The area
Neighborhood: Jing'an
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have quiet cafes and independent boutiques.
How to get there
  • West Nanjing Road • 5 min walk

Old Synagogue now Ministry of Higher Education
Nov 2019
This old synagogue now serves as the Ministry of Higher Education. We has to ask permission to get onto the grounds and quickly take pictures and depart. There is one plaque on the outside of the grounds indicating the building was a former synagogue.

Memory of Jewish presence in Shanghai
Sep 2015 • Family
Shanghai became famous for Jewish mainly after WWII where it became a haven for lot of refugees. But Jewish were here much earlier and this building is a proof of their century presence here. Building is nicely preserved, with a description in Chinese and English but it is not open for public as it is used as conservatory.

Jewish Club (formerly) - Now Preserved as a Heritage Architecture
Oct 2014 • Solo
The well preserved building is impressive, as observed from the intricately patterned iron gate by the road side. The site is huge, as can be seen from the photos I am going to upload.

The Jewish Club building is a brick and concrete composite structure of Renaissance style. It was designed by Lafuente & Wootton Architects and built in 1911. It was restored by the Shanghai government and classified as a Heritage Architecture on 15/2/94.

Access to the site can be by taxi or Underground Mass Transit's Nanjing West Road station. It is quite close to the "Taobao Cheng" frequented by many tourists looking for cheap bargains.

Unfortunately, access into the site may not be easy as it appears to be used as office by a commercial enterprise.
