Located in a quaint city square of Alajuela, this large bronze monument celebrates the young soldier/drummer Juan Santamaria, whose heroic actions became a symbol of Costa Rican independence. Not sure where the story in another review of "switched statues" came from. This sculpture clearly depicts Santamaria holding the torch he used to destroy the enemy's quarters in Rivas. Around the base of the monument are bronze friezes representing other details of the event. Also, the French sculptor Aristide Croisy only completed this one bronze in 1891.

The statue is in the heart of Alajuela in the park in front of the National Theatre. Actually, there is an interesting story behind the statue. This is not really a statue of Juan Santamaria. Many years ago a statue of Juan Santamaria was commissioned to be made in Europe and shipped to Puntarenas, Costa Rica. At the same time another statue was commissioned to be sent to Puntarenas in South America. Costa Rica received theirs and they received the statue of the barefoot, peasant boy that is Juan Santamaria. The cost to exchange the two statues was prohibitive so they each put them up and hoped that no one would ever know. They seem to have succeeded in this, as very few people really know the true story.
