- Tikitiki212Wisconsin141 contributionsAmazing wildlife tourIncredible tour! We did this on our first full day in Costa Rica and it was the perfect introduction to the rainforest and wildlife. Our guide was amazing and we saw SO many animals and insects. We learned a ton too. After this tour, we felt we didn't need to have guides at every other place we went, since we had already seen soooo much wildlife at Bogarin! Definitely recommend this. Our entire group from teens to seniors loved it.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- Andrew MHolmfirth, United Kingdom10 contributionsEverything we hoped and more!We went to Bogarin to do our own self guided walk during the day and managed to find a few things, but knew with how excellent the trails were there was more to see. We decided to book a night guided walk and did this with William. The experience was far better than we could ever have hoped. We saw everything we could have imagined and more! William and all the team were great and very knowledgeable.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023

- luca a18 contributionsSafari !We ard two italian tourist that did this amazing trail, there are so many animals to see. We got the luck to have a guide of the bogarin family who created the park. Without a guide it would have been difficult to spot most of the animals cause they hide, hightly recommended to visit!Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 11, 2024
- Paul MLancaster, California10 contributionsWow! William has eagle eyes! Amazing! This was an awesome tour. The business that this family has created is amazing. We went with William, one of the Bogarin brothers who over 20 years ago founded this business. He has eagle eyes! If we were walking by ourselves, we might have seen one thing. But William, with his scope, pointed out animals and birds and insects and frogs over and over. We were truly amazed. He carried a high, magnification scope and constantly took pictures and videos with our phone to capture these amazing creatures. We could not have had a better tour anywhere! Two thumbs up. Highly recommend.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 12, 2024
- Jim T12 contributionsLa Fortuna Magical Mystery Tour! The guided tour was two plus hours of MAGIC! Our knowledgeable, friendly and engaging guide, Mar, pointed out countless plant and animal species, none of which we would have spotted without her guidance. And her reverence for nature and her native culture were contagious! Highly recommend.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 20, 2024
- marjuradoMiami, Florida9 contributionsBirds and more birdshighly recommended, it is right off the road and it takes you into another world, of forest and birds and monkeys and sloths. at the entrance they have a bird feeding sticks with fresh fruit and you can seat and watch all kinds and colors of birds, including the beautiful Toucans. at the end of the parking lot there is a great restaurant.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 16, 2024
- Leslie L10 contributionsA great experience of wildlife near La FortunaWe did the self-guided option at the Bogarin Trail. As teachers and biology nerds, we loved the variety of plants, animals, birds, and reptiles that we saw while we visited. We made sure to walk each trail and stopped a lot along the way to look at things. I would highly recommend binoculars and/or taking a guided tour if you don't know what to look for.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 16, 2024
- rdg16Denver, Colorado33 contributionsGuided tour made this a hit.Our tour guide, William, made this activity a hit for the entire family. He was so knowledgeable about the area, the history, and the animals it made a complete difference. Our two teen boys talked about William the rest of the trip and compared every other tour guide we encountered to him. We were able to see so many animals and the short amount of time. Had we not had a guided tour, I'm not sure we would have seen much of anything except trees.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 25, 2024

Our guide was great at capturing pictures with my phone of the animals we saw. My favorite were the frogs!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 11, 2024

Fabulous morning with our guide, William! He took his time to point out many birds and we saw 7 sloths. One of my main reasons for coming to CR. He let us smell different leaves from cilantro, lemon, “Bengay” plant and many more. He gave us his hx and that of the trail and the volcano. And he cut up a pineapple for us to eat. You see most of the wildlife the best through his high powered scope. Have your camera readily available for him to use his scope to take pics/videos. He has a phenomenal eye to find the birds and sloths. He’s safety conscious and environmentally conscious!

This was by far one of the best things we did in our time in Costa Rica. Our tour guide, William, was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the city, plants, trees, and of course the animals. Sure, you can do the trail on your own. But chances are, it won’t be as good and you won’t see as many, if any, animals. William was fantastic and I highly recommend this experience.

My wife and I paid for the guided tour with Eduardo. I can tell you for sure that you will NOT see near the wildlife you could without these expert guides. Eduardo knew where all the animals were hanging about and was quick in setting up his telescope so that we could get great views. He would often take our camera phones and take pics through the lens. Eduardo was extremely patient and taught me how to take pics myself and helped with the Spanish names of the various animals. The tour was a little over two hours but it was an extremely great value. I highly recommend this trail and I would see if you can get Eduardo. He is a wonderful man and will make sure you see a lot of things!

We had heard really good things about this nature walk but honestly did not know what to expect. We were assigned,”William” the owners brother as our guide. We had three adults in our group. He was very friendly and attentive. He walked through the trails like a hawk noticing the smallest movements. He had a spotter telescope he would set up for us to look through or even take pictures through. He knew names of every frog, bird or other creature we encountered.he was also very knowledgeable about the trees and other plant life.
Here are some of our photos from our nature walk on the Bogarin Trail.

Amazing experience going for the guided tour with Beatriz!! She was an amazing guide and you can tell she was very passionate about guiding. We found so many amazing animals! She had a lot of great information about the animals and the plant life around the park. Would definitely recommend doing the guided tour as we were able to see so much better with their telescope. Cannot recommend more!

