It used to be that there were more museums or art galleries of this variety in Tianzifang, but now the area is overtaken by tourist trap curio stores amidst bars and small restaurants, quite a shame since Tianzifang is losing on its identity. One exception is this Ren Weiyin Art Gallery where one can come in free and enjoy the paintings and learn about the individual history of this artist up close and personal. Since there is nothing to sell here (not even prints and/or other reproductions) the 2 staff members are hands off and are around to answer questions. It appears that the place is financed by Ren's daughter (who now lives in NYC and travels to and fro) -- who only wants the public to learn about her father and his art and his history during the Cultural Revolution. The art was appealing to me since it appears he was attempting to take on the styles of European painters yet applying his own Chinese interpretation on the same. Very unique. Even having to fight the tourist crowd, the commercialism that has taken over the area, I would still make this stop to Tianzifang just to return to this gallery. Here is a Youtube entry on the artist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaZ-TpGX8m8 Check it out if only to take a break.…
