The hike to Cerro Chato brought back some childhood memories of me hiking ridges and rain forests in Hawaii. I wished I had a pair of two-toed tabi shoes on this hike! Definitely a must do if you are the hiking type. Allow 2-3 hours...More

If you're in good shape, try the Cerro Chato hike but prepare for steep climbs and mud - it's through the cloud forest, something that you would enjoy!

Probably the 2nd best thing I did in Costa Rica (after white water rafting). The hike is billed as an "extreme hike". It's certainly an extreme hike for people not used to hiking, it's about 1.5km of very steep climbing through the forest (about 2...More

The Cera Chato hike was a bit disappointing after all the hype we had heard about it. To enter the park you pay $10 per person (the staff at the lodge were friendly and helpful). The hike itself though is poorly maintained leaves you navigating...More

This was a highlight. Just a great hiking experience. We started at the observatory, hiked up the volcano, into the volcano (went swimming), then out, and down to Green Lagoon. Round trip was about 5 hours. Important to bring sturdy shoes; there are alot of...More

We thoroughly enjoyed this hike! It's worth bearing in mind that with the majority of hikes in Central America, it rains a lot and trails that once were in good condition get muddy, slippery and overgrown as that's the beauty of nature, it's what makes...More

This was a climb strait up the side of Cerro Chato Volcano. Challenging even for avid hikers. But awesome!

My group of four decided to do this hike since the park fee was included in our hotel stay at the GreenLagoon. None of us are avid hikers; however, one is ex-military who runs 5 to 6 miles a day. We ended up hiking with...More

We did the Cerro Chatto hike. It is one of the reasons we changed our hotel to stay at the GreenLagoon Falls Park and Lodge. We were scheduled to do a tour that included the hike and it would have been $85 a person. If...More

One of the most arduous and tiring hikes ever. After we hiked the 'expert' trail of steep non-ending, it seemed, steps going up we were told that there was an easy path. Please bring more than .5 liter of water as we precariously did so....More

We climbed Cerro Chato about a month ago, and started on the Arenal Observatory side before coming down the La Fortuna waterfall side. To get to either starting point you'll probably want a car/taxi - you can walk to the... More
