Machine shop extraordinaire!

Loved watching the machines in action using belts, pulleys and shafts all driven by the water wheel! So cool!!
Wished we could have shipped furniture home!!

Colourful place to visit.
Dec 2019
You can drive from San Jose or take a bus - about an hours drive. It's a colourful place with all the wagon wheel designs on everything. Lots of items for sale - large and small. I bought a coffee table for outside and a couple of years. Prices are reasonable.

Good tour
Nov 2019
This place still makes ox-carts! Most of them, though, are hand painted for souvenir sale. Other crafts, such as trays etc. are also beautifully hand-painted. There is a tour of the facility, and the water wheel powered tools are interesting to see at work. The gift shop is extensive.

Great Stop For Souvenirs and Bathrooms!
May 2019 • Couples
This stop was on our Caravan Tour. It was interesting to learn about the oxcarts. The gift shop was the best of all the ones we stopped at the whole time on our tour.

Terrific stop for souveniers and a cultural lesson
Feb 2019 • Friends
This is a stop for all tour buses and for good reason. It has a huge souvenir shop, bus parking and it has cultural significence. The ox carts are still held dear in Costa Rica for their historic contribution to the economic growth through coffee exportation.

The artisans still practice their trade of handmaking the ox cart wheels then painting them in colourful and rich patterns.

My 2nd choice for Sarchi cart factories
Mar 2019 • Family
We arrived at 4:30 pm on a Saturday (they close promptly at 5). Not a whole lot going on in the factory. One artist was painting. We did not see a woodshop per se. Nice examples of the carts and plenty of souvenirs. The grounds in the back are nicely landscaped in contrast to Eloy Alfaro's factory grounds. I wish there would have been some information about the history of the carts and their use. Having been to both, I found this factory similar to, but less interesting than the Eloy Alfaro factory.

A very interesting place - water powered original woodwork and art factory
Nov 2018 • Couples
As a tech person , this factory was fascinating as the lathes and otehr rotating machinery are powered by a flywheel , rotated by water from a nearby stream. One can see local artists painting local art and they have a modern showroom with interesting souvenirs for purchase. Worth a visit specially if one is in the area

Interesting display of oxcarts in the back
Jun 2018 • Family
This is a souvenier shop, and a very good one. You can find a huge selection of Costa Rican crafts and t-shirts. The oxcarts in back are from various periods, and you can observe the painters who are working there. It's easy to park, unlike some other places. The store is in Sarchi Sur, so depending on which direction you come from, you may need to drive through Sarchi Norte first, but it's not far.

Traditional OxCarts
Mar 2018 • Friends
Sarchi is famous for its painted ox carts. We visited the Eloy Alfaro workshop located behind the Don Lolo restaurant. The woodworking shop is still powered by a water wheel! In the finishing area workers were painting components of the cart. All of the intricate designs are painted by hand. After the tour you can purchase souvenirs in the shop.
