La Leona Excursion: We had received a recommendation for Alejandro (Alex) Fernandez at 4x4 Trippin Offroad (Eco Tour) from past clients. We are so glad that we had taken the recommendation. Alex picked us up at 8am and we had a comfortable ride in his 4x4. He was very educational on the surrounding environment such as the animals, birds and the Rincon volcano environment. My teens loved his adventurous nature and he pushed us to try climbing vines, bouldering, crawl into caves and swim in deep pools. We are a family that are in decent physical fitness and are all strong swimmers so this excursion was right up our alley. Alex taught us about the plants and insects in the area and had a great time walking through the rivers and jumping off cliffs into falls. This was definitely memorable for our family. La Leona falls is stunning and we also explored a new fall, let’s call it “Le Reinita” and was challenging to get to but was worth it. We had a late Tico lunch and was another delicious meal with a mouth savouring Mora (Blackberry) milkshake. Our drive home was relaxing since we were pretty tired from our very physical excursion. Arenal/La Fortuna Excursion: Luckily, we had an excursion with Alejandro Fernandez at 4x4 Trippin Offroad (Eco Tour) where we went earlier to the La Leona safari excursion. He picked us up early at 7am and since Covid 19, there was no traffic on Highway 1. The drive was easy and he pointed out the sights along the way, windmill farms, valleys, vegetation and birds. He took the time to bring us to villages, and proudly explained his Tico culture. Arenal volcano was a bit cloudy but seems to be the normal at this time of the year. We then had a great time, to go to La Fortuna Falls, the admission price was a bit steep at $US18pp. We took about 500 stairs down to the base of the falls and had great pictures since hardly any people there. The foliage was breathtaking, and climbing the rocks/boulders around the water was a bit tricky. We walked along the river, and there was a lot of rainbow trout to see. We took our time taking the 500 stairs up, but was good for our exercise for the day. There was a butterfly farm and orchid garden that you can look at the top of the climb. We had a delicious lunch at Lava Lounge and we were the only people at the restaurant. Typically, this would be a popular lunch spot, but not this time. The owner also donates monies to rescue dogs. We entered Los Lagos Resort (1050 acres), which only charged $US17pp. It is a beautiful resort that allows access to the base of Arenal Volcano. We hiked up the trail to an abandoned church which allowed for picturesque photos. Then we had access to the 12 volcanic hot spring pools, which also had water slides. Normally, there would be 200-300 people there, however due to Covid there were only 15 people there and really quiet-we were the last people there before they closed the resort due to the pandemic. It was definitely a relaxing time and the jet beds and the massage falls were really therapeutic. The facilities were well maintained and the staff very helpful. We found this please very reasonably priced and perhaps we will try Tabacon hot springs next time. The resort also had a butterfly conservatory, frog area, crocodile and leaf-cutter ant farm. Our drive back to our hotel was relaxing and we also stopped off at a Soda and grabbed a snack. Alejandro was so informative and we had so much fun with him. Our teens learned so much from him.

Alex picked up my husband and I from our rented villa in Playa Ocotal and we visited the Rincon de la Vieja area, among other things. The highlight was going on an adventurous hike (lots of water crossings, some bouldering, some little caves etc.) to a stunning waterfall. There were no other people which was the other awesome part! After our hike and a traditional lunch, Alex drove us around the volcano area. Alex is a superb naturalist and outstanding guide- so knowledgeable about the area and spotting the local wildlife. You will be so glad you got off the beaten path and take an adventure with Alex!

This is my first reveiw ever and I can't say enough good things about this trip. We were in Papagayo with another couple for a little R & R when we read up on this outing. Each couple got our own 4 x 4 and away we went. To start, Alex loves what he does, you can see his grin from ear to ear as you power thru rivers and narrow corridors. He works with the passenger to get ahead of the vehicle teaching hand signals as a spotter climbing thru difficult terrain. At some point we came to a beautiful waterfall and basin where we and were able to jump in and enjoy a swim and snacks brought by Alex. After an hour or so (no rush at all) we jumped back in the rigs and did it all over again on the way back. Thank you very much Alex for great day in the jungle!

Totally enjoyed our 4-wheeling adventure with Alejandro. He arranged pick-up from our hotel with Jorge (sharp young man). Then he and Jorge led the way in their vehicle while we followed behind. We had an amazing tour of the back "roads" of Costa Rica. We splashed through rivers, climbed mud-caked embankments, tucked our arms in while squeezing through tight spots. We came back a bit mud splattered but that tells you this isn't a lazy Sunday afternoon drive. In addition, Alejandro gave us a bit of history of CR (super interesting!), pointed out incredible sights (Ficus trees, tarantula homes), and stopped to allow us to climb a waterfall and enjoy a swim. He provided fresh cool water and snacks to keep us going. I feel that Alejandro and Jorge enjoyed the ride as much as we did! Excellent men! Excellent experience!

We are a family of four, kids were 4 and 7. Alex took us in two separate vehicles. My husband had no problem driving because he has previous off road experience back home in our own vehicle. I was not so skilled. I know how to drive a stick but only in the city. I tried but had to stop when it got too difficult. Alex was very patient with me, never got annoyed and super calm when I almost tip the vehicle over. Haha... but at least I tried. He took us to the waterfall but the water was super low. Hasn’t rained for a long time. Alex made the best of it by taking us for a little walk and educated us on the local wildlife and plants. He then took us to a honey farm and gave us a snack of fried plantains with honey. We had to eat fast because the bees wanted some too. Before we parted he took us to a local small restaurant (soda) that a family runs out of their house. Everything was so delicious! Kids got to rest in the hammock while Alex chat with us about life in Costa Rica. He made it feel like we were just hanging out with friends. We road, we ate, and we laughed. Couldn’t have asked for a better day. Thanks Alex.
