As an active volcano, the views here change every few minutes. When we arrived, after a nice drive through the Costa Rican countryside, the volcano was totally obscured. We could easily been disheartened after driving so far. However, with a little patience, the wind changes directions and you get great views of the volcano. Then they will go as quick... More

I was in and out in under ½ hour. You walk on a wide trail filled with hordes of tourists to get to the vista, snap your picture and then turn around and leave. I regrettably stopped here on the way to La Fortuna and wasted a lot of time. The extra 1.5 hours it took to veer off the... More

What a beautiful place to tour on your own! The visitor's center is very informative, the gift shop is lovely & the staff ready to answer all your questions. The trail to hike to the crater is marvelous! Good work Costa Rica!

We toured the volcano on a breezy day. Our hotel's proprietor told us we'd have a chance to see the crater and the beautiful lagoon as the cloud usually came and went when there was a steady breeze. We were lucky to see both and get beautiful photos. Don't skip the trail to the lagoon -- it's only a short... More

This is an easily accessible volcano around San Jose. Not very spectacular but worth the little drive to see it. Well established with loads of ticos to watch. We found it a relaxing little side trip from Alajuela.

Great place to visit when in Costa Rica, about 1.5 hours from San Jose. the drive up the mountain is a real treat, amazing to see how they live, the coffee plantations and the roads wind up the mountain. You have to be lucky to see the actual volcano as you are about 7500 feet up in the clouds, but... More

If you want to see an active volcano in Costa Rica then you can always count on Poas! You just need to get there early in the morning before the clouds settle in. It can get chilly up there too so take extra clothing. Everyone I take there is impressed with Poas.

If the prospect of peering into an active volcano seems too good to resist, Volcan Poas might just underwhelm you. It doesn’t look like a picture-postcard volcano shape, and the slopes are covered in thick cloud-forest. If you are lucky enough to see into the crater, you might see the odd splutter of a fumarole (from a safe distance). But... More
