The area
Neighborhood: Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.

i lived in SH in 2011 as an expat for my company and dragon fly was very close to my corp apartment at the time and i have been going back every year ever since as i was not aware of any spa set up per western standard in SH .. until this trip we just took during the last two weeks. for the first time i rented an apartment in SH (lovely place so much more comfy than even JW, our go to place for years) and it just happened to be next door to Zen on Fuxing rd. (we didn't go to the other location as the one on fuxing rd is really the main operation) in a nutshell, i would not need to go back to dragon fly ever again! 🤣 for less than half of the price, we got equally good and better sessions (my husband had a terrible massage at dragonfly this time) also, their therapists do not stand around, stare at you till you give them cash tip. we are thrilled to have "discovered" zen. also it's location is much better than dragonfly. the street is beautiful and quiet and very residential. you can hop over to boxing cat brewery next door after your msg! (mena and eva are the two we had ... i always get chinese accu-pressure, and my husband always get aroma therapy. both are simply great!)

I was looking for a clean place for a massage. I normally go down the street from my hotel for a foot massage, where it is inexpensive and OK. This was a treat to go to a Spa. The best part was that it was clean, quiet, and relaxing. I went for the 208 rmb before 6 pm. I was given a choice of male or female and asked for female. She was professional and experienced, and gave an excellent oil massage.

I tried a few massage places in Shanghai and Zen was by far the best of the bunch. It's got a relatively small entrance so you don't get the "I'm going to a palace spa" feel. The service is friendly and warm and the massage is wonderful. I've noticed a lot of massage places in China will give you the ancient Chinese hard as a lawn mower massage. This is where the masseuse try to make you feel as uncomfortable as humanly possible by forming their hands into sharp objects and then pressing down with all their might on your skin. Zen seems to be one of the few places in the orient that has moved past this line of thinking. Tis a star amongst moons.

I would not recommend this place for massage or anything remotely relaxing. I wish I had believed the negative reviews before I went. The lady on the front desk was friendly when I booked but when I went back later for the massage, she gave me a cup of tea and then the masseuse appeared and I was told to follow her and leave the tea so I had no time to have a drink before a ninety minute massage. There was no pre-massage consultation or discussion but I managed to explain that my neck was very tense. When I got changed, there was no robe to put on, only plastic knickers. This made me feel uncomfortable as I felt quite exposed when the masseuse returned.

The massage varied in quality throughout...at times it really hurt as she did not use out enough oil so my skin felt dragged and sore. Sometimes I could feel her nails digging into my neck which wasn’t pleasant. At other times the massage felt nice but there was constant noise from other rooms - chairs scraping on the floor, banging noises and loud voices - it was impossible to relax. When the masseuse asked me to turn over, there was no care or skill to keep me covered by folding the towel over me. When she did cover me, she sort of flung the towel over me and left parts of me exposed so I got cold. When I managed to explain I was cold, she scraped a cable across the floor and turned the heated mattress on so then I got really hot but decided not to say anything else.

For 338 RMB I did expect a sense of serenity and professionalism, but all this was lacking. When the receptionist asked how it had been, I told her and she laughed, saying that she could not control how people moved and spoke. I said that I had never been to such a noisy, unrelaxing spa and that other spas seem to manage to create a sense of quiet and tranquility. At no point did she apologise or ask for more information or offer a partial refund; in fact, her only concern as I left was that she was cold because the door was open! There are lots of spas in Shanghai...I don’t know which ones are worth trying, but I would strongly advise you to save your money and try a different one.

After review of the many hotel recommendations for massages I ended up going to Zen Massage. They had the more affordable packages, and had hours that were accommodating to my tour schedule during my visit.

First thing to note is that the entrance is a bit difficult to fins because the sign is in the gateway. The entrance is next to the tea store and entrance way is up the driveway.

Upon entry the front desk help was very professional and friendly. They explained each package and made recommendations based on pain points. My mom and I showed a bit early, but they got us in early so that we didn’t have to wait.

The massage was the best I ever had. They knew, without me saying anything, where I had pains. Read my body language to tell when the pressure was too light or too hard.

I would definitely be going again!

The body massage was nice (I got the sleepy feeling I get when I get a good one!), but the lower leg massage + reflexology could be better. I'll try a different combo next time

For those coming from the metro, it's a bit of a walk! be warned.....

Went for the weekday (before 6pm) special - 60 minute oil massage and 30 minute head/shoulder (or foot) massage.

Amazing deal and I had a very talented masseuse (Candy). I was snoozing very very quickly.

I have been to many massage places in Shanghai (including one down the street from this one), and for the cost, Zen Massage easily ranks among the best in Shanghai. Highly recommended. No issues whatsoever booking in english.

Went to new place near the main shop(approx. 5 min walk) located at 76 Fuxing place. Place is same size as the main shop ay 210 Wuding Road. However the spaces between massage bed are wider and the place is spanking new. They currently have a 30% discount for oil massages till 30 Sept. Do note that they do not offer the 208RMB 60min+30min package at new outlet.

I took the 90min massage and it cost 237RMB after discount. You get to choose from a selection of about 9 aroma oils including Lavender, Jasmine, etc.

Massage can be by a guy or girl masseuse. Excellet massage by this girl call SI SI. Young but powerful strokes at right spots.

You will be ask for your choice of package upon arrival. Changed to in house sandals while they keep your shoes. Led to room Change into a disposable underwear. The staff will knock on yr door prior re-entering the room.

When the massage is over, you will be cleaned with warm towels. There are shower facilities beside the rooms.

Prior exiting, tea is served, shoes returned and settles bill before leaving.

Reception staff speaks English. Very professional and good service. Clean place.

The price was the main factor for us visiting the Xikang Lu location. 168 RMB for a 90 minute treatment is great value in Shanghai! But 1 of the male masseurs we had was quite rude - two of the robes we were given to wear were broken and when we asked the male masseur for new ones he told us "it didn't matter" and was reluctant to get us new ones. When he finally did, he stormed off to get them and kept knocking on the door asking if we were ready when it had only been 5 seconds since he had handed us the new robes. The massage was a bit rough at times, the intensity of the massage was right but the way they went about it resulted in me with a headache at the end of it as they were pressing down so hard on my back that my head kept being forced into the head rest pretty hard. If i go again I will ask to try female masseurs.

The best massage I ever had. The masseur knows her job and adapts to the needs of the client even without asking. She paid special attention to my problem zones and gradually removed the tension and blocks in the body.
I felt light and relaxed after, it was a good choice.
