About
The Rescue Center is dedicated to protect and help endangered Costa Rican wildlife indigenous to our beautiful country. First and foremost, our goal is to ensure the welfare of injured animals and help them recover from their physical and psychological wounds. We staff a team of experienced veterinarians who work at our on-site hospital in addition to the thousands of volunteers from around the world who have helped us over the past 10+ years. We rescue, rehabilitate and when possible release the animals back to their natural habitat. We are a non-profit and receive no government help financially. The passion of the owners, dedication of our staff and generosity of our volunteers and donors makes everything possible. We don't believe we can solve all of the world's problems but we do believe the work we do makes the world just a little bit better. We hope you feel the same way and if you do please click the links above and join our team as a donor, intern or volunteer. We look forward to seeing you soon in beautiful Costa Rica. Pura Vida

- Elsa1 contributionGreat experienceWe had a great experience at the rescue center and we have enjoyed every day we spent there. The owners and the staff of the center were so nice and helpful. It was a good mix of work and free time, with opportunities to do activities and go on trips every week. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life and would definitely recommend people to come to the rescue center and volunteer.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 21, 2023
- Ramiro Pablo Schejtman62 contributionsMy experience at the Rescue Center in Costa RicaThis is a very special and magical place. Let's start with that. If you decide to come and volunteer at the Rescue Center not only you'll be doing something meaningful, important and fun but also you'll be helping a lot of rescued animals that will be waiting for you. But it doesn't end there. The people you'll meet will become friends, the staff and everyone working there will become your family. You'll be able to enjoy dance classes, karaoke night and even Spanish lessons if you want to, and also choose excursions from a large variety of options because Costa Rica is beautiful, amazing and a great country to explore. I totally recommend you to choose this place as your volunteer project. Volunteering change lives, especially for the animals that need your help, but it will change yours too. This is a happy place! ❤️Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 18, 2023
- Juliette GIle d'Oleron, France1 contributionThe best experience of my lifeI lived my best life experience at the rescue center. Everything is made for the volunteers to feel at home. We’re accompanied, activities often take place, excursions are amazing and affordable. Everyone tries their best to make the volunteers live an unforgettable experience. I advise you the center if you want to live an extraordinary human and animal adventure. At the animal level, the things to do are varied and numerous, there is a great diversity of animals and they are well treated. The center has a lot of species and working with them everyday allows to learn more about local species and the natural environment. We prepare food, we clean and make enrichments. I loved my experience and mission, and I’m sure to come back soon. Now, I have a new family ❤️ Pura vida !Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 22, 2023
- Sarah ROxford, United Kingdom14 contributionsImpressive wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation centreWe took a small group tour with biologist guide Eduardo, who was brimming over with knowledge and enthusiasm. We learned so much about Costa Rican wildlife and saw animals that we would never have encountered in the wild. We were really impressed by the dedication of the staff to caring for injured wildlife, rehabilitating them where possible, and educating us about the richness Costa Rica has to offer.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 2, 2024
- Robert D31 contributionsSo CuteWe arrived just in time for a guided tour; this was a filler excursion, if we had time, and we’re so glad we did. Our guide was thoughtful and explained each animal’s name and circumstances. Some were unfortunate, most were due to human interaction, which was just sad. But, they looked happy and taken care of, now.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2024
- Rachel B4 contributionsOne of the highlights of my tripMe and my friend were trying to find somewhere to see the Costa Rican wildlife in an ethical way. As tourists it can sometimes be hard to tell from a company’s website if they really are what they say but as soon as we arrived I knew we’d made the right choice! A really lovely guide showed us round and took the time to explain how and why each of the animals had ended up at the rescue centre and whether they were ever going to be released into the wild. I found it really educational and could tell he genuinely cared! Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to see, learn and support the great work that the rescue centre are doing! #noanimalselfiesVisited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 29, 2024
- Beth A15 contributionsMy home across the oceanI wouldn’t exactly call it a once in a lifetime opportunity as you will probably want to go back again just like I did. This is my second time at the rescue centre and it was as good if not better than my first, I have been there for a month each time. I have made life long friends and memories that I will hold close to me forever. It is my home across the seas. This is a great place for all especially young solo travelers. All the staff are the sweetest and most caring people you will ever meet, you can really tell how much of their hearts they have put towards the animals the centre as a whole. Venessa and Laura listen to very single volunteers suggestions and needs and did their absolute best to fulfill them. If you would like a make a difference to the world this is definitely the place to do it. You will learn so much about the importance of Costa Rican wildlife and conservation. There are also many great trips opportunities they arrange for you at additional costs that I’d definitely consider doing as they make it much easier then if you are doing it on your own. This way you get to see more of Costa Rica. Id recommend going for a minimum of 10 days as this allows you to fully take in everything they have at the centre. Thank you to all at the rescue I can’t wait to go back and see you all again. xxVisited January 2024Traveled soloWritten May 4, 2024

