everyone keeps on having a nice experience with them. Thank you for your time in this review. We really appreciate the time taken! Have a great day!

My boyfriend and I purchased Costa Rica Monkey Tours through Groupon and traveled in October of 2012. The tour guide and driver were great! The guide, Rodrigo, was very informative and helpful. We really enjoyed having him with us throughout the trip. And although the driver did not speak much English, he was very nice and tried to help us out as much as possible. They both were willing to listen to the group of people on the tour (we had 8, including ourselves) and add in small things to look at here and there.

The first day we went to Hacienda Guachipelin which was amazing. Completely action packed day that had you exhausted by the time you hit your pillow. We went horse back riding, ziplining, white water rafting, and then off to the hot springs that evening. So much fun! The hotel room was average, but was clean and the staff was friendly.

The next day we went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We went through a walking tour through the forest on these REALLY high up bridges. If you are scared of heights, do not go on this part of the tour. We also did a Sky Tram where we were able to go up to the top of the hill and look out onto both the Pacific and Caribbean sides of Costa Rica. What a wonderful sight. The second hotel was called Hotel El Establo. This hotel was super nice! A super nice shower and even had the option of a nice jacuzzi tub! We checked out the heated pool, which was awesome on a chilly night. The breakfast buffet in the morning was amazing as well.

Due to the weather, we were not able to go on the River Boat tour. This was extremely disappointing. We were not given an alternative option of our choosing either.

The final stop was in Playa Samara at the Samara Beach Hotel. We were supposed to stay in the Hotel Villas Playa Samara, but due to the earthquake were moved to this hotel. We learned of this before traveling to Costa Rica, so we decided to book a different hotel that was beachfront, but use the Samara Beach Hotel as our "in-town" room.

We had SUCH a horrible time dealing with the staff at Samara Beach Hotel. Up until this point, our trip was great (with the exception of not getting to go on the riverboat tour). This staff at the Samara Beach Hotel is the primary reason why I am giving this tour such a low rating.

One of the first nights in Playa Samara, we had decided to go to a local bar and have some drinks. We stayed out pretty late and had a few too many drinks, so we wanted to take a taxi back to our hotel that was a 20 minute walk down the beach. We went to the Samara Beach Hotel (in which we still had our key) and they refused to call us a taxi. We informed them that we were guests there and had paid for a room, but then they said that they didn't believe us - even though our name was on the bill and I showed my ID. Then, we asked for a manager, he said that since we weren't technically sleeping in the room that he was going to rent our room out to someone else if they would pay. I will tell you that we did leave some bags in the room during the days we were in town, so that is absolutely unacceptable. Then, we asked if the manager would call us a cab, he said that he would then walked out of the door of the hotel, went to the local bar, and never came back. We waited for an entire hour.

Then, the next day we went to complain about the manager, but only to learn that it is Alonso (apparently he is in charge of the Monkey Tours). He was extremely unpleasant to deal with and had absolutely no customer service skills. We tried to also get a Coffee Tour to replace the missed riverboat tour, but just got the runaround from the staff.

We also got to visit the Hotel Villas hotel site and realized that the Samara Beach Hotel was completely not comparable. This was extremely disappointing.

Overall, the first half of the trip was great - except be prepared for a lot of driving. More than you would expect. The second half of the trip was awful due to our experiences with the Costa Rica Monkey Tours staff.

Dear discoedit, Thank you for your stay with it in the Adventure Expedition package. We are sorry about the inconveniance with the last location's hotel which was closed due to the damadges of the earthquake and also the problems you encountered at the Samara Beach hotel and some of the staff. Unfortunately no hotel in the Samara area has similar facilities or is beach front like Villas Playa Samara and under the circumstances the Samara Beach hotel was our available option. We hope you can visit us again in the near future and enjoy more adventures and the Villas Playa Samara hotel which has now reopened its doors. Our best regards from the Costa Rica Monkey Tours team.
