About
We have a tour at 8:30 in the morning or at 1:30 in the afternoon. We have the tour to La Fortuna waterfall. The tour consists of a one hour ride through pastures and farmland. Then we venture into the jungle were we cross a river and proceed up the mountain to the waterfall Rio Fortuna. There you may swim for approximately one hour after we return down the mountain to our farm. The tour is around 3 or 4 hours. You are going to need long pants, good shoes, a bathing suit and towel, along with anything else you feel necessary. At the end of the tour we will be at our house waiting with a delicious organic chicken barbecue with natural juice $85 per person.

After reading endless reviews for different horse excursions around La Fortuna, I decided to go with Alberto's, and it was FANTASTIC. He was so nice and knowledgeable, and told us so many hilarious and fun anecdotes about his life and about living in La Fortuna. The ride itself was wonderful--riding up the jungle stream was incredible. And we loved visiting the La Fortuna waterfall (a great break and cool off opportunity!). The horses all seemed very well cared for too. Fantastic experience, highly recommend!

We visited Alberto before in 2014 and this experience was actually way better.

This is a lovely family and the wife made a great chicken fajita lunch with delicious juice afterward. Their little two year old daughter and her kittens won our hearts!!!!

If you are confident in your abilities there are open fields where you can break away from traditional nose to tail and gallop. That said, there are some tight spots in the beautiful jungle and streams where single file is mandatory.

The horses are very responsive and well cared for.

Cold waterfall visit is a refreshing break from the saddle on a warm day.

I found Alberto's Horses after doing some extensive research on many different platforms. We could not have been anymore satisfied. Let's begin with their humanitarian practices with the actual horses. While they definitely consider your astrological sign, they also consider your comfort, experience, and weight. Interestingly enough every one of us (7) was paired with a horse almost identical to their personality LOL. Alberto does an amazing pre, during, and post job at making sure the horses and riders are comfortable and safe. The waterfall was a magnificent experience. Although it rained on us, Alberto prepped us well and we all had ponchos and even waited some before taking off on our way back. Once we arrived, the horses were washed and left free in their space to live freely. We chose to eat prior to the excursion since it worked best with our plans, and Alberto and co. did amazing in accommodating that. Look no further. I guarantee you will be satisfied.

We booked our trip the day before. They wanted a deposit via PayPal but we didn’t have an account so they said we could just come early in the morning. We arrived as requested at 8:00am for the 8:30am trip (first ones there). We paid in full in cash ($85/person, $425 for our family). They then “ordered” the horses which supposedly were to be matched to our astrological sign. We waited 50 min for “our” horses to be brought in from wherever they were, saddled up etc. (so close to 9am now). No problem at all since we did not provide a deposit and things take time. BUT THEN ANOTHER family showed up (late) and they told us that they now did not have enough horses so we would have to wait ANOTHER 45 min for them to go back, get more horses and saddle them up. So a total of 1-1/2 hours just standing and waiting with absolutely nothing to do. Not even an apology. As much as I wanted to ride, I could not stay here on principle and accepted my refund. I went to Horseback Riding Arenal which gladly accepted my business, ended up with a PRIVATE tour (instead of grouped with what would have been a total of 11 people plus guides) and saved $100! It ended up working out but we were lucky that it didn’t ruin our day and experience here as we were only in the area for 2 days. I recommend going with a place that that keeps their horses onsite (like Horseback Riding Arenal).

To start I need to disclose that I am not a fan of horses. I have been around them my whole life but never got the appeal. My wife loves them so every few vacations I breakdown and go on a horseback ride, or she goes and I do something else. My expectations were this experience would be similar to before, I would sit on a decently mannered horse and after an hour get off the horse still not understand the appeal of horses. I was so wrong!!!

First you’re not just getting a horse ride with Alberto’s horses, you’re getting a Costa Rican experience that also has horses. When you first get there they want to know your astrological sign, I thought that was strange, but it helps them pair riders to horses. On our trip Alberto’s 5 year old son Santiago was our guide. He is really 5 years old and he absolutely lead the way on his horse. If you’re at all conversational Alberto will talk about history, his business, politics, economics and anything else you might be interested in. Of corse you get to go to the waterfall which is well worth the hike. Then ride back on Alberto’s exclusive route back the way you came and have a delicious meal. We were lucky enough to have the whole family eat with us for a great experience.

Book with Alberto directly through email or Facebook. I asked him about this and he explained that hotels and agents want up to 40% booking fees and overbook his tour. He likes to keep groups small and has only so many horses to pair up and he wants to keep it affordable. Alberto’s horses are well cared for and well mannered. This experience may have just made me rethink my view on horses.

Alberto and his family provided us with the best horse riding experience we’ve ever had. The horses were so well trained, the tour was absolutely amazing, and Alberto was one of the most humble people we met in Costa Rica. The lunch at the end cooked by Laura was phenomenal!!

Don’t miss this awesome experience when in La Fortuna. Alberto and his family were so nice and welcoming! The horseback riding tour was breathtaking riding through the pastures with Arenal Volcano in the background and across a creek on the way to the La Fortuna waterfall. Then you get to spend some time swimming at the falls before riding back to finish up the tour with a yummy home cooked meal. It was my first time horseback riding and I felt so safe and in great hands! This experience 100% exceeded my expectations!

Absolutely best choice for the horse riding trip to waterfalls. Alberto and his wife are running this business by themselves. Book it directly with them! He is the guide and she is the cook. We scheduled a tour at 1:30 pm with our 6 years old son and I was nervous because we don’t have any experiences with horses. Alberto knows what he does and pair you with very good horses. The tour went through the farmer fields, river and mud. It was steep in some parts. But there were four of us and Alberto handled really well. Then we got to waterfall and got the chance to swim there. Amazing views! We went back the same way and Lauren (Alberto’s wife) made us a very delicious meal with a fresh juice. We paid $85 per person and gave a tip because every minute of this trip was worth it. My son ended up playing with their 5 years old son Santiago!

Our 7 kids went out with Alberto today and had the most amazing time. Lovely family owed business, well taken care of horses and the adventure was guided by Alberto himself. They went through pastures with lovely views of the volcano, down rivers and even got to dip into the waterfall. "The highlight of our trip". The adventure ended with a delicious bbq at their home. Thank you Alberto for making this so such an unforgettable experience. They do not have a website but you can contact them through Facebook. Highly recommend the experience.
