About
The opening of Bar Rouge in 2004 atop Bund 18 announced a new era in Shanghai nightlife. Rapidly becoming the city’s go-to venue offering a unique combination of high style and unbeatable Shanghai skyline views from its rooftop terrace – Sexy crowds, international DJs, fantastic theme parties, and unique Champagne celebration rituals, contribute to its amazing ambiance night after night, becoming an icon of Shanghai’s glamorous nightlife. The club has hosted awe-inspiring performances from top DJs such as: David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Dennis Ferrer and Claptone, to name just a few. The latest renovation at the beginning of 2019 provides an evolved experience upon setting foot on to its new star-dazzled long entrance runway; a rectangular island bar centerpiece takes pride of place within the interior space, with the introduction of unrivalled interplay between club lights, sound system, 10 LED screens and a sweeping dance floor.

Any one knows a promoter in Bar Rouge that can share a free entrance code? I want to bring my friend, but only ladies can enjoy free entrance on Thursday. Thanks a lot

The bartenders were great (their manhattans were awesome) and for a very crowded night, they were attentive to the customers.

Bar Rouge is probably the most overhyped bar in Shanghai and you can tell by the excessive amount of foreigners in the club! It was just a weird vibe. Definitely has an amusing crowd if you like to people watch: a good amount of old Caucasian men with their very much noticeably younger Asian dates in their finest bling, large groups of visibly drunk obnoxious tourists acting like it was their last night on the planet, and the music ... wow, it was all over the place and not a good mix either. Maybe I'm spoiled with the bar scene in San Francisco because this place is just too much. And it was a Thursday night!

Mao would turn in his grave but for anyone back home in England wanting to see how China has changed they need to come here and look out across the wangpu river from this amazing venue above the Bund and watch scantily dressed dancers on tables surrounded by all the beautiful people from East and West. It's all slightly mad.

Went for an event called "Uncorked and Blended," which was some local food vendors and alcohol vendors. They charged me 400 CNY for my girlfriend and I to enter (including drink tokens). Outside, a staff told us we can sit inside at any table until 9PM, at which time reservation parties were expected. So, my girlfriend and I purchased a sushi roll and a wagyu beef dumpling dish. Inside, a different staff member told us we were not allowed to sit anywhere to eat. He suggested we could stand at the bar and eat our meal. After my girlfriend got upset, a lady, possibly the event coordinator, finally allowed us to sit. She was quite accommodating.

What kind of food "festival" doesn't allow you to sit down to eat off your plates? The venue was around 3/4 empty. After eating, I gave my remaining drink tokens away and left. I paid over 600 CNY for a beer, a small sushi roll, 3 dumplings, a glass of wine and some very poor customer service. Needless to say, I won't be returning to Bar Rouge any time soon, and will try to get future meetups moved away from the venue. The music was good, the view is amazing, the staff was horrible (other than the hostess and the man outside), the food was basically delivery quality, with restaurant prices and no seating without an argument. Possibly a one-off event snafu, but why bother risking it?

Not worth the entrance price we paid, as we were charged 150 RMB/person that includes a (not anymore) free drink.

The view is indeed amazing, but there is a minimum amount per table to pay after 9pm, if you want to sit. We enjoyed the drink but didn't feel like we wanted to stay longer than 20 minutes.

Definitely not worth what we paid as the Bund walk offers nearly the same views.

I had a very troubling experience at Bar Rouge earlier this week.

I arrived there with one of my colleagues on a rainy Tuesday night at 6:30pm. We were both dressed in business suits and looking for a place to have a drink before dinner. Even though we were the only customers in the bar at the time, all of the best tables (including all of the ones by the windows) had reserved signs on them. We asked one of the waiters whether we could sit at one of the reserved tables for a quick drink, promising that we would leave within the hour as we had a dinner reservation at Sens & Bund downstairs. We were told that we could not do so unless we spent a minimum of RMB1,000. Thinking that this was incredibly obnoxious but not wanting to cause a scene, we decided to sit at one of the tables at the back of the bar (remember, we were the only customers there at the time). I should note at this point that my colleague and I are both American born Chinese women and we were speaking a combination of Mandarin and English.

