What people are saying
Great design, but poorly maintained
Jul 2017
We recently played the Reserva Conchal Course at the Westin, and it is beautifully designed, as it weaves around the resort, offers some great views of the ocean, and presents a fun, challenging (but not too challenging) golf experience. While the course has a great design, it was not in great shape. There were brown patches everywhere, including the greens, which was surprising given we were there in the rainy season. There were a lot of weeds in the fairway, and much of the course was hard as a rock. We did not expect to play golf, so we ended up renting clubs -- Callaway Steelhead Irons and XR woods. They were in decent shape, and they offered discounts on kids' club rentals and green fees. The pro shop at the course is well stocked and maintained, and the people working there were nice and helpful. That said, the pro shop in the hotel's main lobby has a much better selection of shirts to choose from and is much bigger. Do be advised that they require collared shirts for all golfers. I say this as my son was wearing a non-collared Nike golf shirt from our country club, and my daughter was wearing a sleeveless golf shirt that is fine for any municipal or private club we visit. The pro shop refused to allow them on the course without collared shirts, which they were happy to sell us. We would have bought the kids shirts regardless, as they are avid golfers. A further note of caution -- the pro shop is EXTREMELY expensive. For example, a golf glove was $30, a green repair tool (which was unnecessary given how hard the greens were) was $25, and a dozen Bridgestone golf balls was over $70!!!! In other words, if you are visiting this area and think there is ANY chance you will play golf, I would advise packing a glove and balls at the very least. Again, the course is a bit pricey for what you get, but the design and layout are great. Again, like I mentioned in my review of the Westin resort, manage your expectations, as the course, in the shape we played it in, is an average, resort-styled course. I should have listened to a local citizen when I asked about golf -- he said, "Costa Rica offers golf, but it is not known for golf. There is far more to do while you are here."

Golf at the Westin , Reserva Conchal

amazing golf course, staff unmatched on service. Most times we felt we were the only ones on the course. Tons of wildlife to look at. Vegatation is amazing as well.
Lot of traps so bring your favorite sand club and perhaps a few xtra balls. you may not wish to spend time looking in some of the wildliffe habitat.

A Great Golf Course in a Beautiful Location!
Dec 2013 • Solo
I'm not sure if this course is still named the Garra de Leon Golf Course since Starwood obtained the property as it's now part of the Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal. However, no matter what it's currently called, it is a beautiful Robert Trent Jones II designed golf course. Anyone who enjoys golf will enjoy this course...not too hard, not too easy...just right. However, if you play twilight, in other words during the heat of the day when the cart paths are all nice and warm, you may have to ask a few very large iguanas to please move so you can get by on your golf cart. Several iguanas I saw were so big I thought I'd better call them "Sir" when I addressed them to move! And I'm NOT kidding! They always did move and gave me absolutely no trouble. I would think it would be very difficult to not enjoy a course like this in such a lovely setting. Like I said, if you like golf, you'll like this course.

great test of golf, was in excellent condition when I played it. not the cheapest but then again its not somewhere you would be playing everyday. I hired clubs from the pro shop and they were better than my own. the only golf course I have played where the spiders are bigger than the golf ball, quite a lot bigger!!!

Great course but overpriced. Also the refreshment cart was slow to arrive. They should provide free drinking water.

My Dad, husband and son played while we were there. The grounds were gorgeous and the boys had a blast! We took the wildlife tour, and it is a must even if you played the course. We saw amazing creatures on property! Sergio was a fantastic tour guide!

Great course all to yourself!

I played here twice on my recent trip to the Westin. It was beautifully maintained. Only saw a couple of other groups out on the course. Fun target golf that isn't impossible.

We don't play golf but is was beautiful to look at.

You could see the golf course from our room. Though we do not play golf it was a beautiful addition to the gourgeous setting of this restort. It was interesting to see a few players out on the course. It seemed that those that did use it enjoyed it.
