A very interesting visit
Feb 2020
we were taken on a guided tour of CATIE to look at the plants and trees as well as the bird life. It was a fascinating tour giving an insight into Costa Rican agriculture and plant life. The uses of certain fruits and trees were explained in detail - it felt that we could learn from the Costa Ricans to use natural remedies for a wide range of ailments. We saw a variety of birds and thoroughly enjoyed our visit

Excellent guide
Feb 2020
Our tour group visited and we first had an introduction to various plants, seeds and fruits we were likely to see then headed our with our guide. We saw lots of birds whilst walking round and later we drove a short distance on the coach, still within the large grounds and saw other birds and reptiles by the lake.

Great birding!

This is a great location for seeing several unusual birds, especially around the lake. It's also lovely to walk round.

Wonderful facility - A definite "Must See"
Mar 2019 • Couples
We are not experienced birdwatchers by any means, but our trip to C.A.T.I.E. was simply fantastic. The sheer numbers and types of birds (and some animals) that were there was incredible. Our Guide was knowledgeable and pointed out so much that we would have missed on our own. A definite "Must See"!

Too little time, so much to see!
Jan 2019 • Couples
We arrived too late and unprepared for the expansive terrain that can be viewed. We didn't book a guide, and walked through the gardens, spending a couple of hours just photographing flowers, plants, trees, birds and insects. So much to see!
Since closing time was nearing, we drove through most of rest of the area, stopping to view specific areas. A return trip is a must here!

Beautiful
Mar 2019 • Couples
The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the main house, would you can walk into and look around, has a very colonial feel. The hall is filled with a full array of multinational flags. The lake is adjectives in lily pads, and you will see a flock of white herons.

Great bird spotting excursion from Rancho Naturalista
Feb 2019 • Couples
We went with our guide Rene from Rancho Naturista for a morning of birding, The small lake, gardens, open areas, and agricultural research areas provided a wide variety of habitats (and birds) in a small area. It was a great spot for the big and showy--boat-billed heron, toucan, parrots, aracari, raptors, and a wide cast of shore birds. The grounds are pretty and tranquil (at least on a week day.)

Great for birders (perhaps less so without the tour)
Jan 2019 • Couples
I emailed C.A.T.I.E. about booking a tour about three weeks before we were going to be in Turrialba with no response. I wanted to do a tour based upon reviews offered here. We decided to go anyhow, right when they opened, despite not having booked a tour because we also wanted to photograph birds and had learned at Rancho Naturalista that this place was good. We were happy about the birding! However, just walking around the garden and grounds, without having another reason to be there, was not worth the price of admission.

Very informative tour on the science behind disease-resistant coffee, cocoa, and other important foods. They customized a tour just us, around our schedule, including an awesome bike tour of the grounds, and the Germplasm seed bank. Tourguides were super knowledgeable and explained everything!

You can do this without a guide but if you can get one it would be better
Oct 2018 • Couples
We went by ourselves without a guide and we enjoyed walking around but there are no signs. Just a basic map of where you can go. We have no idea what most of the plants were but we did see a basilisk, over 20 varieties of butterflies and at the lake we say at least 10 types of waterbirds including a kingfisher.
