My boyfriend and I were staying in nearby Punta Islita, but found the beach there to be very volcanic and rugged with silt-filled water. We took about a 30 minute drive north (due to bad roads, not the distance) and found Puerto Carillo! The beach is beautiful! Long crescent beach - easy to walk the whole thing. Lighter sand (but still hot!), and clearer water. There are some good waves here if you like to boogie board. It wasn't too hard to get in past the break, but you need to be careful or you could get pummeled. I'd classify the water as warm.
Due to the lack of amenities, it was not overly crowded. Personally, I find that to be a good thing. No bathrooms. No restaurants. No shower/rinse facilities. There are a couple of vendors set up along the street selling coconut water, shaved ice, and a guy renting beach chairs/umbrellas. We paid $10 for two beach loungers and an umbrella and it was (necessary) heaven. There are some palms along the road that you can escape to if you don't feel like springing for man-made shade. Just be sure to bring everything else you need for a day at the beach along with you (towels, books, sunscreen, food, water, etc.) because you won't find it there!

Clean sand, gorgeous palm-lined beach with benches and tables. Some of the best snorkeling I've found in CR on the far left side along the rocks, where the boats sail from. Also was told there's good snorkeling along the far right side along the rocks. There's a great sunset viewing spot as you drive up the hill on the left side of the beach. Just to the right there's a parking area and two areas with benches and tables with a great view of the sunset.

The beach a Playa Carillo is absolutely amazing. It is 10 minutes south of Samara and when you come upon it as you drive down the road, you will say "Oh my". When you park and walk out onto the almost deserted beach, you are blown away by the beauty. The waves are big , but the undertow is not as bad as at Playa Samara. Could play there all day.

This here is a beautiful beach that is lots of fun. The water is just right, the sand is beautiful. Just being the beach are coconut trees whose shade you can use, just be sure to choose one without any coconuts actually on it, as one fell down near us, and you don't want one of those cracking open on your head...
There are also concrete chairs and tables all around. At the southern end if the long beach are done nice boulders and tide pools my 4 year old loved exploring.
Haven't been to many beaches here yet, but this is definitely better than the one in Samara.
Note there are no restaurants or stores right in the beach, just a couple of carts and a gal selling coconuts, so pack in what you need.

The Carillo beach is really beautiful. We stayed by Samara beach which had a lot of birds and hermit crabs but also a lot of people. Carillo is fairly empty as there are no restaurants along the beach, just people parked along the road. There are stone benches to sit at under palm trees to eat a packed lunch. At one end of the beach there is a spot where crocodiles are known to be seen - we got to see one but just the head of it. Definitely recommend - there are plenty of buses going from Samara, we walked one way but took the bus back.

The beach is beautiful and there were wild Scarlet Macaws eating almonds in the trees along the boulevard. Wonderful.

We went in low season, and on a few of the days, we were one of a handful of people on the beach...what a treat. Took our cooler, beach umbrella, and towels and lazed the days away. The water is nice, not too many waves when we were there. I like my ocean flat like a swimming pool and I felt comfortable enough to go in the water. The sand at this
beach is one of the nicest we have experienced in Costa Rica. There is plenty of free parking along the road, just be careful if you park in the shade, you are not under a coconut tree!!!!!
There are no restaurants or facilities out here, so come prepared. On the weekends, there are vendors that sell cold pipas and shaved ice.
Even though we stayed in Samara, I made my husband drive to Playa Carrillo everyday. If you are looking for crowds and bars you won't find it here. If you want a beautiful, quiet, secluded beach, you can't go wrong with Playa Carrillo.

Are there people fishing from the shores here? We are heading that way at the end of March/beginning of April and have kids that love to fish. Wondering what they are using for bait if so? Any info would be helpful.
