Oh my word, it does not get any better than birding with Cristhian Ureña! He sees and hears everything. He is a bird whisperer. He is also a gifted biologist. He very probably knows 5,000 some bird songs, flight calls, alarm calls, fledgling calls, from every species in Costa Rica and in adjacent countries. He is such a thoughtful, calm, kind personality; it is no wonder the birds and other wildlife are thoroughly comfortable around him. He knows so much about not just the avian world, but the various Costa Rican topography, geological history, landscapes and so much about the flora and fauna that creates these intricate, complex and unique natural habitats. He realized that I was booking someone a bit late for a summer trip, and that it might be hard to find someone, and he literally drove across the country to bird two full days with me on the west coast, staying overnight near our resort so that we could we could be up at dawn and out birding. 110 new species in 7 days! I was sky high! And we saw sooo many gorgeous amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and others. He also happens to know many other guides in the area, and works flexibly with them, so he knows exactly who to recommend for particular types of outings. He recommended a second guide to me who contracts with his group, Santiago, who also had thorough knowledge of the habitat and species of the area. I cannot recommend Peregrinus Expeditions enough! I already want to go back and absorb more.

We recently made a 12-day birding trip through Costa Rica with our guide, Cristhian Ureña, who is clearly a true lover of nature and birds in particular.
Not only is he an exceptionally good guide with an incredible knowledge of birds and other animals, and an uncanny ability to spot birds and local fauna, but he is also a very nice guy!
No question was ever too much, all our special requests were fullfilled (if at all possible), and the whole tour was organized pretty well.
Cristhian's ability to mimick specific bird calls is really spectacular: on many occasions without his calls we would never have seen these rare and shy birds at all! Highly Recommended!
Thank you Cristhian, we hope we can do another trip with you some time in the future.

We did a 3-week tour with Christian and it was just amazing.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country with beautiful wildlife, but with a (private) guided tour the guide can make it or break it. And we were lucky enough to have Chris with us!
Chris is a good driver, great company but above all an excellent bird guide.
We have enjoyed every minute of our tour and look forward to come back to this beautiful country we already fell in love with in 2016.

Peregrinus was recommended and our group was not disappointed. Chris is an exceptional ornithologist and naturalist and local Costa Rican. Totally willing to share his knowledge and information about his country. He has an uncanny ability to spot birds and local fauna. He has good connections for other local guides, soda lunch stops with feeders and booked us into very nice accomodations. He set up an amazing trip for us. Thank you Chris

During 3 weeks tof February 2023 he DOF Travel group clicked some 440 species due to the skilled guidance of Chris, taking us to almost any prime birding sites of Costa Rica.

As a bird photographer, unfortunately the shooting oportunities - especially those in the vicinity of bird feeding, where one may get close to the birds -- were rather rare. So I "only" managed to leave CR with some 35.000 RAWs. A few of these, though, are of excellent quality.
As a first time CR experience this tour was perfect as a preparation for a more specialized bird photo tour.

Best regards

I did a one-day bird watching tour from San Jose with Cristhian while I was here for work. I was desperate to get out of the city and see some Costa Rican birds for hte first time in my life. He took me to an off-the-beaten track location where we saw 9 species of humming birds and several other beautiful and endemic species. He was extremely thoughtful and knowledgeable, and it was a thoroughly fantastic day. He was able to locate and point out birds I never in a million years would have been able to spot myself, and seeing them through his birding scope was amazing.

Cristhian was our guide for a customized week long trip. His profound knowledge and enthusiasm for the natural world is impressive. He made sure everyone in our 4 person group was able to see the bird he pointed out and we had also lots of opportunities for pictures. The trip was well organized and everything worked out. Cristhian is very professional, an excellent birder, humorous and personable. We couldn’t have wished for a better guide we, had an excellent experience.

My wife and I have met many bird experts and Costa Rica naturalists over the past six years. Every time we visit a different part of Costa Rica, we seek out competent naturalists to guide us in understanding the country's vibrant wildlife.

Of the guides we have commissioned across Costa Rica, Christhian is at the top. He is extremely knowledgeable in many areas, enthusiastic and able to locate and clarify not only animal taxa and behaviors, but also the ecological niches that they occupy. His English is very good. His birding skills are exemplary, and he does well with both new and experienced birders. It is really something to watch him call out to a specific wild bird and see the bird come closer.

Many guides have a rather narrow scope, e.g. the terrain and wildlife around a particular research center or tourist destination. We have retained Christian's services near Sarapiqui as well as in the areas east of Cartago, the Orosi Valley, the Reventazon River Basin and the Cerro Duan Range. His knowledge base is exceptional as he is very familiar with flora and fauna in these diverse areas.

Beyond his technical skills, we have found Christian to be dependable, honest and very interested in being flexible in setting goals and priorities. He is very attentive to questions and efficient in retrieving information that he needs to research.

I give Christhian my highest recommendation. He is the best of the best!!

I traveled throughout Costa for about 12 weeks from January thru March of 2013. I spent several weekends with Cristhian at a few different locations including Peñas Blancas de Cachí, Finca Monte Claro, and near Tucurrique. Cris is an extremely knowledgeable guide, and he has a very strong background in birding, herpetology, sustainable tourism, and ecologically friendly farming practices. I was fortunate enough to spend many days birding with Cris, doing night hikes to look for nocturnal wildlife, and learning about small scale local farms. I was able to see such a wonderful variety of organisms with Cris, some of the highlights were a jaguarundi, toucans, a cat-eyed snake, many frogs and lizards, and a lek of green hermits. He shared with me a lot of information about how all of the species are connected and dependent upon one another, as well as his knowledge about how people are working to interact and coexist more sustainably within these ecosystems.

I would highly recommend Peregrinus Tours to anyone who is looking to learn about the wildlife of Costa Rica, how we can protect it and ensure it continues to thrive in this beautiful country, and how we can live more sustainably so that we don't need to exploit the natural world around us and negatively affect it's survival and well-being. Cris is a very friendly and patient person, he has a strong grasp of the English language, and he is always good for a laugh. He has an incredible ability to mimic almost any bird call, and it is always fun and educational to spend time with him!

My wife and I made our third trip to Costa Rica in June 2013. Working through ACTUAR, an organization that helps promote community based tourism organizations, we booked a visit to El Copal Reserve, an amazing location in Cartago province where over 400 different bird species have been seen.
We asked ACTUAR if they had a bilingual bird guide who could travel to El Copal for 1/2 day to help us to find and identify birds. They arranged with Peregrinus Tours, located not far away from El Copal, to provide Cristhian Ureña for this purpose.
Not only was he extremely knowledgeable of the birds in this area, He knew their English names and communicated well with us. During the time he was with us, we saw or heard over 80 different species of birds. And while I was focused on birds, he knew about other flora and fauna in this area very well and described how all of them fit together to make this such a special place.
Christhian is very passionate about El Copal and is genuinely pleased when people learn about it and visit.
He needed to leave for San Jose to meet a group that he was taking on an expedition to Cerro Chirripo (the highest mountain in Costa Rica), but took the time to go through all of the birds that we'd seen and put together a detailed list that I could study and refer to later. This was a very big help to me.
If you are travelling to this part of Costa Rica (Turrialba and locations nearby), he knows this area VERY well and I recommend Peregrinus Tours' services highly. Although I have not used their services elsewhere, I would not hesitate to use them based on our experience at El Copal.
