If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

It's difficult to get to if you don't have a car, as there aren't really public transport services to and from, so the only option is a taxi for around 20 USD. I went as part of another tour and am so pleased I was able to experience it, as paying for a taxi there and back would have been... More

This is an absolute gem... And even though there were lots of others there when we visited, we still felt like we had found a hidden paradise! The same hot spring-fed river that flows through the upper-end spa resorts is available for all for free further downstream. There are pools and rapids, all of it the temperature of a hot... More

Just park your vehicle near Tabacon springs entrance, look for a yellow guard rail on the opposite side of the road, walk a few hundred feet and you are at the free hot water springs. The water was warm, gushing and relaxing even under some rain drops falling from the trees on a rainy day.

The hot springs are easy to find. There are plenty of people parked alongside the road. There is a short path down the hill, through a hole in a fence, to the river. Just leave your belongings on the shore and hop in! The water is perfect!

Ok, so it is free and it takes some time to figure out where it is but it is truly an experience you wont forget. The locals go there early in the morning or late at night when all the tourists are gone (although we have been warned not to go there at night for safety concerns). Weekends are packed... More

I'm sure there are things at the actual resorts that are nice but I sure am not gonna pay to find out. The free springs are great. Plenty of room. Natural setting. Tourists and Ticos. I have 5 kids 5-14. They enjoy it. Just drive past the Tobacan Hot Springs, past the two lots they have roped off, park on... More

It is directly across from the Tabacon hot springs that charges I think $80? per person. Too pricey for me. So you park in front of this place charging $80 along side the road and walk across the street and get in hot springs for free!! Lol. It was pretty crowded when we went in the afternoon, but at night... More

Loved the water and the idea of being in the nature setting until the local pulled out their weed. Made my kids uncomfortable and was not the most pleasant to smell.

It was just awesome! It does get crowded at times but most people do not stay did not stay too long because after a few minutes, it was only a few of us left. The water was perfect. A great way to relax after a long hike. There are shuttles that go by there at certain times. I think we... More

Our guide got some lava mud from our volcano hike and gave us facials! It was perfect! There were candles lit as well and the temperature in the water was perfect.
