A place for architecture & photography buffs

I made the trip out to Jiading on a Sunday afternoon to check out the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre (SHPGT), which is located between two man-made waterways in Jiading district, 12 miles northwest of Shanghai's center.

It is a delightful place - good enough to fill 1-2 hours, if you stroll through the cavernous complex and it's surroundings.

Designed by reknowned Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, the theatre features a minimalist look, encased with glass and aluminium. There are five large openings carved through the building, creating a series of public spaces that are exposed to the open air, but sheltered from rain. True to Ando's style, SHPGT is characterised by the use of raw concrete, dramatic play of natural light, and forms that follow the landscape.

There is a large man-made waterway just beside the theater, with several pathways & bridges, for people to take a leisurely stroll along... Away from the crowds in downtown Shanghai.

This place is not a typical Shanghai attraction but a haven for architecture and photography buffs.

Beautiful theatre

Nicely designed architectural wonder by Tadao Ando very worth the visit even without attending a show. Went there for Carmina Burana performance of Harmony Shanghai. This is a intercultural dance project bringing students from different countries together on stage. Beautiful location, impressive performance.

A work in progress

A fabulous architectural wonder by Tadao Ando, this unique building is brand new and will take some time to develop an audience and some gravitas. It seems the first year of opening is a practice run for the theatre. Employees are still in training and vendors have yet to be hired for the food and drink outlets. Nevertheless, the season offers significant performances and tickets are plentiful until the venue proves itself. For architecture buffs, worth a visit just to see this unique building without crowds of people.