Staff are just the loveliest and are so helpful! The work you do is so rewarding and so inspiring! I loved working with all the different species at the sanctuary it was incredible! Room as pretty standard but comfy enough and if you are sharing a room means you get to meet new people so your not alone! I had 5 of the best mates I met there and we all had a blast together! We came here as reviews were pretty good. We enquired and went on the same day. When we arrived it was immediately unusual when the girl stated the price is $40 but she can do half price if we leave a review.
We went on the tour which was led by a guy who didn’t even introduce the sanctuary and basically said here is deer, here are parrots. Very little information. We were with people who were volunteering and it felt like he was giving them the tour rather than us.
Also staff woke up a porcupine to weigh it even after saying it’s a nocturnal animal.
Some of the animals are interesting but the guide was really unenthused, lacking information and not a tour I would recommend.
What the sanctuary does I feel is a good thing. Just need to concentrate on giving decent customer experience. We have been on other tours in Costa Rica of a similar price and the guides have been significantly better.

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of volunteering at the rescue Center for a week and it was the most amazing experience. We will absolutely be returning and staying for longer next time. What stood out to us about this rescue was how the animals truly are the priority. The end goal is to release any animals that are capable, back into the wild. The animals that are not able to be released are treated with such care and live in ways that closely resemble how they would be living in the wild.
The coordinators do a wonderful job of planning activities for every night and fun excursions where you leave the Center. On nights in, they plan activities like dance classes and karaoke which are especially fun and a great bonding experience. Everyone stays up and participates (including coordinators!)
When going off-site for an excursion, they arrange everything (driving there and back, tickets if needed, etc.), so that you can just enjoy wherever you are going. During my time at the Center there were trips to La Fortuna, San Antonio, bars, waterfalls, coffee plantations, hot springs, and more. I appreciated how the coordinators work closely with the volunteers and have a daily meeting for everyone to voice their thoughts, receive animal updates, and discuss what they would like the next outside excursion to be.
The living accommodations were also great. I have a high standard for cleanliness and I must say that our room exceeded my expectations. They were very clean, the beds are very comfy, and there is plenty of storage space to put your belongings. We were in the huts and we loved it. They provide you with tools to repel the mosquitoes but we didn’t find that they were bad at all. They also have laundry day once a week!
In terms of the food, they are incredibly accommodating to dietary restrictions. I am vegetarian, my boyfriend is vegan, and they always had an option for both of us that was fresh and tasted so good. The meals were 10/10!
I have to mention one coordinator specifically, that being Ana Vargas. She was so pleasant our entire stay and really made it an amazing experience for us. She really cares about all of the volunteers and does anything and everything she can to give you a comfortable stay. She is always willing to help and really goes above and beyond. She really was a huge part of our experience (and a great karaoke singer)
We wanted to thank everyone at the Center for such an amazing experience. We will absolutely be going back and recommend this rescue for anyone that loves animals and wants an unreal experience working with them.

This organization rescues animals who need help because they have been injured, orphaned or swept up in the illegal pet trade. I spent one month volunteering on the vet team and it was an amazing experience. The staff is so dedicated. They want to give animals a second chance by rehabilitating them so they can be returned to the wild.
The work requires patience and creativity. Every day is different, and you have to be willing to get sweaty and dirty. I highly recommend a stay of at least two weeks (four if you are a vet or in training to be a different vet.) There are several zones and rotations, so volunteers who stay a little longer will get to work with many different animals. You’ll learn how to clean and maintain wildlife enclosures and how to prep fresh diets—every species requires something different.
The day starts early and ends between 4 and 5 with free time between morning and afternoon duties. And, if it gets too hot, there’s a great pool for cooling down. Make sure you bring plenty of sunblock!
Costa Rica is a very beautiful country and the staff will help you plan things to do on your day off. I’m a deaf solo traveler, and they helped me arrange transportation and activities including ziplining, ATV riding and memorable trips to beautiful places including beaches, rain forest and Manuel Antonio National Park.
Volunteers come from all over the world so this is an opportunity to make lifetime friendships with people who love to travel and care about wild animals. If you are hoping to cuddle with animals or post crazy selfies, this program might not be the right match for you. But if you care deeply about the well-being of wildlife, I can’t imagine a better place to be.

