About
Our specialty is combining paddling with an immersion into the natural Costa Rican environment. For more than 20 years, we have been guiding birdwatching trips throughout northern Costa Rica. And, for the past 14 years, we've also been guiding canoe trips in Costa Rica, Vermont USA, Canada, and Nicaragua. Enjoy nature while observing wildlife on the river banks of Costa Rica with our safari tours in your choice of canoe, raft, or kayak in the Penas Blancas River. Or you may prefer to enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Arenal Volcano by joining our Lake Arenal by canoe tour. If you would like to explore the nature of Costa Rica on foot, we offer walks to very recognized natural destination tours like Rio Celeste Hike, Cerro Chato Hike, and the majestic Arenal Volcano.

We went on this tour with our 9 and 14 year old kids, and all really loved it! We definitely recommend this tour.
Oscar was our guide and he was super knowledgeable and totally nice. His knowledge is not just superficial, but he was able to answer all our questions at great depth.
Even though it was raining once in a while, it was not a problem, and we still had tons of fun, since it was warm and we had ponchos. We saw a ton of animals (see list below).

We recommend raft over kayaks, since you can share water, binos, etc and don’t have to worry to be in another corner when the guide points to a certain animal.

In the end, you get to enjoy local snacks and drinks at a small restaurant. It was totally nice to taste these local specialties: tortillas with rice, homemade cheese and plantains, coffee and cacao, and sugar water from sugar cane.

Regarding Covid safety: we had requested to not have anyone else on the shuttle and we sat in the back with windows open and masks. On the boat, everyone was wearing masks, and Oscar was in the rear of the boat, such that the wind provides additional protection.

Here is what we saw:
Flycatcher Kissidi
Rainbow Toucan
Chestnut billed toucan (yellow throat toucan)
Howler monkey
Black vulture
Tropical Kingbird
Iguana
Gross beak
Green kingfisher
Amazon kingfisher
Howler monkeys
American crocodile
Mangrove swallow
Great heron
Anhinga
Broad-billed Motmot
Agouti

The wild life was great! The hiking was a 3.2 km but for those sensitive to high humidity and heat the hills can be a challenge. Wear appropriately clothing (light Merino is best or wicking clothing). Paths are mostly paved, but would not recommend sandles if raining or potential of rain.

Highly recommend floating down the river with this company. We were collected and dropped off at our hotel, taken to the river, safety procedures explained. Pedro was our captain on the dinghy and re spotted and recognised a plethora of species- birds, reptiles and mammals! Never thought we’d see so much wildlife, but as the boat was quiet and Pedro so knowledgeable we got the best experience.
We were then given a home cooked snack with coffee and sugar cane liqueur. Then a demonstration of cocoa growing, roasting and delicious tasting of chocolate! Que rico! An exceptional morning’s entertainment, thank you guys

This excursion has been the highlight of our trip so far. We stayed in Noah’s Forest and the bus picked us up right outside. We were greeted by three amazing gentlemen, Gio, Joe, and Bryan. From there we had a short drive to the Rio Arenal (I believe was the name) and then divided our group into two separate rafts with two accompanying guides, Joe and Bryan. My crew was captained by Bryan, a young man from Nicaragua, who gently rowed us down the river, stopping to occasionally point out the local wildlife. Meanwhile, Joe proved to be very knowledgeable as well as he slowly turned my brother into an expert on the many different kinds of birds that lived along the rivers of Costa Rica. By the end, we’d seen howler monkeys, iguanas, bats, owls, and even a crocodile. Do this adventure, it is more than worth it and you will want to come back and experience it again.

This was by far the best experience in La Fortuna. We did the El Burrito hike with Jorge A. And Brian on Christmas Day. First let me say that these two gentleman were amazing, kind, knowledgeable and welcoming. You need to be in good shape to do this hike and we took our experienced 9 and 11 year olds with us. Brian was so great with our daughter and was her personal guide for the day, they were great pals by the end. Jorge A was amazing it was like a walk in the woods with an old friend! We ended on Rauls farm for lunch and such warm hospitality. If you want as close to a true experience as you can get this is truly it. My heart is full after this trip and I am so grateful to them for sharing their time and knowledge with us. Canoa Aventura please extend a thank you to your guides they were truly nicest people! You are lucky to have them!

The tour guide was really nice and well informed. He did not push us and let us have alone time to look, talk, enjoy the surroundings. He provided us with a lot of facts and information about the area. The vehicle we rode in was clean, the guide also had a tripod with a scope so we could see animals that were far away. He took great photos for us.

Our family recently used Canoa for the full day Volcano hike, La Fortuna waterfall, and Hanging Bridges.

Full day, but giant shout out to Johnathan our guide for making this whole day amazing. Super fun, knowledgeable, and showed us so many things. He was such a great guide and a great person, and our family (teens included) still talk about him.

Couldn’t recommend it more!!

Our tour guides Jorge and Jason were very knowledgeable and seemed to love their jobs. Their excitement over seeing some of the animals made the trip even more special for us. Our driver Orlando was excellent as well! Every one from my 75 yo mother to my 15 yo son really enjoyed the trip.

During our visit in La Fortuna, we wanted to visit the lake near the Arenal Volcano. We asked a couple of guests for references and everyone recommended Canoa Ventures. They were so right! They picked us up in the hotel lobby right on time, have very comfortable buses and explained us everything ver clearly. The experience lasted over two hours and finished with a great fruit snack. The volcano was kinda cloudy but the experience was surreal. Thanks for everything!

We had a wonderful hike with canoe aventura company. We enjoyed the walk in the rainforest and the hike up the mountain. Definitely had a very memorable trip with lots of picture perfect moments.
The only room for improvement is punctuality of the bus. We were at the location as specified at 2pm but the bus was nowhere to be found. I wish the tour organizer would have called us to let us know they are running 30 minutes late. However, I was the one freaking out and calling them as I was thinking we missed the bus or were at the wrong location.
Overall, the trip and our tour guide David made up for the mishap. We loved the tour.
