The best horseback tour we've done anywhere
We did this tour with our kids (aged 8 and 9). To begin, Alberto is an extremely pleasant man and a very good host. He was very patient, instructive and did a great job guiding our group (which was 8 people total). To follow that, this wasn't the typical American "get back in line" type of horseback experience. There are times, like on the jungle path, where you are forced into a single rider line scenario, but that is the exception. Most of the time, you flow as a group through farm, jungle, river and road until you get to the waterfall entrance. We felt that the pacing was good, and the coconut water stop going up was nice. The waterfall is amazing, and it was very satisfying feeling that this tour as a whole was a journey. It was more than just horseback riding for the sake of riding a horse. The included lunch at the Waterfall restaurant was very good. It is a pretty long tour, around 4 hours. So if you have the time, take the trip with Alberto!

    Top Notch Trip
This was one of the BEST parts of our vacation in Costa Rica. Alberto was kind and a great guide. The horses were gentle and our whole family (2 boys: 12 and 15 and two adults) had a wonderful time. The way to the waterfall is varied - going thru fields, streams, and on a road. And the meal at the waterfall was excellent. Don't miss this one!

    A very special memory
Thank you Alberto for doing an afternoon waterfall ride. We were just 4 and we were not experienced in horse riding yet the horses were well trained & the trail took in farmland creek crossings with time to walk to Fortuna Falls, swim & enjoy dinner. The ride home was in fading light & the fire flies were everywhere! Thank you Alberto for your patience & caring person, your love of your horses is plain for all to see.

    Amazing horseback riding experience
This was such an amazing experience! We rode through several ranches with lots of cows and an unobstructed view of the arsenal volcano which was absolutely beautiful. We also rode through a creek and a muddy trail through the hill which was a lot of fun. The experience also included admission and meal at La Fortuna waterfall (including smoothie, coconut water, and ice cream). The whole experience was about 5 hours and so worth it.

One of my best life experiences!
It was one of the best things I’ve done in my life. Alberto knows which horse to choose for you based on your personality. After the ride we couldn’t stop thinking about our experience with the personality of our horses. The adventure was one of a kind. Great food and excellent staff. Swimming in the waterfall was just like a dream. The way they treat their horses is exceptional. I would definitely come back to this place. I highly recommend this place. It’s so much different from everything else. You will love it. The only negative thing I can think is that I’ll miss the horses!

    Unforgettable family experience!
Our family of five, including kids aged 10, 8, and 5, had a wonderful time. We have little to no experience with horses, but everything went smoothly. You start off from the farm and go across fields for a while, all under the shadow of the volcano. Then, the ride gets pretty interesting and you go down by a jungle creek. It's hard to explain, but it's exciting and just a bit scary at the same time. You can tell the horses are extremely well trained and almost go on auto pilot. If my 5 year old can do it on a horse by herself, anyone can. After emerging from the creek, you ride along the road until you reach a roadside stand and get your own coconut to drink from. Then a little bit further along the road until you reach La Fortuna waterfall. Lunch was great, several options including a fruit smoothie. Then you get to swim at the bottom of the waterfall for about an hour. There are quite a few steps to walk down, then back up, at the waterfall, take your time. Then, back on the horses and go back the way you came. Also, the whole time we were riding, Alberto's dog came along and joined the adventure. I would highly recommend this experience to just about anyone. Our family loved it and Alberto was an outstanding host/guide. Definitely something I think our kids will remember fondly.

    The best!
Alberto is THE BEST! The whole experience was perfect! Views of the volcano, well cared for, gentle horses, walking through the creek on horseback, the waterfall and delicious meal! A stop for fresh coconut water! It was the perfect morning. Best part.. my 6 year old was afraid and didn’t want to ride by himself. Alberto was gentle and talked him into riding his own horse with Alberto holding the lead.. but the end of the trip my 6 year old was riding by himself and was so proud. He still talks about it. Thank you, Alberto.

We had such an amazing experience riding to the waterfall. Alberto is an experienced “cowboy”Who’s been riding for 37 years. He grew up riding horses, taught his boys to ride and is his lifestyle in every way. He speaks excellent English. He makes sure each rider is on the right horse according to their ability. He is kind, friendly and professional. We started off by riding through his pastures. We dipped down and rode through two rivers and up a path to the street that heads to the waterfall. We stopped for fresh coconut drinks along the way. Once we got to the waterfall, we got off the horses and they rested while we went to the waterfall for an hour or so. We headed back to his ranch the same route we came. It is so beautiful and scenic. Once we got back the the ranch, we headed upstairs to where his family lives for a home cooked meal on a balcony. His grandchildren were there, we got to hold their brand new puppy and they treated us like dear friends. The food was amazing and Alberto sat down to eat with us. If you truly want a Costa Rican experience, this is it. It has been by far our favorite activity. He makes it personal, you get to know him, his family and hear about him growing up in Costa Rica. We’ve been on another ride in Tamarindo and there is no comparison to Alberto. It didn’t feel touristy but instead an experience that lets you experience the true Costa Rican culture with a kind family that treats you like friends.

If I could rate this horseback riding trip higher I would. An absolute must-do if you are looking for a horseback riding excursion. Alberto and his family are wonderful, we truly felt so comfortable in their capable hands. We took the afternoon trip so our day started with a delicious lunch at the stables, which even accommodated the vegetarians in our group. After eating they assigned our horses to us using our astrological signs, which surprisingly enough was very accurate. We had a wonderful ride through open fields, through streams, a stop to get coconut water right from the coconut, and an hour stop at La Fortuna Waterfall. The ride back was just as wonderful. When I ask my kids what the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica was they all agree it was horseback riding with Alberto.

