A nice safe place to walk around, including the surrounding areas of town. The market is only about two blocks off of the downtown area if you can call it that, central for lack of a better word. Lots of varieties of vegetables etc and all very orderly and very clean.

Cartago has lots to offer visitors. Only a short 1 hr drive from San Jose. The Mercado Central is a must. After shopping and sampling local foods, check out the Cathedral of Our Lady of Los Angeles of Cartago. A huge church with a magnificent interior. There's a gallery in the back of the building (outside and below deck) displaying the icon of the Virgin. If you have extra time, take an Uber to the Botanical Garden for a relaxing time among the many beautiful tropical plants and flowers.

We stumbled upon this when we were walking around. Great food and other stalls. The thing that we really liked was that there was no one bothering us just because we were tourists. People were very kind in answering our questions, even though our Spanish is limited and they spoke no English.

This is a nice market, not small but neither extremely huge, offering the usual fruits, vegetable, some meat, cheese and some cloth. Nice to stroll around for a few minutes but not very different to other markets, unless you have never been to a fresh market

Under currogated metal roofs and still not hot. Good to have something local to eat here as prices are not as high as in San José and the atmosphere is more authentic. Peasant women selling fresh vegetables, fruit and chickens from their nearby farms.
Mercado Municipal is near the Railway station and just one block away from the Plaza Mayor and the ruins.

Cartago's mercado central is so much more fun and inviting than the one in San Jose, don't miss it! The stalls are interesting, the vendors are charming an the prices are very good. The outdoors vendors that surround the building have the best produce; the best bakeries are indoors. Don't miss trying the uchuva (gooseberries), they are delicious! We had a mobility impaired person traveling with us - she used a scooter to go through the market with no problem.

Our driver was a little shocked when we asked to go to the central market for lunch. He obliged & wandered with us while we found a food stall (soda) and decided what to eat. Such a fun thing to see local goods, foods, and people just interacting in a normal setting. Why would people not want to experience that while traveling? I loved my giant empenada, brushed up on my spanish and just hung out for a while. If you're traveling you might as well see how other people live!

This is a fairly typical market, and definitely enjoyable. As we went in late November, there was plenty of Christmas items available for sale. There was plenty of fruit and vegetables, as would be expected. The food at the vendors was good and we really enjoyed the market atmosphere. If possible, you'll probably want to avoid the washrooms.

If you enjoy local food, spices, fruits and vegetables, sights, smells, and people-watching, it doesn't get any better that visiting a town's central market. Cartago has a great one, just a few blocks from the Basilica. We parked a couple blocks away and walked around the market for 15 minutes or so, amidst the hustle and bustle of the friendly locals buying groceries for the week. An inexpensive place to stock up on supplies if you're passing through, or a quick peek into local life that would be easy to miss but shouldn't be.

We passed by this market after our tour of Vulcan Irazu and the Basilica De Los Angeles in Cartago. It was December so most of the stalls along the road were selling Christmas decorations.

We didnt have time to stop but because there was traffic infront of the market I was able to observe the busy activity in the area.It allowed me to see how markets look like in Costa Rica.