Shortly after our drinks arrived, two Caucasian men walked in wearing jeans, sweat shirts and sneakers. They sat down at one of the reserved tables (the same ones that we were turned away from minutes earlier) without any apparent comment from the wait staff. One man ordered a martini and the other ordered a beer. They did not order anything else and it seems unlikely that their bill would have been anywhere RMB1000.

In this day and age, such behaviour troubles me a great deal. I do not plan to return to Bar Rouge again and I would encourage others to do the same.

Bar Rouge is not my favorite place, not even for private events. I always have a Bar Rouge Nightmare. I normally don't like to go there. But once in a blue moon, when friends are going to Bar Rouge, I like to join them but never came back with a positive experience. It's always negative. I have no idea, why this bar is so popular?

Yes, the location is one of the best on the Bund. No doubt, the open rooftop bar is beautiful. But the overall environment is not. Last night, we went to Bar Rouge with few new friends from Shanghai Edition. It was past midnight, not very crowded. Everything was ok, except one of our friend from Mexico had a bill trouble with one of the Bartender. We felt the Bartender was unprofessional and disrespectful. Later, one of the manager solved the problem. We left after 2am. Everybody was starving. We tried three four McDonalds nearby. But they are all closed.
It was full moon. But what a night!

A Bar Rouge Night always Full of Nightmares.
There are much better place in Shanghai. Don't Go to Bar Rouge.

I went there with a friend in August 2011. The staff was rude and unwelcoming. Although the place was almost empty we were asked to sit in the back far from the view which is the only good thing about this place. The place was filled with foreign businessmen with chinese escorts.

We left and went to "New Heights" which offers better service and is less pretentious. And they don't put you far from the view.

Bar rouge appeared to me like a place for expats looking to spend tons of money in the company of paid ladies. I recommend to avoid it, there are far better and impressive place to enjoy shanghai at night.

I'm always amazed that Bar Rouge is still around. As a long time resident of Shanghai (12 years and counting), 10 years ago, this was one of the places where you brought your out-of-town guests and wow them with all the bling and the view, and the lights, and the terrace. This is where you showed "ah see, China isn't what you thought, right?".

That was so 10 years ago.

And even back then, the same issues that plagued the place are still in full force: loud and awful sound, ludicrously priced mediocre drinks, an insufferably bling-bling obsessed, show-offy clientele.

Sure, there's a great view, but more than a decade later, there's PLENTY other bars around that have that great view, and do everything else better. If you want cheaper drinks with the same view: Captain's Bar. If you want other similar, but less crass places in the same area, The EDITION, VUE Bar, The Park Hyatt SWFC, Long Bar, to name but a few, are all superior.

On 21/04/18 a group of us mixed nationalities went there on a weekend night. The bartender a young Chinese male with specs, was intentionally ignoring my order even though I was in the front and taking orders from people behind me. When my German friend joined me, he takes the order of my friend ignoring my order AGAIN! Stood there for at least 15-20 minutes. My friend gestured to take my order, so any drink I order from the menu he would say is not available. Finally I gave up and I'll have the same as my friend and he gave a stare and made a "WTF reaction". It was unnecessary and downright rude! But I was being a lady and suppressed it. We both made the paid in cash. The guy gives the change to my friend and held on to mine and ignoring that I was still standing he took two more orders from people behind me and prepares the drink. I was about to leave the bar but my German friend insisted on the change. The guy literally threw the money towards me, swears something and makes a sign to get out from there. Disrespectful and uncouth behaviour. I wonder if he ever got an education in life!

Indeed it is a great bar with energetic crowd and great music and ambience but if you don't know how to treat your customers your establishment is as horrid as one can imagine. It is baffling to see such a behaviour in an upscale bar! Just AWFUL! I understand you receive a lot of European expats but it is also an international...Do you even train your staff???
