About
Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (formerly Rescate Animal Zoo Ave) is a non-profit that has been rescuing wildlife for over 30 years. While educating the public about local wildlife, this rescue center and sanctuary also breeds endangered species for release to the wild. They have reintroduced several different species to previously extinct areas of Costa Rica and their current Scarlet Macaw breeding program plans to reintroduce a further 500 of the species by 2030. Every admission fee to the sanctuary goes to supporting their cause.

Great place to visit and only 15 minutes away from our hotel close to the airport. I wasn't sure what to expect as the area doesn't look very green but once you go through the entrance it's like stepping in to a weel kept jungle. All the paths are easy to walk and the animals are kept in large and very natural looking enclosures. Sometimes it was not possible to see the animal well but that's because they have so much space and places to hide. I think all of the aminals in the sancturay are not able to go back in to the wild because of injuries but they are well cared for here.

We had a really nice lunch in the restaurant and the price of the food was good for the size of portion (fish casado and patacones).

It's not cheap to get in but when you see the condition the animals are kept in it's easy to see where the money is going - really glad we went!

Rescue center was a last minute trip for husband and I. Only took us 2 hours to go through the entire park, but we were able to view (sometimes up close!) the wildlife of CR. Lizards, birds, “cats” and other large species were all enclosed. Informative cards and clean facility is worth a quick stop for the day.

This place is absolutely amazing. I loved every bit of it. The animals that are held there are ones that will stay due to health issues or other reasons that prevent them from being released back into the wild. The enclosures the animals were kept in are so well done and fit specifically to each animal. You can tell they are taken very good care of. There is a animal hospital on site, but you don't get to see the animals there as they plan to release those back into the wild. The animals were so beautiful and so up-close. Peacocks run wild through the park and so do many lizards. We didn't get a pass to skip a line. We just showed up and got our ticket at the desk. It was not busy at all. We actually decided to stay in Alajuela instead of San Jose just to visit this place. Definitely worth a visit!

The rescue center that really puts animal needs first, educating public about importance of release side and breeding endangered species. I appreciate how enclosures are designed to provide animals with welfare and the whole place look like the real jungle. Friendly stuff, very nice atmosphere, I’m looking forward to come back.

Zoo Ave was our last stop in Costa Rica before going back home. It is situated near to the airport at San José. We had lunch in the restaurant and then saw a lot of animals which we had not seen wild. A lot of birds, even wild toucans were there. The only disadvantage: there were lots of mosquitoes!

This rescue centre (formerly know as Zoo Ave) is really well done and very much morth a visit. The animals and birds have big cages and can hide if they want, and it seems all very animal friendly. You can easily spend 2 hours there or more, as its pretty big and its nice to have enough time to try to spot all the animals. It was a great way for me to end 5 weeks in Costa Rica, and to see macaws, spider monkeys, parrots etc. one more time. And I also saw a tapir, which I hadnt seen in the wild.

The rescue centre is also great for families. And the restaurant there is quite nice, I had a very tasty cascado with fish for 2900 colones.

Rescate is an animal rescue center that treats and releases injured wildlife, cares for animals in their lifetime sanctuary that cannot be reintroduced into the wild, and has a reproduction center for endangered species. This is an exceptional organization doing amazing work for Costa Rica and the world. Unlike many other “rescue centers” that are actually zoos and house animals just for the observation and interest of the public, Rescate is focused on animal care and release and comfort for the animals that must be held in their lifetime sanctuary. Everyone on staff is friendly and will offer time to answer questions. Also, their restaurant is delicious, and has a great view of several animal habitats. I learned so much. Definitely worth a visit when in the San Jose and Alajuela area.

This is a sanctuary that rescues native Costa Rica animals (and some non-native that people bring in). See birds, monkeys, large cats, etc in this place. Lots of iguanas just loafing about too. Don't expect a zoo, just expect to see some beautiful animals and make sure to read all the information on each animal and the different plants and trees.

Zoo Ave refers to a zoological aviary, primarily birds. There are some small species represented as week. These wonderful people rescue and rehab these magnificent tropical creatures. There are some monkeys, cats and lizards. Near the airport and across the street from my hotel, it was a must see for me. Well presented.

I am visiting in July so it is rainy season. I've been to many rescue centers, including in Africa, but this 20 Acre rainforest habitat is the best I've seen. Be aware that on a rainy day, the majority of wildlife is in hiding. Wait for the rain to stop. I walked the area twice, once in the rain and once afterwards. There are "viewing" benches all along the path and there are side paths that you definitely must explore. Don't worry they will all lead back to the main path. There are also places (small cafes with table/chairs) along the way to have a snack or buy a souvenir.
The main cafe has excellent food and it is a pleasant place to spend the day. There are many tables , a TV showing Animal Planet, great coffee. Enjoy your visit!