We didn’t plan to horseback ride in CRC but a last minute hole in our schedule allowed us the opportunity. In looking through reviews Alberto seemed to have few reviews but they were all great. Plus he didn’t seem like one of those commercial operators so we decided to go with him. You pay an advance (PayPal) to book and then pay the balance in cash or PayPal before the ride.

The ride starts from Alberto’s stables where you park the car and get on the horses and winds it’s way through farmland with an amazing view of Arsenal volcano. Then it goes down a steep gully into a stream where the horses take you upstream and eventually on to a paved road that takes you to La Fortuna waterfall. The ride takes an hour to 90 minutes each way with an hour at the waterfall. The trip concluded back at the stables with dinner on the balcony (the most delicious chicken I’ve ever eaten).

Alberto is a kind and patient man with a wealth of knowledge. He was really patient and understanding with my girls who were a bit apprehensive. Never did we feel like we were rushed. The horses are very gentle and Alberto does a fantastic job matching you with the right horses. The dinner made by Alberto’s wife afterwards felt like eating with someone who’s your longtime friend in Costa Rica!

I highly recommend Alberto and please go with him and support the locals in La Fortuna instead of the larger commercial operations. You will thank me for it afterwards for the once in a lifetime experience.

What an incredible experience! Albertos Horseback riding tour to the waterfall was amazing. It was about a 4 hour tour. We started at Albertos house where the stables and horses are. We were matched with a horse based on our experience horseback riding and our horoscopes. We then began our fully private tour through the gorgeous rolling farm fields behind Albertos house where we walked past cows, dogs, and gorgeous views of the mountains and Arenal Volcano. After we past the fields, we headed into the rainforest where we had to cross a river. This part was super fun as it was raining and the river was flowing fast, but the horses passed safely and with confidence. After that we made it up the mountain to the La Fortuna Waterfall. The horses have a special area called "Horse Parking" where they are able to rest and snack on hay. We then proceeded to the 500 steps down to the waterfall, which are totally worth it. Afterwards, when we returned to Albertos house, his wife had prepared an amazing meal of arroz con pollo and pico de gallo for us to enjoy with them. Overall this tour was an amazing experience and the best part was that we were able to support a local business and family. Alberto and his family are very sweet people and we highly recommend this tour!

We visited Alberto before in 2014 and this experience was actually way better.

This is a lovely family and the wife made a great chicken fajita lunch with delicious juice afterward. Their little two year old daughter and her kittens won our hearts!!!!

If you are confident in your abilities there are open fields where you can break away from traditional nose to tail and gallop. That said, there are some tight spots in the beautiful jungle and streams where single file is mandatory.

The horses are very responsive and well cared for.

Cold waterfall visit is a refreshing break from the saddle on a warm day.

We did the La Fortuna Waterfall horse back riding tour with my 5 year old son and I.

The tour involves a one hour horse back riding through the fields where you get an amazing view of the volcano, a short trek through the river which was absolutely magical, a pit stop at a local coconut place to get some coconut water, before going on the roads towards the top of the waterfall. At this point you park the horse. Once at waterfall, you order your lunch at the restaurant so it’s ready when you come back up. You get to spend around 1 hour at the waterfall/swimming the river. You come back up, have lunch at the restaurant which was amazing, then you make the trek back with your horse back the same route. The whole tour lasted around 5 hours.

We both have had no experience with horse back riding before. The horses are so tame and gentle then it was perfect for us. It was very easy to learn the basics on the spot and control the horse. It was great that my son was able to have his own horse. Alberto (the owner) he held on to a rope attached to my son’s horse the whole time. Therefore, he didn’t actually have to control the horse. Alberto and his team was great, his wife was super responsive to all my questions leading up to the trip. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone, definitely a highlight for my son and I to have this magical experience together.

Some tips
- bring water shoes with you for the waterfall
- drink lots and lots of water. It’s a long and sunny ride, so can easily get dehydrated

10/10 experience! Highly recommended! You can’t beat it! I doubt it can be topped or that you can do better anywhere else. Great adventure with our 6 year old who got to ride his own horse. We were paired up with horses that matched our experience and comfort level. I felt safe and comfortable the entire time and so did my son. It is a well organized operation led by the horses’ owner himself, Alberto, who takes pride and joy in the care of his horses, and it shows. The animals are strong, healthy, and well taken care of. Alberto is patient, kind, energetic and very engaging. He was always watching out for everyone’s safety and provided clear and concise instructions. As for the tour, the trek through private lands gives you plenty of photo opportunities with the volcano and lush fields, and cows in the background. You will cross a creek where the animals drink water and go into a canyon which added to the experience. We stopped for cold coconut water out of the coconut (included), Alberto also carried regular bottled water for us, gave us ample time at the waterfall La Fortuna, and we never felt rushed. Lunch was included at the restaurant after the waterfall visit, and it was yummy. Look no further if you are looking for a great horseback riding tour! I have zero complaints or even suggestions because it was just perfect for us! Thank you, Alberto! Los Cubanos!

By far the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. Highly Recommend! Alberto makes you feel like you are hanging out with a friend, as you experience the land by horse. There were no others when we reached out, day of, so it was a private tour, accompanied only by a cute farm dog for almost half the trip. This may be because it was wet season & rained for the majority of our ride, but even in the rain, this whole experience was incredible. (Just bring a raincoat!)

The horses are well cared for, well behaved, & knew the trails well. The trail is not difficult, though you do go through a Canal, river, steep hills- fun if you’re wanting a little more challenge than the beach walks, but something to be aware of if you’re not. The rain felt cleansing & returning to the ranch for his wife Laura’s home cooked meal, fresh pressed juice, warm glowing lights, a kitten asleep in my arms & his sweet family was a whole experience in itself. This experience felt adventurous, personal & inspiring.