All I can say is that paying for the Bogarin Trail is the best money we spent. After almost 2 weeks, we hadn't seen many animals and were desperate to have a good, knowledge guide. Jason was our guide. He was just amazing, knowledgeable and great with our 2 boys. We saw so much wildlife and Jason was able to explain so much about the local wildlife and answer the many questions our boys had. As we really wanted to see the Toucans, we were invited to come back later on in the day to have the chance to see them. All in all, we spent most of the day there, we loved it. Go, without a doubt...
Thank you Jason and thank you to all the friendly staff at the Bogarin trail!

We arrived at this location just after opening in order to avoid crowds. There were still quite a few people there and one family with very noisy misbehaving children did not make our visit as pleasant as it should have been. Before anyone says “ kids will be kids”, there is no reason that children can’t be taught to be considerate and respectful. After all, when you’re on a trail, you’re there to experience what nature has to offer. On a visit to Macaw Lodge one of the sweetest little boys I’ve ever met would speak in hushed tones whenever he went on a nature walk as he listened for birds. He was a treasure and so fun to be around but unfortunately that was not always the case on the Bogarin Trail as we found ourselves trying to rush to escape the screaming boys. We were able to enjoy parts of the trail in peace but did not see any sloths. We did not hire a guide but according to the people I spoke to, they were hiding that morning. I did see a colorful Toucan and enjoyed the pretty view of Arenal. All in all, it wasn’t a waste of money or time but not anything fantastic either. Clean restrooms available and if it rains shelters are situated around the property.

MUST GO! Our tour guide Jason helped us find so many different animals we would not have found on our own and was a wealth of knowledge! Takes about 2.5hrs. Muddy in many areas, so bring hiking shoes. The owner shared his story of founding this nature area, and his dream coming to life. He is very passionate and well worth the $40/person! At the end of the hike they provided us with a Pineapple was the best I had ever had! PURA VIDA!!

This was a great stop and while we were interested in seeing bird species it's a good spot for lots of wildlife. It started well with a great staff member at the front desk and she helped us figure out a plan. We actually went once in mid-day then came back later in the afternoon as some birds were not out the first time. The second time we took a guide and he was a wealth of information and found us an owl we'd have never seen. We saw some amazing birds!
The trails and flat and well maintained, the walking is easy. Pay attention to the map as the ponds are worth the visit and there is also a very nice restaurant near the trail with an outdoor bar facing that side. I recommend the Passion Fruit Mojito!

We arrived at the trail fully planning on doing a self-guided tour... which would have been a huge mistake. We reluctantly were talked into paying more to let William give us a tour, and we might have been convinced on paying double had we known what we would be seeing and hearing. I have no doubt that we would have spotted maybe (maaaybe) 15% of what we ultimately ended up seeing had we not taken the tour with William. His stories about the plants and animals he's lived alongside while growing up on Arenal, and his keen eye for finding creatures - sometimes hiding in plain site literally a few feet in front of you - was worth the price paid. So much more happened as well, but I'll save the spoilers so that everyone can have their own unique experience! This was our kids first nature tour on their first trip to Costa Rica, and could not have started any better. HIGHLY recommended.

Hi there looking for a tour for 4 adults in the next 3 days. Do you have availability and how much please would it be? Thank you
Written July 26, 2022
I agree with everyone that a guide is worth the money. All the people working there were pleasant and helpful, a group of 4 people should not be a problem if you just show up. I’d go early, your admission is good all day, you could take a break (there’s a good food court type place nearby) and go back and wander around on your own.

We called the day of to inquire about a tour. They let us know the prices. They offered to have us book over the phone but we just let them know we were going to arrive in about an hour and ended up booking upon arrival. Highly recommend going with the guide to be able to see the wildlife.

Is it necessary to books tour ahead of time for April or are tours usually available same day?

You can show up minutes before any guided tour scheduled, but we recommend to save your space in advance since we work with small groups. Besides booking is free of charge!

We toured with Geovani over 12 yrs ago and loved his tour. He was an amazing bird guide and absolutely passionate about birds. I would love to contact him if we come again. Does anyone have his contact info? Thanks!
Written January 30, 2020
Agreed. They are very responsive. Not sure if they would give his personal information out specifically, but it seems that he is often there and I think he had a public email or social media page to reach him at.

Hello. Do I have to take the tour and pay $35 or I can just pay the general entrance fee $10 and tour on my own? Thanks

Get a guide for this tour! We thought we could do CR without a guide and finally broke down after many hikes of not seeing anything. This was my absolute favorite thing we did. The guide William was fantastic he showed us the blue jean frog, the red eye tree frog, 7 sloths and some caiman along with tons of birds. I can honestly say we would not have seen anything but maybe one sloth if we had been on our own. Also had great conversation about his life growing up in CR.

How do I contact the owners to book a guided day hike and a guided night hike? Thank you!

If you contact them direct they do have guides to take you around but not sur about night time.
Good Luck

What is the best time of day to do this tour to see the most sloth activity? We'll be there the first week of September. Thanks!

We were there mid-afternoon in March and saw about 10 sloths, including one that was wide awake !

We will be visiting in April and staying at Tabacon. Does anyone have any experience with getting transportation to the trail without a rental car. Assuming we can just take a taxi but just curious of others experience. Thanks!
Written December 28, 2018
You can ask at the Reception of Tabacon Hotel to call a taxi for you. We have many clients that have been doing that :)