It was such a wonderful experience to be able to volunteer here. I stayed with a friend for week and we got to work with al sorts of animals! As a volunteer, you are responsible for the feeding, food preparation and cleaning the cages. It is hard work and you got to love getting your shoes dirty.
During your breaks, you get to relax at the big pool or hang out with people you meet at the center from all over the world.
On some days they offer karaoke or dance nights. And on your day off, you can make an organized trip with other volunteers.
They even offered us an extra night and booked a taxi so that we could go to the airport the next day.
It was an amazing experience I will never forget. I recommend it for everyone who wants to learn more about the animals, help them and see how big of an impact the center makes.

I had an amazing experience at the rescue center! I stayed there for 6 weeks together with my friend. I would recommend to stay at least 4 weeks because there is a lot to learn and it might take time to get into the routine. Though shorter than 4 weeks would also just be as fun!
I had so much fun working with the animals and the people, and the staff was very helpful.
It’s also a good opportunity to become friends with different people from all around the world!
The only negative thing I would say is that sometimes there were to many people for the work that we had.

I can recommend the Rescue Center Costa Rica to anyone who likes to take care of animals and is open-minded. I was there for a week with my girlfriend and we had a really great time. I would especially like to praise the respectful treatment between humans and animals, since the primary goal is to release the animals again. You can tell that the staff works wholeheartedly on this project. The work is not too hard and there are always opportunities to volunteer for more work, as there are many different groups that are happy to have your support. The pool area was a great place to meet new people and we spent some fun evenings there. Even if you are thinking of just being here for a week, feel free to do so because you will make connections very quickly. We two slept in a large tent and were very happy with the accommodation. The wifi is fast enough to make zoom calls. The food could have been a little richer in protein, but of course it is also personal preference. There was a small evening program on many evenings and would like to thank you again for the great time! Luis & Valli

The overall experience was wonderful! This is definitely a fantastic learning experience for any animal lover. The animals here are unique to anyone not from the area since they are common to Costa Rica and the surrounding region. The animals are well taken care of and everyone receives the amount of animal experience time that they want every day. The meals, accommodations, and transportation are all provided! The food is good and the living area is very homey. Everyone is friendly and approachable and by staying a long time, they start to feel like family. For anyone who is on the fence about this experience, I would say to do it because it’s a great opportunity to work with animals in a rescue center in such a beautiful country. I’m looking forward to hopefully returning in the future!

Amazing experience at the rescue center. I was there for 2 weeks and I wish i could have stayed longer but I could inly get 2 weeks off work 😞.
The staff is wonderful and dedicated to the cause. There is so much to do and everyone is working towards making their life better. Thankfully some of the animals can be released but the injured ones have to stay and be cared for by the center which is what the volunteers do every day.
I was worried at first that there will be only young people in their 20s and being a lot older i would be on my own but everyone is friendly and we share the passion for the animals so age doesn’t matter.
Most volunteers want to be in the animal team but I recommend volunteers to join the construction team because there is so much to do and it is all done for the animal (new enclosure, new playground etc…) and this is so fulfilling 👌.
I hope that I will be back!!

A wonderful rescue center! We are two German girls an we stopped at the rescue center to see all the animals and support the center. It was amazing... the people are very kind and helpful. The tour through the center was also very nice, we saw a lot of nice animals. It was not like a zoo! They care a lot about the animals and the new cages they build at the moment are very nice😍 If you are in Costa Rica, you absolutely have to visit it. It is worth it!!!

Arrived in the evening due to flight times, finding the airport driver was a bit of a task but managed it in the end. Arrived at the place, all looked fine to start with, there was no one there like reception or anyone in charge so I didn't really get much of a welcome, then I was shown to my room... If you are thinking you'll be staying somewhere like the photos shown on the website then think again. I was put in a room with 3 other people I'd never met before (all seemed nice but I would've rather at least met them before being thrown straight into a room full of strangers without being told beforehand) - being autistic and having anxiety this really didn't help. On the ceiling and wall of the bunk bed I was put in was mold, and spiders were crawling all over it. There was also a massive hole in the wall right by where I was supposed to sleep, with only a Mosquito net to cover it. On the other side of the hole was just random people's things and a whole load of bugs. This also meant that when people frequently walked past they could see in to where I was sleeping and changing, so there was absolutely not privacy. There was also no fan/air conditioning in the room or building, and with 4 people in a tiny room, it got extremely hot. The toilet was shared between I'm presuming the whole building, and was so dirty, and also make sure to bring a towel because they don't give you one. The next morning I had the breakfast served there which was nice, but where I was new, it felt like everyone else had already found their friend groups, so everyone was all sat together and didn't seem interested in company. Perhaps if I'd have stayed longer or gone with a friend then my experience could've improved but I followed my instinct which said to get out ASAP. If you're not bothered by living conditions, cleanliness or privacy then you can ignore this review, but for anyone like me then hopefully this is helpful.
